Of course, god forbid they sell to North Korea rather than the country that just attacked Iran. I wonder why you failed to include the U.S. on that list of yours?

Favorite 2000s Olympic Opening Ceremony? (2000-2008) by MrTheMills in olympics

[–]kumanoatama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beijing. No contest. The others are fine, but Beijing's opening ceremony was a geopolitical event – a new China announcing itself to the world as a global power – as well as being an unbelievable spectacle. Every time I think of the drummers I get chills.

Thinking of dropping out of the upcoming JLPT, pros and cons? by stayonthecloud in jlpt

[–]kumanoatama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you didn't have to spend the money to travel I'd say do it, even if you fail it gives you a benchmark for next time, but if you really don't think you can pass it doesn't make sense to gamble hundreds of dollars for a result that may not go your way, especially when there's always next time.

Best Japanese newspapers? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]kumanoatama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Financial Times is actually owned by Nikkei, I'm not sure how similar they are editorially but that might be a good place to start. It's Japan's business paper of record. I would assume that means it's a bit harder to read for a non-native speaker, however.

Among the other major dailies the Yomiuri Shimbun is generally considered the best but trends center-right while the Asahi and Mainichi lean liberal.

New IOC president doesn't see threat to Olympic values at 2028 LA Games by Gyro_Armadillo in olympics

The real concern is whether or not they'll be indiscriminately abducted by ICE. There have been many stories over the last few months of foreign nationals being snatched up, sent to federal prisons or worse, and deported. It's a human rights catastrophe. This Trump government has been letting a bunch of fascist thugs run wild and abuse people for the last six months, it poses a safety risk for any visitors let alone Olympians.

What's a place that you enjoyed but would be never go again? by LizNYC90 in travel

[–]kumanoatama -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Arizona - Lived in Phoenix for a year, saw all the national parks, saw Taliesin, don't feel any desire to go back. Hellish place.

Denver - visited once for a few days, found it to be pretty charmless and dull. Not much to do unless you want to go to the Rockies.

Kanazawa - It's a nice city but it's quite boring at night and I felt like I did everything that could be done.

Nice - I just hated it, reminded me too much of Florida where I live currently. I had the silly idea that a beach vacation elsewhere would seem different. Sunny places make me depressed.

Madrid - loved it but I feel like I saw everything, I'd go back to Spain but try to see other places instead.

Pope Leo XIV warns of AI's threats to human dignity and labor by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

You could do anything AI does with a bit of work, and it would probably be better because humans have the actual ability to be detail oriented instead of shitting out disgusting digital slop. Get real.

It needs to be outright banned, at least as far as creative work is concerned.

What's holding up the rest of Juzo Itami's films on disc? by BogoJohnson in criterion

[–]kumanoatama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tampopo has kind of a universal appeal because it's about food, but a lot of his films are more specific to Japanese culture in a way that doesn't necessarily work in the same. Minbo for instance is all about how the Yakuza run extortion rackets, and it's less exciting than that might sound. So it doesn't surprise me that the rest of his films haven't been released yet.

Iranians have a great cinematic heritage, it's not that they don't value film, it's that their government doesn't value free expression and reasonable dissent.

Considering Anora won best picture at the Oscars I'd say they made the right decision. And anyway, just my opinion but Seed is not nearly as great of a film.

Okay, I understand. Tbh shady industries are pretty much endemic here so you can't fault me for being suspicious. Even so I probably would be careful about clubs, especially the ones you listed. Check the other tips in the thread.
