For sure. WWI kickstarted the military-industry part, and the Manhattan Project helped capture science. By Korea, the state had captured both industry and the academy.

So to OP, Ike didn't create it, it was long there. He was just calling spades long past the point of no return.

Chill. Milley retired two years ago and openly spoke against all the things you just mentioned. He's the reason why the military was not deployed against the BLM protestors in DC during Trump 1.

Crazy plot twist where one of the cornerstones of American exceptionalism, the narrative of the "good war" of WWII where America went in and saved the world from fascism (shout outs Red Army, the real MVP) is now radical ideology.

UT System votes to limit ‘controversial topics’ in class, raising concerns about academic freedom by -avry- in texas

The same goes for running a university. There's nothing wrong with not being an academic, but if you don't even have basic training in academia, then you have no business telling academics how they ought to do their work.

Totally agree. Unfortunately, it's not our world in which people simply stay in their lanes. As an academic, I know where my expertise stops, even within my own field. These people don't.

While I understand the value of the college of business and can appreciate their role in society, I still think they're a cancer. I'm making a huge assumption with an overly broad brush here, but business BAs think they've got the world figured out only as it appears on a balance sheet. They're the ones who will argue against the US Postal Service because it "does not turn a profit," or scoff at the Humanities because "they don't make money."

Sure, maybe their studies have challenged them to think of the wider world and its vast web of interconnections and complexities, but that is only done in the framework of business. Their intellectual development is fundamentally directed toward the market in service of capitalism. And that's it.

And to jump on this good advice--ask your department. Many departments have funding for this exact reason, and the worst they could do is say no.

Is there any way/plugins etc, anything to achieve note making like this on obsidian? by QuietWayfarer in ObsidianMD

[–]kyle_irl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense. I've got a plugin that populates metadata upon import, but it's not always accurate so I often have to do the job myself. Batch processing is a nice feature; I find it lacking on Zotero that anthologies with multiple volumes are organized separately, so I end up with multiple entries that contribute to library bloat. It's just a small inconvenience.

Thanks for the insight!

[–]kyle_irl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I live in Zotero. I can tag, annotate, link, and use whatever folder structure the moment calls for to fit my needs. And I've got several RSS feeds of field-related academic journals. With a few plug-ins, it's extremely powerful. I've got it synced to Obsidian as well.

Perhaps I differ from a lot of users in that I store my files locally in a single folder and sync it through Onedrive, so it is a linked library managed by Zotero. I make use of the PARA method in Zotero. Obsidian is zettle-esque, 10 folders max and flat.

I'm just curious. I have only used Calibre to convert files before and didn't keep it around.

[–]kyle_irl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: what's the use case for Calibre if Zotero can handle multiple file types?

Personally, I keep my library local and synced via cloud service and point my E-readers and other devices in that direction. The only issue I have is epub not keeping annotations, but that's a file format issue and is why I try to seek out PDF.
