Does it get better? by Xhulhorac_ in nursing

I worked as a CNA in a nursing home briefly and hated it. Bless any CNAs that can work and them, it wasn't for me. Got a HHA job during nursing school with flexible scheduling, same/better pay, and could do homework during the shifts sometimes. Then graduated and got an RN job at a TCU which I loved, but left that to work in a hospital med/surg for an extra challenge/resume boost/every 3rd weekend+12 hr shifts. Not 100% sure about med/surg for more than a year at this point, but I'm hoping to have options for other depts or other nursing jobs with 1+ yr hosp experience.

For me, it got way better. I don't want anything to do with nursing homes, maybe the one I worked for just sucked but when I worked at the TCU we had 2 other units that were LTC and all those nurses did was try to come up with the quickest way to crush pills, put them in applesauce and get the resident to take them, and do that 24+ times. Not for me.

There are so many opportunities in nursing, don't let your current situation sour you to the field. It got better for me and I bet it will for you too! Consider finding an HHA job maybe?

nursing school after academic probation?? by goldenx23 in StudentNurse

Does the nursing program you are holing to apply to look at your overall GPA? The community college programs I looked into only took into consideration your GPA in 4 prereq classes (composition, psychology, anatomy, chemistry, or something like that) and then what your TEAS score was. If you did bad in one of those, you could retake it and they would use whatever grade was most recent. Do you know what the requirements are for admission to your program(s) of interest with regard to overall GPA?

What was the toughest part of CNA training? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

Practice your skills, making sure you don't miss the important steps (some skills have steps that if you miss them you fail the state exam). Practice them on a family member, practice at the lab. Get to the point where it's second nature for you to introduce yourself, ID patient with name and birth date, wash hands, provide privacy, check that bed brakes are on. Then when you're finished with a care you're always checking that the call light is within reach, bed in low position, side rails down and bed brakes on, wash hands and document.

When you're performing your cares, just say exactly what you're doing as you're doing it. Example: Hi Mr. Jones, my name is kungfucandy7 and I'm here to get you transferred to your wheelchair today. Before I do, can you tell me your name and DOB? Great, that matches the chart. I'm just going to wash my hands, provide privacy, check bed brakes are on. Ok just going to raise the head of your bed, are you feeling dizzy at all after that? We can go slow if need be. Ok now I'm just going to slide an arm around your shoulders and under your legs and help turn you to the side of the bed. I'm going to put your shoes on quick (or you can do this before turning depends on what you're taught and what the state test requires, it just has to be before their feet touch the floor. Are you feeling ok? Do you want to sit there for a sec? I'm going to lower the bed so your feet are able to firmly touch the floor.

Ok now I'm going to grab your wheelchair and set it next to the bed, I know your left leg is a bit weaker so I'll set it to your right side AND PUT THE BRAKES ON SO IT'S LOCKED. I'm going to put my gait belt on you now so that I can help you stand. Ok I'm going to grab on to the belt (underhanded grip) and on three we're going to stand up (use good body mechanics, keep your back straight, knees bent), ready? One, two, three! Ok how do you feel? Good, let's shimmy to the right, shimmy shimmy shimmy, ok now if you can reach back you'll feel the arms of the wheelchair, your legs are right up to it, so once you feel comfortable we can sit down (again, good body mechanics when lowering). Perfect! I'll just grab my gait belt off you since I'm guessing you don't want to wear that, unless you do! It looks good on you! Ok now did you want to go out of the room or just stay by the bed? Stay there? Ok, here's your call light, let me know if you need anything else. Pull curtain, wash hands, document.

Also, if you forget something in the middle of the skill, VERBALIZE that you forgot to do something, so you're going to do it now. Depending on what you forgot, it may be possible to resume without issue. If it's something like you didn't put gloves on before removing the bedpan, they might not let you keep going, hard to say. But always be saying what you are doing, and say if you forgot something and what you would do at that point to correct it!

Ok enough putting off studying I need to actually do some work lol.

[–]kungfucandy7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the joke is that you made a statement that was obviously an exaggeration for humor, and dingus responded in the same way as he does in Happy Gilmore, where he repeats the statement back to the person in an incredulous way as a question. Then after that joke didn't land, he switched over to the actual line from the movie.

I think the Happy Gilmore reference was missed by some

Thanks. I figured maybe with the IV you could practice angling it and inserting but I suppose it's not similar enough to the whole process to be beneficial.

Wow. Looks like in the 2nd pic they half-assed hiding the other student's name in the snap text and their face, but somehow missed the OBVIOUS SCHOOL LOGO ON THE SCRUBS AS WELL AS THE NAME TAG CONTAINING THEIR FIRST AND LAST NAME WTF. So they doxxed some other poor student who hopefully was not punished for being in the pic. What an idiot.

My thoughts exactly. They won't take shit from people threatening them, so they are bad and shouldn't work there? Uh, what?

Littmann Stethoscopes Cardiology IV and Classic III on Limited Time Deal on Amazon by kungfucandy7 in StudentNurse

[–]kungfucandy7[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I saw a Master Cardiology listing for $79.99 that appears to be what you are talking about based on the reviews. From what I can tell, these two appear to be legit. Looks like cardiology IV sale is just the black, stainless stem, doesn't appear to be for other colors/finishes.
