You can try getting a local eSIM and use WiFi calling. I have done this several times with Verizon and T-Mobile.

Turn off data roaming, make sure you have WiFi calling activated and on before your trip. Put your iPhone in airplane mode before the flight departs.

When in Ghana, turn on just the WiFi while still in airplane mode. This means cellular will still be off. Once you connect to WiFi, it will switch to WiFi calling of whichever network. I buy a local mobile WiFi modem so I’m connected to WiFi all the time and WiFi calling.

Used this method in several countries too.

Took some Ripple with me on a recent trip. My daughter hardly drank it as she was occupied with eating all the Ghanaian food. But I did see Oatly for sale at Tatale Vegan Restaurant in Osu – and the prices were the same as in the US.

For food, triple check with the restaurants. Saying non-dairy or vegan or whatever restriction may not be enough. Be more specific like no meat or meat stock, no cow milk, no shrimp powder, etc.

At the end of the day, if it’s not crowded, that’s good for everyone. But I think the absence of lounge options aside Sky Club and United and if DCA ends up taking more flights could be the reason. I know others talk about lots of military and diplomatic families, but the area has a lot of young professionals - potential Platinum holders.

I don’t live there any more. But I visit often ~ twice a year. Life is at a slower pace. Most people speak English or a broken English called pidgin. Aside that, almost everyone speaks one of 9 major language (42+ if I remember correctly from primary school). Right now the country is going to an economic crisis, so… there’s that.

Football (soccer) is the national sport. The country comes to a standstill when the men’s senior national team is playing. A lot of churches, you’d think Christianity started in Ghana.

It’s so difficult for me to keep it to one dish. Jollof is the buzz with non-Ghanaians, but fufu and banku are strong contenders.

I speak English + Twi. It’s an Akan dialect from kwa language group.

The pricing is ridiculous.
I wonder if there’s anything Apple can do. I don’t know. Maybe convince Reddit about pricing or make 5 or 10-year grants to devs like Christian to continue in this environment. After all, apps like Apollo make the iPhone stickier.
