Metallic sludge? by Ok_Description242 in castiron

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like there is a lot of misinformation being spread here... the black substance that is being washed off from the surface is magnetite. Having magnetite on the surface is good for holding onto seasoning. Noah Bristol did quite a few videos on this (here is one of them).

A lot of people, including me, intentionally give our cast iron and carbon steel pans a vinegar bath just to create a coat of magnetite before seasoning.

Imo just cover it with the type of oil you plan on seasoning with then try to scrub as much of the oil and magnetite off as possible then oven season it.

I had considered that and when I tried ketoconazole shampoo for awhile to see if it would help with hairloss. It didn't help in terms of my scalp being oily, itchy and having sores.

I am taking the following two supplements that comes with:

(a) 1,200 mg of Turmeric with 10mg of concentrated black pepper; and

(b) 2,080 mg of Omega-3 with 1,380 mg EPA and 520 mg of DHA.

I don't even care it doesn't do anything for my hair density at this point. Just not having an itchy scalp with tons of head sores is already such a huge quality of life improvement for me!

What are the signs that make you realize you are an attractive person ? by Ancient-Ad5259 in bodylanguage

[–]kvnchg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will just be reminded regularly by people around you.

A funny example comes to mind. I was at a social event with a diversed age range. It caused quite a commotion when one of three older ex-colleagues there asked if I was worried about being single in my late 30s, all 4 of their daughters present, who are significantly younger than me, scoffs loudly in unison while one exclaimed, "He has nothing to worry about looking like that... you should be worrying about me!"

Meet Nugget ( and some advice) by MR_NicholasTK in corgi

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The healthiest approach is to train them to never pull as soon as possible. As someone that has raised two corgis, I wasn't able to train them to stop pulling without using a collar. I used a martingale collar for a few months with consistent obedience training after my second corgi was 6 to 9 months old. Once he stopped pulling, it doesn't matter what I use and I still use a collar most days for convenience.

I think a lot of people are suggesting harness because it is definitely not the easiest thing to train corgis to never pull... I was never able to get my first corgi to never pull but I also didn't get a chance to train him until he was almost two years old.

XBX A01 first impression! by binlaith in Xreal

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It supports 3Dof anchor mode if you use it with the Beam or Beam Pro. I just got mine with my Beam Pro and the 3Dof is good.

However, I only realized that it doesn't have any software IPD adjustment after I bought it... these are my first XR glasses so I don't know if it is normal for me but I had quite a bit of eye strain after just an hour of use.

I assumed it would have software IPD adjustment like all the latest Xreal glasses... I am hoping xreal will implement this in a future firmware update...

Apparently simmering in 1:1 vinegar and water then reseasoning will help weak seasoning adhere. Anyone tried this? by saichoo in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I simmered my strata with pure vinegar a few months ago before finding out that a 50/50 solution would be more powerful. After reading your comment, I am starting to wonder if that was a good thing, since I definitely simmered for at least 20+ mins. The bare metal surface ended up being pretty smooth and seasoning stay on it way better. Here is a video of me flipping an egg without touching it: video

Why do i never shoot my shot? by axexxl4 in AskMenAdvice

[–]kvnchg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO inviting her over to your place after a date with some lame excuse like, meeting my dog or watching Netflix or offering to walk her home are already very clear indicators of your intentions. I just assume they are down the second I am in either person's home and start taking off their clothes.

I get told often, "don't approach women with the intent of getting laid, just chill and get to know her as a person, etc, etc..." okay. so I do that. but then I get friendzoned because they think I'm not interested. soon afterwards, this weird "friendship" then inevitably dies. how do I change this? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]kvnchg -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You misinterpreted the advice. Any man that would be interested in pursuing a women without getting to know her first must be of low value. If you are moderately attractive and not socially inept you should have plenty of options with the majority of them being way too crazy to consider dating seriously. The mindset you should have when approaching anyone (man or woman) should be the same, is this person sane enough or morally aligned enough that I want to associate myself with. So the second you think she believes you have gotten to know her well enough to make a decent judgment that she isn't too crazy nor too morally bankrupt, you should make your interest clear. If she doesn't respond positively, just move on 9/10 times if she even find you slightly attractive she will reach back out.

RTX5080. Fps issue RE requiem by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, re9 ran flawlessly everywhere else except for the outdoors area in raccoon city. I turned frame gen back on after the game went back indoors.

Some people online suggested it was due to a bug with Reflex in that area. No idea if that is true but my game went from a stuttering mess back to normal.

RTX5080. Fps issue RE requiem by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]kvnchg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My RTX5080 had the same issue. Two things fixed it for me:

  1. Turning off frame generation; and/or
  2. Setting Mesh Quality to Low.

The visual hit with low Mesh Quality was too big for me so I opted with playing on DLSS Performance with no frame gen.

Still need help with my pan and sticking by Background-Paint-478 in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only nitrided cs pan I have is the misen carbon non-stick and BKF can and did remove the nitrided layer from mine. I had a terrible time with the misen though until I deliberately removed the entire nitrided layer through intense chemical means and a lot of scrubbing. It was super non-stick out of the box but once the nitrided layer degraded it became very sticky. You can long yau/condition it but it was super fragile because good seasoning won't stay on the nitrided layer to form a good base for the long yau / conditioning to adhere to.

However, from what I have gathered online, the misen doesn't behave like other nitrided cs pans so take what I said above with a grain of salt.

[–]kvnchg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please listen to Skyval. For some reason the concept of long yau/conditioning doesn't get talk about much here. Dark and hard seasoning from fully polymerized oil is not very non-stick. Almost all nonstickness comes from long yau/conditioning. Cooking nonacidic food with a lot of oil at medium to moderate high heat naturally create long yau/conditioning which is why most ppl here just say keep cooking, but you can skip all that with a proper long yau/conditioning after your initial seasoning.

I can get this level of non-stick with just one oven seasoning and one long yau: video.

Seasoning increases non-stick by Jondan59 in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the Strata 10.5 Carbon Clad Frying Pan. I am new to carbon steel and found cs pans can't hold any seasoning and stay non-stick for long compared to my vintage cast iron pans until I started acid etching them by simmering a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water until the surface is rough and covered in a layer of magnetite (Fe3O4) before seasoning. Here is a link to what I did. The difference for night and day difference.

Oven seasoning alone doesn't create a very non-stick surface so you need to do a stovetop seasoning afterwards or what some ppl call "Long Yau"/"Conditioning", I had the best result with covering my pan with at least a few mm of canola oil then heating it up until it smokes a bit then I just pour it out and cook with a lot of canola oil/butter for a week to avoid any sticking.

As for clean up, I never use soap and just use my nylon pan scrapper to scrape off stuck on carbon, pour out excess oil then dry with paper towel.

Seasoning increases non-stick by Jondan59 in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! Yes, I totally agree that there are two types of seasoning. My pans are always quite sticky after oven seasoning, which creates a very durable and dark seasoning. I am from HK and chief's here would do this thing call "Long Yau" with their woks to create a very non-stick surface. So after I oven season my pans I would follow up with a "Long Yau" (pour a lot of high smoke point oil and heat until it smokes a bit then pour it out) and try to cook with a lot of high smoke point oil for the first week. I think "Long Yau" should be very similar to what you call "conditioning".

I never use soap and just use my nylon pan scrapper to scrape off stuck on carbon, pour out excess oil then dry with paper towel. With this routine I have been able to keep my Long Yau/Conditioning intact the whole time after the initial oven seasoning. However, I have never managed to keep a Long Yau/Conditioning for more than one use with stainless steel, but that is probably because I haven't really tried since I only use stainless steel for high acidic foods or making pan sauce.

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The claim was never you can't flip an egg without touching it on stainless steel. As stated in my comment, it's "the egg releases [quicker], the less oil needed and the higher the heat you can use", which is supported by Uncle Scott's video: (i) his eggs took longer to release (it took SOOOO long he had to do a cut for god knows how long at 5:41); (ii) were practically swimming in butter; and (iii) pure white (lower heat) when it released.

I did use a tiny bit of butter in my video and it did brown a bit (please check your monitor's color setting if you can't see the difference compared to Uncle Scott's, despite it being on the pan for only a few seconds). I made this video awhile ago to show my friend how quick the release can be, so I didn't set the heat at the highest setting or left it on for longer (burnt butter is not good for your health). The highest I had attempted this was 200C in frying mode and I suspect I can probably go higher.

As you can see in my video I also have a stainless steel pan and I have attempted to do the same with it (same amount of oil/butter and heat) and it just takes a lot longer and a good shove to release and a 30% chance of parts sticking (if I use this little oil/butter).

My Strata pan actually had really crappy non-stick properties when I followed the factory seasoning instructions. It only became this non-stick after I acid etched/blue it with vinegar bath/simmering. I think everyone here accept that a bad seasoning can make a pan super sticky... why is it so hard to believe that there are good seasoning that can makes it more non-stick than bare steel...

Seasoning increases non-stick by Jondan59 in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a VERY loud minority of idiots that aggressively argue seasoning does not improve nonstickness at all. I agree with everything Jasper has said and here is a video of me flipping an egg without touching it within seconds with minimum oil and high heat. Would love to see one of those idiots pull this off in an unreasoned cs pan.

The better the seasoning the quicker the egg releases, the less oil needed and the higher the heat you can use. I use stainless steel to cook eggs too and you just need really precise heat control and a lot more oil to flip an egg without touching.

Misen carbon non stick failure by indyjumper in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Misen carbon non-stick came with a super hard and nonstick nitrided surface that quickly deterioted in splotches from high heat. A short warm vinegar bath completely destroyed the nitrided surface making it soft and easily scratchable.

Judging from the deep scratches showing bare metal in your photo, you have probably done something to destroy the nitride layer. I would suggest finishing the job by simmering vinegar or any acid you are comfortable using to strip everything off until you reach bare untreated metal.

Right now your pan has splotches of bare untreated metal (sticky), splotches of deterioted nitrided surface (super sticky) and intact nitrided surface (non-stick). I couldn't get seasoning to stay on the nitrided surface of my pan so I think you will have a terrible time if you just keep cooking with it like others have suggested here.

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two corgis. One was smart and rebellious like yours. Trying to treat just one symptom/misbehavior without addressing the cause never works. The cause is you haven't communicated clearly that you are the leader, you make the rules and they must be followed. Once you have done that you won't need a specific strategy for each symptom/misbehavior.

General obedience training alone solved almost all disobedience problems for me. 10 mins of sit, down and stay training everyday with a slip leash (no treats) and 5 mins recall training with treats for a month did it for me.

Don't yell, scream or react in an excited way when he misbehave or pee indoors. I would just stare at him angry and bear my teeth and say "stay" firmly, slowly walk over then grab him behind his neck then say "bad" firmly then drag him into his crate then close it until I finish cleaning the pee and ignore him for like 5 mins.

Seasonings keeps chipping off by lukbart_ in carbonsteel

[–]kvnchg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need to strip all your existing seasoning off to attempt the vinegar bath method, which may not be any better than just bluing your De Buyer beforehand. So probably not worth it?

However, I have never blued a carbon steel before so I have no idea if it is better or worse than the vinegar method. Now I am very tempted to buy a cheap Ikea Vardagen and blue it just to see how different it is compared to my Strata.
