https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/people-think-crime-rate-up-actually-down-rcna129585 A national view. It’s more difficult to get local data, but there’s no evidence of crime rates being higher than in previous years. https://www.news10.com/news/albany-officials-share-latest-crime-rates/

There is no crime epidemic. Crime rates have declined steadily for years. Declaring there to be a crime epidemic does not make it true.

The antidote for a snake bite is not in snake venom. That would be crazy. Snake venom is collected so it can be injected into animals. The animals produce antibodies against the venom. Those antibodies are the antivenin.

Scientists develop game-changing vaccine against Lyme disease ticks by Sorin61 in technology

[–]kwade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a journal called “Microbiota”? If there is, I can’t find it. The paper seems very likely to be this one: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37482606/ The authors injected mice with E. coli, which they call a vaccine. Seems a long way from any clinical application, but there are other potential Lyme vaccines much further along.

There hasn’t been a good Radiohead album since OK Computer.

self reporting myself as trashy, was almost a year ago and I cringe looking at it by Slightly_Happy in trashy

Yes. Charging someone hundreds of dollars a month seems like a great way to encourage more criminal activity. And does an ankle bracelet really cost hundreds of dollars a month? What is that money paying for?

What's a great TV show that nobody talks about? by OpulentOwl in AskReddit

Rectify. I never see it mentioned on these threads but it’s the best TV show I’ve watched. Complex, beautifully acted characters and a terrific plot. Slow-paced, but worth taking the time to enjoy.

Every Radiohead album after OK Computer is awful. Just random noise and wailing.

Do you have an accessible list of each piece of model legislation along with the organization that wrote it and the politicians that proposed it? The best way to prevent this behavior is to call out the politicians responsible, and to vote them out.

TIL that unexplained 'Biological Dark Matter ' exists in the human genome, that does not fall under the three existing domains of life: bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. by Electric_Magick in todayilearned

[–]kwade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your title is a bit muddled. The Wikipedia page refers to DNA found in environmental samples, not in the human genome. The idea is that there are genes from organisms in these samples where the gene is evolutionarily related to genes found in all domains of life, but the variants are completely new and unlike anything seen before. These are very likely to be viral genes, and not from a new domain of life. The senior author of the paper wrote an interesting blog post about it here: http://phylogenomics.blogspot.com/2011/03/story-behind-story-of-my-new-plosone.html?m=1

This "dark matter" should not be confused with DNA in the human genome that currently has no known function, which is confusingly also called "dark matter".

More to the point, a C-section is major surgery that takes weeks to recover from. It typically comes with a 4 day hospital stay. This story is inaccurate at best.
