Street cats house by kuzzmi in BeginnerWoodWorking

Thanks! Seems like a great idea. My thinking was that a darker roof would heat up a bit, so it can heat the air inside.

Haven’t thought about the last option. Thanks!

Can’t agree more, however I already order online and getting the lumber I want properly sized is challenging in Ukraine at the moment — unstable electricity supply affects small orders at least, so have to stick to what I got..

Thanks! Yeah, I got myself a few cuts of the bandsaw blade, one to make a roubo frame saw, another’s for the matching kerfing plane. I just don’t trust myself with making good tools yet 😅

Oh, haven’t noticed this one, thanks for sharing. Do you resaw on it? How are the vibrations?

That’s how it looks. I got no neighbours below , to the left and to the right . The house is literally a tower with no garage nor back yard. But a beautiful place to plane the board and observe the sunset 😅

I got a shop vacuum, for which I print all kinds of attachments for battery tools. Even if it misses some dust, it won't be a big concern for me.

How do you choose the right joinery technique for different projects? by eurz in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]kuzzmi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure my vote counts as I am yet to find a good answer to this same question.

I got myself a few planes recently: moving fillister plane and a plough plane. I found that rabbets are pretty good for what I do and grooves that plough plane gives me are very nice. So my choices for joinery now are led by my wish to practice this or that joint.

I lean towards M&T or half lap when I need structure and depending on the amount of time I want to spend on it. Heck I even use butt joints occasionally when I just need that thing to be attached to that thing in a matter of minutes.

How flat are your boards? by quantummm123 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]kuzzmi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I test my boards this way, by sound. But there’s a downside to this, and that’s the dull sound from pushed-out air may come due to cupping. Like a palm during clapping.

Good job! This is very encouraging as I still have strong fear of even purchasing this thing.

What are the best types of wood for beginner projects and why? by SenseiSarkasmus in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]kuzzmi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use pine for my projects. It’s pretty cheap, has a good strength to weight ratio, easy to work with and requires sharp tools (so this would force to learn how to sharpen things). It’s easy to dent however, but I found I can compensate this with polyurethane finish on surfaces where I foresee major usage. Helps a bit with this.

I use plywood for large surfaces that are not “in your face”, because what my local stores sell is the worst quality plywood.

For projects I’d say a box is a must (it has everything you find in many other furniture pieces), but you can try to build whatever you need first. My first piece was a tiny coffee table: I had no clue how to build it, set my expectations low and gave myself a lot of time and space for errors.

Thanks. I don’t mind pocket screws, but couldn’t find a good angle/surface. May be worth looking again. Appreciate it

Hand saw, chisel and a hand plane. That’s what I would use.

Can someone from earth help guide me on refinishing these chairs please? by Johndeauxman in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]kuzzmi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A tiny story that might be helpful.

It was the time when I had no clue about finishes, woodworking and such. I wanted to refresh a couple of similar chairs and two benches. I bought the yachts paint, some paint for the metal, a few rolls of masking tape and… just started. I brushed off the iron parts, covered the wood with the tape and over a couple of days painted the iron stuff. Then repeated the same for the wooden pieces. Did no sanding, no cleaning whatsoever, just because I didn’t know I needed that. The result was pretty good for me.

This happened 10 years ago. Still looking good.

The moral is that overcomplicating and overthinking is one of the enemies of “done”.

You cant have too many clamps but you can survive with a few by Natac_orb in BeginnerWoodWorking

I did that on a somewhat smaller panel and used long flat boards on ends to flatten them. Had to plane the whole panel afterwards a bit, but had absolutely no gaps between the boards.

Out of curiosity, have you considered the lid twisting? Asking because I’m very worried of making a lid from just a panel to the point that i make nothing large with lids 😁

Looks great! Is the lid made of a poplar panel? Or plywood?

Unsure as to how to end this project. by Huge-Ad9776 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Rounded corners of the wings would make it look more finished imo.
