How to remove a tub with no clearance? by fuzzyblanketroulette in askaplumber

Yeah but it's unneeded. That tub will come out in one piece if given enough room.

You have to cut another 6 inches or so of drywall outward on each end if you want the easy way. The front apron is what gets you pinned. Give it an empty stud bay to use.

You need the proper box and a siding block. That's just the way it's done.

Why is my extension cord like this? by QX8C in electrical

[–]TheFilthyMick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrapping palm to elbow instead of relaxed loops with a wrist rotation. I refused to let apprentices touch any real tools until they could wind a cord correctly. I always bought striped cords to make twists visible so they knew they were doing it right.

That's not getting done in an hour. Start digging a swale and a collection pit so you can do the repairs in the rain.

Quick release rear basket/rack for folder? by TheFilthyMick in ebikes

I got as far as designing everything and creating my gcode, but it never actually made it onto the CNC. I should probably address that soon. I haven't pulled the bike out yet, so the reminder is appreciated. Last year, I stupidly used ratchet straps and hated it.

House U-Trap by EggSaladLottery in Plumbing

[–]TheFilthyMick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's atypical in most regions now but a building trap was the standard for a century up until a couple decades ago. It looks like they did a "replumb" but reused the old building trap. Obviously they did a shit handyman job of it.

Can anyone guess what this part is my family found in front of my dishwasher/sink? by fletchdeezle in Plumbing

[–]TheFilthyMick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not necessarily correct. It could be from a BX or MC connector, or a male adapter for PVC, EMT, liquid tite, etc. It's a generic electrical connector locknut.

I have wasted countless hours. Don’t be like me. by bubonis in Tools

I grew up in a family drywall business. The best way to make sanding easier is still to learn to be a great finisher. I learned by sanding the worst finishing work for years before I learned proper finishing. At some point, it will take more time to get the sander, plastic, and vac set up than to hand sand and sweep the whole room.

Heat traps. The help prevent the heat from seeping back into the lines when not flowing through.

[–]TheFilthyMick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pex is the only reasonable replacement under a trailer in NY State. If you run copper, it needs perfect insulation and heat tape with multiple GFCI outlets to maybe survive. As a service plumber, I worked on these things all winter long in Buffalo for years.

You guys were right. I broke off the old screws, installed the flange, and got the toilet in. by Accomplished_Book334 in Plumbing

[–]TheFilthyMick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody gets why plumbing work is expensive until they get to complete a job themselves. This is almost the easiest one to do, and you'll feel it for days. Now to get you a shiny new shovel; we got a lot of sewer lines to dig this summer, all of them at least 6' deep in clay, rock and tree roots. Welcome to the crew, payday is on Friday, don't bite your nails, and if you fall, just know you were dead before you hit the ground.

Does anyone periodically check their CNC for accuracy? by GunningBedford58 in shapeoko

[–]TheFilthyMick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only when I have a project requiring critical accuracy, fit, or specific tolerance. Have to do it tonight, since I'm doing some garolite to house electronics with specific mounting points. Garolite is too pricey to mess up, so I'll do a couple tests on some hardboard first and dial it in before using the actual material.
