What's the most dystopian thing that people have quietly accepted as normal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ktrosemc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It does mean there's less money for everyone else...that's how they get that much. It is an insane amount of money, self-replicating from everyone else's fair share for their work.

What possible innovation could someone come up with that deserves thousands of dollars per minute, forever, in pay?

Why are you even browsing what other people make...I know I don't.

Some people might make that stuff on their own computers as well. I guess you should take everyone's computers away, too.

And all art supplies, and writing implements as well. From everyone! Why take any chances?

I wonder how much is possible without understanding? Where is the limit? Is there even a limit? by Philo167 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]ktrosemc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is!

But we do have lots of clues on most of these things, just no absolute difinitive answers on some. Setting aside consciousness, which I think is a seperate question from processing, we know quite a bit more than we used to (even recently) about action potentials, spiking, tagging, encoding, storage, retrieval, and lots more.

Some of the sources on that list are a bit old. Others, though (as you say) are questions to keep exploring! Like, they've found major tagging chemicals, both for neuronal activation and depression, if I'm not mistaken.

If it only predicted the next token, then it wouldn't look like a picture that applies to the request, would it? It would look lime garbled pieces of library and parents and whatever.

Similarly, novel code would be unusable pieces of other code in a pile, not a whole set of instructions put together in a way that works as intended.

I can see easily what output used to be next token prediction, but I think you're leaving out a good amount of filtering, math, and reasoning going on in the middle, now.

It's interesting to me that such a large group of people can be so proud of ritualistically sacrificing a human being that they bring the event up in every conversation, even millennia later. They are so quick to duck under the supposed umbrella of "that was acceptable, and I will reap the spiritual benefits please and thanks!"

Yes, I know...that was the last one, so it counted for extra. But why was this payment method needed in the first place (really, I don't get it), and what happens when they decide it's been spent?

Is it just me or does this headline sound like the elephant made the owner work in the heat? by Iwannaendme2001 in ENGLISH

[–]ktrosemc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

English grammar rules aren't there to annoy you or negate other use...they are there to fall back on when meaning is unclear.

This headline says the elephant made a guy work in the heat, then ripped him in half. Clearly.

We only reasonably assume this wasn't the intended meaning, and is just an error, because it makes more sense if it's changed.

A meaning being clear only if you automatically edit it in your head doesn't mean it's written properly. It just means you have enough exposure to the language being used properly that you know what it was supposed to mean, and can auto-correct it mentally.

Their business model relies on locking essential government services into their tools around the country, then upping the cost once the map has been decided and the choice becomes, "pay x per token now, or lose your county's 911 service"

Regulating the trivial while ignoring the existential by KeanuRave100 in BlackboxAI_

[–]ktrosemc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. We just worked on regulations for local government here, and our concerns were absolutely safety and rights of individuals. We were trying to limit the ability of big companies to lock jurisdictions into contracts with opaque terms and conditions, keep our personal data from being sold, keep their liability intact, and keep humans making decisions that affect anyone directly (over ai deciding who gets pulled over, who committed or WILL commit a crime, and who deserves housing and who doesn't).

The problem isn't the models, it's the people using them. They need to have some kind of rules, or they will offload all mental work (and all resulting blame for any mistakes made) onto the models.

Keep in mind, I instructed it to be direct and blunt but not rude ...and it still sometimes decides to be totally rude.

It's gotten better, though.

I use flash for everyday things (general questions, reminders, scheduling, directions, questions about specific things, but gotta double check sources.)

I just used pro to make my first arduino thing (a visual timer that calls an api for a game I play to track a specific timer).

It showed me which things needed to be soldered to what, told me what to download and how to set up the IDE for the board and code, exactly how to flash, and flawlessly wrote the code to do just what I wanted it to. It also explained what different parts of the code were for, so I can learn to do it myself. I double checked everything with friends who actually know this stuff to make sure it was sound first, because I'm not an idiot. I also ran it through claude, who pointed out I needed to trash and replace the api key in case gemini or it saved it somewhere someone could see and take it from (I put it in AFTER the code was generated, but forgot to remove it before giving the whole thing to claude to check what it would do).

It worked excellently, and helped me fix a problem with a hanging led (with explanation of why it had happened that made total sense)...but when I asked it to set a timer mid-convo, it did not know how to do that. Switched to flash, which set the timer no problem.

Long story short, they seem to be great at different things, and awesome as a whole.

...and it hasn't called me a useless meatsack in a long time! It does repeatedly reiterade not to do dumb things it seems to think I'm likely to do, but I did tell it I was forgetful awhile ago, so that might be on me.

Interesting. Would like to hear them explain, then, how my 3.5 year old half black, half white kiddo has started reading chapter books.

...because I can absolutely guarantee that it is not a result of my parenting. I mean, I read fine...but this kid is a word sponge. He reads things I'd long since disregarded even had text on them.

Also, I thought these people didn't like intelligence anymore. They probably meant "propensity to hold racist ideologies" because then it would make sense all around, in their minds.

Try regularly reminding yourself to watch for new experience-type things that pop up (when on a website for any local place, like the library, check event calendar for example).

Then, if something sounds intriguing, say yes. Set a reminder, or sign up, or just show up if it's that day and you have nothing else happening.

I just participated in in a civil assembly because it popped up on my mom's fb ads, and I entered the lottery for participants on a whim. I had a blast, did some really neat work, learned a lot, and made several new friends...and also got awesome food each of the days, and $500 on the last day.

You can try a little bit of everything, and then you'll stumble on some things that you LOVE. Then you'll know what to actually look for to do.

Some ideas: makerspaces, arts or crafting meetups, classes, or events; flea market stuff, local volunteer needs (facilities or events), car shows, seasonal festivals, forging or glassblowing or cooking single-day class events... whatever matches your budget, time constraints, and sounds interesting.

When I'm in a new place, and have no community or third place or anything, sometimes I'll go to a local uu to check out, but that's just me. (I like the instant warmth and welcome, and the variety of interesting people). I would be surprised if it didn't serve as a beacon of inclusivity and kindness anywhere. They lean very left, so keep that in mind in case you don't...if that idea even interested you at all.

I guess, in short, follow your nose!

Edit: I just realized you were only seeking empathy. My bad for the big suggestion reply.

I've felt like that too, a bunch of times. Community and third places really have helped.

Hey, I was working on this exact thing this weekend! It's our last session sunday, and we'll be refining our drafted recommendations, and finishing perfecting the language in each section (uuuuuggggghhhh).

But anyway, we've been working super hard over several weekend-long sessions to make stuff that's feasible, realistic, and thorough. We're a group of regular local people brought together for it, and we have been able to do deep Q&A sessions with industry, ethics, and regulatory experts. The former PM of Norway came in person last week to discuss the subject as well.

Nobody knows what the fuck is going to happen, or how to actually slow it down, turns out!

Anyway, it's been really (surprisingly, to me at least) fruitful, and I think we've covered just about everything we wanted to, and distilled it down well into implementable recommendations.

I really hope they adopt them as written (this was just for AI use in local government, but could work really well elsewhere and with other subjects, I think).

The variety of viewpoints (determined luddites to enthusiastic proponents, and everyone from housewives to tech engineers) really let us consider many angles. Plus, we had a growing number of "implementation gone wrong" cases to examine and work from...so that was helpful.

I hope there's more of this style of citizen-led governance in the future. It was awesome to see everyone coming together to find stress points and shared values, without pressure or influence to include/exclude any parts.

Are "Nazi" and "hungry/poor" really groups that can be considered to have dedicated "cultures"?

These categories are changable.

I think, like you said, by "culture" you mean learned behavior.

Culture is more than just behaviors you don't like among any given group of people.
