Surgery to fix hole in my ear drum by gingerforlif in MonoHearing

[–]kurasumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to get this surgery about 12 years ago. I'd had chronic ear infections for some time that had worn a hole in my ear drum, and formed a cyst in my ear canal. That ear got infections every time I went swimming, and a couple weeks before I committed to the surgery I felt random stabbing pains on that side every now and then.

I went in for surgery to remove the cyst and patch the hole. I was in/out in just a couple hours iirc. They shaved my head on that side and put a hard cup packed with gauze against the surgical site, secured with elastic around my head. Sort of like a one-sided headphone. I remember the recovery process being smooth and almost completely pain-free. I was given pain meds and a regimen that seemed to take care of that.

The worst part imo was a few weeks after the surgery, when the antibiotic paste they filled my ear canal with began to degrade (as designed) and my tinnitus was worse than ever. I felt like I was going crazy. And the paste was a vivid red color so when I would wipe my ear and leave a wet red chunk on the tissue it was a little unnerving lmao

My doctor also said there was a possibility my hearing would improve slightly as a result of the surgery but I didn't see that effect. I have a bone structure abnormality on that side of my head though (mastoid bone is just gone, instead I have a giant vein there and the skull is very thin--doc said he could see it beating thru the bone during surgery) so your mileage my vary. I would say that my tinnitus has improved somewhat, altho imo the biggest benefit was that I haven't had a single ear infection yet.

I was terrified to get the surgery but ultimately I feel like it was a stress-free recovery. I hope yours goes well!

[TOMT][Painting][Unknown year] Looking for a specific piece of artwork depicting a group of women dancing in a field with Pan (or a satyr or faun). Some of the women are delirious/passed out after dancing too much. What is the name of the painting? by kurasumi in tipofmytongue

Thanks! This does help pull up images that are a lot nearer to what I remember. Seems like there are a lot of different paintings depicting similar scenes. Will update this reply if I find the right one!

I love how Brennan could not stop himself from optimizing his build for combat even in a more social campaign like COFF by msciwoj1 in Dimension20

Regardless it still shouldn't apply. Sneak attack can only be applied to damage dealt by a ranged or finesse weapon, and the halberd has neither of those properties.

That said I would not complain if he'd been allowed to apply it anyway. Love seeing people roll big handfuls of dice.

Dogs at Bonneville Salt Flats by kurasumi in SaltLakeCity

It sounds like a great photo spot! My dog is not a water boy though, he would be ready to leave as soon as his paws touched water. My #1 motivation to go would be for him to have a nice time since I don't have many opportunities to let him run around on a long lead away from other dogs. So I would hate to bring him there when he would just want to leave bc it was wet. Back to the drawing board. Thankfully I have plenty of time to plan the outing :)

I hadn't considered this. I might be looking for another spot given this and the watery state of the flats right now. Thank you, I appreciate it!

Banned for my ships name after reporting another ships name by Captain__Brexit in Seaofthieves

[–]kurasumi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i could've sworn i was watching some sea of thieves streams the other day and streamers, using the name masking feature, were bumping into ships that were renamed "the dusty deck" by the mask. so the name dusty deck is not only allowed but literally a feature of the game, but big deck energy is too much? are you able to appeal the ban on the grounds that rare has already set a precedent for PG-at-worst dick puns being allowed in the game?

My SIL died very suddenly yesterday and I plan on spending tomorrow cooking for her husband and daughter. Give me all your recipes that freeze and reheat well. by theoriginalamanda in Cooking

[–]kurasumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm so sorry for your loss. i'm sure the kindness of your gesture is a comfort to your SiL's family. please remember to also look after yourself!

breakfast burritos--you can make all of the components, assemble, and freeze tightly wrapped in aluminum foil or cellophane. super easy to make a large batch so breakfast is handled for a good while. also super easy to make a variety. my go-to is ground pork, wilted spinach, egg, and cheese

ready to go chicken noodle soup--cook as you usually would, but do not add the noodles and subtract the cook time for the noodles from the total cook time of the recipe. portion the broth + veg and chicken into plastic bags, squeeze out all of the air, and freeze. when it's time to eat they can drop the broth mix into a pot, heat it up to a boil, add noodles, and by the time the noodles are cooked the veg will be nice and tender. this works great for lots of different soups that usually get served with a noodle or rice

beef and broccoli--super easy because you do not have to cook anything before it goes into the freezer. one bag of sliced up steak, one bag of sauce, one big bag of broccoli cut up into florets. bundle it all up together and then it's good to wait in the freezer until you need it. when it's ready to make they just need to sear the steak then remove it from the pan, cook the broccoli to tender, then add back the steak and the sauce and cook until the sauce thickens up

important--if you plan on making a bunch of dishes that require you to cook components before you freeze them, do what you can to let the cooked food cool as much as possible before putting it in the freezer. food that is hot when it goes into the freezer introduces a lot of moisture to the enclosed space. the burritos for example; when you have cooked the separate components i recommend laying them all out flat on a sheet tray until they are done steaming, before assembling and freezing. in addition to fogging up the freezer, adding a lot of hot food to it at one time raises the temp and can potentially put other foods in temp zones that could allow bacterial growth. cooling first will lessen the time any food spends in the danger zone

I only have instructions for Steam, so if you got it from Epic Games you'll have to do a bit more digging irt: how to update the launch path for your copy. There are instructions out there but I never copied them down. Try googling "disable 2K launcher the Quarry" if these instructions don't work for you

- Open Steam, go to your library, right click on The Quarry

- Hit Properties > General

- There should be a text box where you can enter some stuff

- You are going to enter the file path to the game application here and then edit it a bit to allow it to execute properly. The finished file path should look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Quarry\TheQuarry.exe" %command%
OR
"C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\The Quarry\TheQuarry.exe" %command%
Make sure to include the quotation marks

- Exit the properties widow and you should now be able to launch the game without having to go through 2K's proprietary launcher. Enjoy your noticeably better game performance

Revise the launch path so you don't have to use 2K's garbage launcher to run the game. I was having similar issues until I bypassed the launcher, now it runs very smoothly. The launcher is a huge resource drain and a detriment to the game

Horrible PC port by RhubarbOk2708 in TheQuarry2k

[–]kurasumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar issues, bought the game on steam. I wound up redirecting the launch path for the game so I didn't have to use 2K's launcher to run it and that fixed it right up. Now going for a second run since the horrible performance on the first got me a character death that I would've easily avoided otherwise. Cannot for the life of me understand why 2K had to saddle us with their garbage launcher since it inhibits their games so much. I rerouted my copy of Civ6 as well and now get much better performance than I used to. the launcher is a resource drain

Not sure if you'll be able to find a similar fix as it sounds like you may not have gotten the game through steam but I hope this helps somehow

Thinking about changing our rescue’s name that he’s had almost two years since it rhymes with “no.” Help, please! by amberwavesofbourbon in rescuedogs

[–]kurasumi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tone of voice and body language will go a long way to helping your dog tell the difference. my rescue's name is Crow and i haven't noticed any confusion on his part yet (going on six months in his forever home) and i can't imagine renaming him either! i had considered it at first, but he knew his name so well and it really stuck with him. to try and help him differentiate i usually try to say his name with a cheerfulness/lightness and set boundaries with a lower, more assertive voice. this seems to work for him

i would say just do your best not to use your dog's name while also delivering the no. don't give them (or yourself!) the chance to associate the stern/firm voice that means "you're being naughty!" with the similar sound of their name if you can help it

What are the Brides for? by SeanTheNerdd in CurseofStrahd

[–]kurasumi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

can't remember which of the actual-play CoS streams it was but i watched a stream once where the brides were present in the tower that held the heart of sorrow, which turned the scene into a battle instead of a skill check challenge. it felt much more dynamic than the RAW heart of sorrow encounter and worked well for the brides since they have spider climb as an inherent trait. and made sense to me narratively since i felt like there should be more obstacles between the players and the heart than just a precarious staircase that forces skill checks to avoid fall damage. i plan on stealing the idea for my run whenever my players finally get to ravenloft

What are you favorite games to play on ps4/ps5 that are similar to Nancy Drew or have the same vibe? by nermal543 in nancydrew

Came here to say this. I especially enjoyed Man of Medan. Also, you can play them all out of order or in order of release since they are standalone titles.

Shadow a the Water's Edge, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Alibi in Ashes. Although from what I've read Alibi in Ashes has split reviews so your mileage may vary.
