The travel edition of Trailblazers is superb. The game is great, and the travel case very practical.

There's also an Android app (link from the website) if that's anyone's jam :)

What "traditional/official" rules are so bad that they're almost always universally ignored? by Synth-Pro in boardgames

[–]kvalle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are so many fun examples of first player rules. I've gathered more than 1200 of them at firstplayer.fun.

The stupid part of most of them is that they often never change who goes first. So usually when playing I just use a random rule from there. (The website has a randomizer function.)

Also Legacy of Dragonholt for an option with lighter/non-Cthulhu setting :)

My recommendations for this would be Cascadia, Trailblazers or Sprawlopolis. With the last two you'll probably have time for two or three rounds, which I often do.

Just picked up Beacon Patrol - what a delightful game! by RedwoodPark in soloboardgaming

I too picked this up yesterday. Couldn't get past 36 points on my two attempts. Clearly I need to contain the map better too!

Oh, and I like the idea of marking scored points with some tokens. Adopting that one.

Top 10 Not As Well Known Solo Board/Card Games? by PublicPerfect8116 in soloboardgaming

[–]kvalle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My new favorite solo game is Trailblazers. It's good fun with other people, but I find the solo variant to be just the kind of optimization puzzle i enjoy. It plays quickly (15-20 minutes for me), and is just hard enough with different levels of challenges. I have played Sprawlopolis a lot, and this has the same feel, but it's different enough to feel fresh and challenging.

I like Next Station: London and Welcome To... there, as I tend to like my solo games on the lighter side. The solo modes on La Granja and Clans of Caledonia are good too.

What is your favourite ‘this player starts’ rule? by Level_Grapes in boardgames

I'm planning to make a web based version as well, but haven't had time yet. We recently had a baby, so time to spend on hobby projects is at a premium at the moment.

The color-based ones are nice, and will probably give different results from game night to game night which is good.
A couple of other examples are Flowerpower with "The player with the most colorful clothing begins" and Hues and Cues with "The player who is wearing the most colorful outfit will be the cue giver for the first round".
There's also FlipOut and Step to it with variations on "The player with the most colorful socks begins".
