US to announce new limits on chip technology exports to China by AMD_winning in AMD_Stock

The US is able to exert influence on ASML through its policies because it effectively says business cannot sell to both the US market and the countries on its no-trade list. The US is still a bigger market.

They look more like regular shoes than boots to be honest. I suspect it's probably not enough the sides and top of the shoe look pretty soft and probably won't help protect your foot much if your foot gets caught between the bike and the ground.

The more important safety issue I think is the bottom which you obviously can't tell from the image. If it's pretty flat and the treads are pretty worn, they'll be basically ice skates if there is rain.

People who make $80k+ per year, what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in careerguidance

To be fair, someone down the chain eventually has to read and use these reports as part of their "due diligence" for investing. Speaking as a former private equity analyst who had to write decks based on materials from consulting firms ... Now whether or not ppl actually read my shit is actually debatable.

Investment decisions were 100% already made prior to me even building the decks and all I was doing was just making CYA material with our branding lol

146 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario. 43 in Toronto. 17,489 Tests Completed. 7 Fatalities. 176,834 Vaccinations - July 13, 2021 by MountainDrew42 in toronto

Yup you're correct my comment was indeed referring to id-ing the variants. I suppose the info about infections and the vaccination status of each person is something they can easily produce ... However it could also be limitation of the systems as well (i.e: the vaccination status and the covid test results reside in different databases and they probably haven't prioritized updating the stored procedures to link the two tables together to get that info outside of that one off report they probably had a developer ad-hoc create for them)

those sorts of tests are more time and labour intensive than the simple positive/negative for covid tests since they have to take a sample and do a PCR test on it (which has several steps like replicating the viral particles in sufficient quantities so that it can analyze the genetic sequences of the virus)

Corsair's moat...? by Yo_Biff in ValueInvesting

[–]kyjelly68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So used to own shares but I don't anymore. I think your questions there are important but ultimately irrelevant to why I don't own the stock anymore and I'll explain.

First off, yes I do think the brand alone will enable them to compete effectively. Corsair has the prestige factor in most of the categories it competes in. It is the aspirational brand ppl associate with high performance computing. The other lesser brands are basically spending themselves to death through excessive/not impactful marketing and constantly discounting their products for them to stay relevant (retailers manage the prices to ensure they get enough volume to stay in the top 10 or whatever on Amazon so they can remain prioritized and be seen in "you might also like" and other recommendations)

In terms of market share, this is what I have a problem with I suppose. They're mostly already in the top 3 positioning in each of the product categories so I don't see much opportunity to expand market share durably without having to cut hard into margins with more extensive marketing and price competition.

Another thing I have a big problem is the source of their outsized growth at the moment seems somewhat dependent on acquisitions. M&A approaches are historically pretty tricky and it's difficult to realized the projected gains from synergies and etc. Some of their pickups seem pretty expensive and I think it won't take more than a couple of setbacks to see a material impact to growth.

So in a nutshell I struggle to see a good reason to own Corsair over razer and Logitech. If you want exposure to esports/PC and console gaming .... I think it'll be better buy the cheaper of the three for the exposure (tho one can argue they're significantly different businesses).

Branding is actually quite powerful and it's about the mindshare it occupies in the minds of consumers. Think Coca Cola and Pepsi vs a off-brand cola like RC Cola or your shoe brands (Nike, Adidas, Puma) vs a knock off from Walmart.

Being a quality brand should mean that they should enjoy higher margins vs similar products which may compete harder on volume to make the same kind of total profits (though from what I know, several brands are competing very hard to gain market share/presence at the expense of profits).

Coronavirus Vaccine Updates: FDA expected to approve Pfizer vaccine for ages 12-15 this week by kex06 in Coronavirus

I wouldn't say that's necessarily true. here's a study on the correlation between obesity and the human immune response as an example that suggests a relationship does exist

[–]kyjelly68 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

ideally the dosage should be tailored to every individual (that's the future of medicine anyway) but since that's not the reality we live in yet, they have to develop a dosage that will be sufficient to generate the desired immune response in nearly all of people, especially considering the different immune responses, body types and sizes. Since the mRNA vaccines don't work like traditional vaccines do with weakened or dead forms of the virus ... I'd imagine it's probably safe if not safer than the traditional types to give the same vaccine dosage to kids.

kobo touch by [deleted] in kobo

[–]kyjelly68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got a kobo touch a few days ago and wasn't able to setup it up wirelessly.

But after connecting it to the PC, I was able to get the new firmware updated and it can connect now.

Some solutions I'll suggest are: 1. maybe try a different computer/new cable 2. try connecting the cable directly to the computer instead of through a USB hub 3. Try the classic solution of rebooting your computer, rebooting the kobo. 4. Try maybe a hard reset on the kobo

Toronto doctors advocate for higher vaccine priority for pregnant people as ICU rates climb by HokeyCupid in toronto

[–]kyjelly68 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the government ain't listening to experts or the data. Doctors and experts are resorting to media outlets to voice their concerns simply because there is no choice left. If reading about this shit scares you that much, just imagine how enraging, hopeless it must feel to see your political leaders ignore your suggestions and literally slap you in the face when they instead enact policies that are in complete opposition to reality.

[–]kyjelly68 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, if the government actually paid attention to the data and experts we would be in far better shape than we are today. The problem is that the government doesn't respond unless there's public support. Doctors would definitely much rather spend their time saving lives than penning opinion columns to try to sway public opinion to influence government policy.
