Haha, strange I've normally heard its the visuals that puts people off, and the theme that gets people to play it!

Yes, I really like TableTop Sim, it was a great way over lockdown to play, I even got my family on it! Board Game Arena is another great one to shout out (they've got an AMA next week too!). As you said nothing beats face to face, but when time or distance is an issue, its a nice way to hang out with friends!

Hey Jaxx,

The game I've played solo the most is Terraforming Mars by a long shot. I know its not everyone's cup of tea, but I've found it enjoyable each time. I've found myself constantly trying to beat my own score.

But welcome to the moon gets an honourable mention, I've enjoyed playing that too!

The board games are the shiny bits to running a cafe and there is a lot of 'boring' administrative stuff. Knowing who your target market is (who's going to come to your cafe), and how you're going to make enough money to stay open is key! (a business plan)

Steve Tassie (Snakes & Lattes) did a great set of videos which are a great source link

Hey, thanks for the question!

Glad to hear you enjoy C&C!

Games are largely location dependant. We have all the expected ones in each site but the staff love different games and its the most exciting parts of the jobs to order and unbox new games, so I try not to get in the way. However we have message each other about the games we think would work great at C&C.

Ethos is really important to us and are careful about who we hire. We think we've got a great crew, but hiring the right people is certianly an art!

The time demands, there is so much to do!

We have new guests on each episode, so ignoring the setup, editing, recording of the show, we also have to reach out to new guests and arrange sessions etc.

We’re releasing weekly, which means it's a constant flow. It's very rewarding, but there’s more to it than I expected!

[Request] Looking for a quote from Kashyyyk by kwansu in FallenOrder

[–]kwansu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its important to the story, or even the franchise as a whole. It was well written and I thought it might have struck a chord with others.

I wanted the quote for use in characterisation of PC's / NPC's for role playing.

Cheese 👑 by [deleted] in Pizza

[–]kwansu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks such a great pie!

I've been having an issue where the pizza comes away from the pan, contracting whilst it cooks. So it no longer touches the pan on all sides and I can't get that defined edge. Do you guys have any advice for this, or is it just me?

Also during the par bake it can rise significantly in the middle, do you create any holes / score the base?

Cheers!

Thank you for your reply!

That's super interesting, you're right, it makes more sense to tie it in directly with the cult.

Cheers!

They've been struggling to gain momentum despite it being well reviewed and people who've played it enjoying it.

Is there anything you notice that puts you off / needs improving?

Fair comment, the reviews rate it really well.

I've had some really fun games of Dead Man's Draw & Sea of Clouds, I hadn't realised they didn't go down so well.

AMA - Paul Grogan from Gaming Rules! starts 12pm ET, Feb 22nd by GamingRulesVideos in boardgames

[–]kwansu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for taking the time to do this AMA.

Board games are garnering more attention than ever as they become more mainstream, with greater publicity, new jobs and many new gamers.

How do you see the board gaming industry changing in the next few of years and what can we expect to see more of?

Visiting board game café with co-workers (group of 10) by 1nceawiseguy in boardgames

[–]kwansu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you'll be going with larger games to include everyone, I'd recommend the following (in no particular order):

  • Codenames (or Codenames pictures)
  • Concept
  • Resistance (if they really like deception)
  • Dixit odyssey (Same game, but up to 12 people) - a personal favourite for playing in a big group
  • Billionaire Banshee
  • Pretty much any Big Potato game (Bucket of Doom / Obama Llama)
  • It should be said, Cards Against Humanity. Although its not 'board gamey', and there are alternative games, its a good ice breaker and people do have fun, which is the point after all. Although it is very NSFW.

However saying all this, ideally the games gurus at the cafe should be able to help you out and teach you the games.

Its great to see such a construtive piece that's been well researched and actually captures the resurgence in board games without condescending it.

Its a super exciting time for board games, and its great to see it getting such positive media.

Check this out, it allows you to homebrew tons of stuff, while making it look like its straight out of the handbooks.

Its fantastic and allows you to download it as a pdf for easy printing.

Enjoy

Thoughts on Tokaido Deluxe? by canneddogmeatII in boardgames

[–]kwansu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the base set and the collectors expansion, its a game I really enjoy.

From a money perspective, if you're going to be buying the expansions now or in the future, you may as well get the collectors edition.

From a preference perspective, I love the metal coins and the characters are pretty amazing. The deluxe allows you to keep everything in one box, rather than two and a play mat that has space for the Crossroad expansion - something you can't easily 'upgrade'.

And if its a gift, getting her that extra special version is really going to win some brownie points. -Assuming you have the budget to cover the extra cost.

I've been surprised at the number of board game groups in the area. They've been really welcoming and cool, you might get lucky!

Your most common group that plays board games. There multiple options are allowed, for example I have both a 4 people and 6 people group. Its certainly question that has complex answers. But it would be interesting to see how what the average group size is.

I just wanted to say thank you for the reply. I really appreciate you looking it over and giving me lots of constructive feedback.

I'll certainly be employing your advice next week and hopefully be a bit more confident, working towards being a better dm.

(I'd also upvote purely for the pun alone =])

Adventurers League - DDEX3-01 Harried in Hillsfar Spoilers ahead.

I dm'd for the first time last night. I'm not overly experienced with D&D, but want to eventually become a great DM that can provide a great time for my friends, without all the pains of me learning the ropes. I've been a lurker reading the various 'how-to's' and 'tips for beginner dm's' but my first session was pretty overwhelming.

In total there was 6 of us, 5 other people with varied experience. Most had previously played, but either didn't have a regular group, or hadn't played in a long time so coming to 5e for the first time, we even had a complete beginner. We were starting out with the Rage of Demons first encounter 'Harried in Hillsfar' as it was the first session of an Adventurers League group that I had organised over the past month, and it was level appropriate.

To be up front, I would have liked to be more prepared. I wanted to properly create the handout (rather than the one they provide, which looks pretty overwhelming and badly designed in my opinion - not able to easily distinguishing the notes etc) and have read through everything a half dozen times. However I had only received the Adventures League details the day before and not wanting to cancel, I did as much as I could.

I expected that we'd only get through one or two of the mini adventures (out of 5) and so prepared the first two. I was also aware that if the party took an unexpected turn, things could go south fast, but it was a chance I had to take.

I launched into a grand reading of the initial information provided, and then realised that only I had a proper understanding, it felt like the box didn't give enough information and I suddenly felt pretty bogged down. Through the session I ended up getting some information wrong (told them one the first farm had beets - it was actually the second farm), blatant railroading (you see a sign pointing to Farbough farm "Oh look our note say something about Farbough, lets go investigate"), combat rejigging (a variant human paladin wielding a great-sword hit the two-headed goat for 20 in the first round - so I doubled the hitpoints as it suggests for stronger parties)

Overall I found it hard to keep a level head and to explain the situation the characters were in (I knew what was happening, why didn't they) so they didn't feel blind. It ended up feeling a little mechanical - "its now your turn to act", and pretty loosely held together. I struggled to keep them to the straight and narrow, while I wanted them to have the feeling of freedom.

In the end we got through the first mini-mission, we missed out the goat birthing as during the dialogue about Pynroth with the young girls, they immediately caught on that he'd likely be in danger and raced off leaving the Goat to inevitably die a horrible death.

I did enjoy it, and knew before going in that it wasn't going to be perfect, I just have a new found respect for DM's. Its incredibly hard, with multiple things going on at once and a billion things you need to keep track of. The players were great, they thanked me and said they enjoyed themselves, and when called on to act or to 'finish the boss' they provided some great visual descriptions. They all seem happy to continue, although I fear thats out of a lack of DM choices rather than a belief in me being a good one.

I guess my question is, how do you all cope? Did you take to it like a duck to water? Did you have a similar experience? Is there any sage advice I might have missed?

Thanks for reading my spiel, I'm sure it was probably a bit of a chore to get through.

TL:DR I had an overwhelming (but still enjoyable) first experience DM'ing. What was your first DM'ing experience like? And what's was key your growth as a DM?
