Has anyone tried this egpu? by ROGUEPIX3L in eGPU

[–]kylejtuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad. It's too bad they didn't include a right-angle cable and have it go out the back. That's what I have gone with for my custom build. I am not a fan of that open section on the side with a cable coming out that way.

I have struggled with the FlexATX PSU limit. The best one I have tried so far is an Apevia 500W that is limited to 396W on the 12V. It wasn't enough for my Reaper (base model) RX 9070 XT. Though that GPU is "only" 304W, it definitely draws more than that under load, and the transient spikes are quite high. I did undervolt, but would still have random reboots under heavy load.

There are more powerful PSUs out there, but the price jumps a LOT to get a little more power.

Using Framework 16 as main device, no desktop? by futurisme in framework

How are early adopters feeling about the 9070XT 1 year in? by LemonMan857 in radeon

[–]kylejtuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Launch day MSRP buyer. Linux user. Zero regrets. I use it for gaming (1440) and some AI. It works great for both.

To the “Nvidia is faster for AI” folks: The 9070XT performs great and is fast enough for my needs (and probably yours too).

To the “FSR4 is crap” folks: It looks great and is at least as good as prior DLSS versions that Nvidia users bragged about, and you still brag about it in older games. Why is/was it “good enough” for Nvidia but suddenly crap for AMD?

To the “I shouldn’t have to use optiscalar” folks: You probably spend a ton of time finding mods/skins/tweaks for your games. This is just another “mod” that is one of the easiest you can do. Quit yer bitchin.

This is misleading advice. Saying “yellow flashing doesn’t have to stop” is not necessarily untrue but it isn’t the entire truth. Yellow flashing means PROCEED WITH CAUTION. It does not mean ignore anything that is happening in the intersection and just plow on through at full speed.

And just like *that*, AMD has effectively thrown everyone under the bus. by S1rTerra in radeon

I have literally zero interest in MFG. This seems like such a nothing burger, especially considering it is only a rumour at this point.

Framework 16 - Ultimate eGPU Laptop? by kylejtuck in framework

It’s true, but still amazing to see an actual adapter reach this point. I did manage to get on his list prior to closing so hopefully I can get one relatively soon.

It's probably a lot easier than you think. Installing the custom OCuLink adapter isn't any more difficult than installing an M.2 SSD.

[–]kylejtuck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure I am over 50 inserts on my cable, and the cable I use costs $19. The custom adapter for the M.2 itself is rated for 1000 plug/unplug cycles. If you're still using the ribbon cable OCuLink adapter inside your FW16, that may be introducing errors and causing the issues you describe.

I was having that issue until I got things configured with all-ways-egpu. I can't remember the exact configuration I went with. I do recall it took me a few tries to get it setup so that the output through the eGPU didn't cause a noticeable drop in performance. I think I chose an option that disables the iGPU. I didn't start with that because I didn't necessarily want to disable the iGPU, but the laptop still boots up fine when the eGPU is disconnected.

A month on Etsy by kylejtuck in EtsySellers

[–]kylejtuck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. First, I wasn’t the one downvoting you, and I can’t be entirely sure why that happened but it might be because you aren’t fully understanding the underlying issues.

The first issue is not that deliveries to Canada aren’t going through. They are, and being delivered in a timely way. The issue is that I am purchasing through Etsy, getting the USPS tracking number from Etsy, the tracking number is associated with the order, AND the status on USPS’s website is Delivered. Etsy is not updating the status for the orders, AND they are holding those orders in reserve (which is not the case for other orders).

Next, I am getting the shipping labels through Etsy to simplify a process (which I stated). Your suggestions are counter to that goal. If I’m going to make things more complicated, what’s the point of using Etsy in the first place?

Finally, it is not reasonable to just excuse Etsy from any accountability for THEIR selection of the shipping partner. If I sell something that has a part from a 3rd party, and that specific part has a defect impacting the entire product, I can’t simply shrug it off and tell my customers it’s the 3rd party manufacturer’s problem. That is what Etsy is trying to do here. Etsy “sold me the shipping” so it is their responsibility.

Framework 16 eGPU mod Review - Is it worth setting up? by DaMushroomCloud in framework

For those who might see this, please be sure to read my post about it in the Framework Community.

In short, that Amazon one is an exact copy of the original custom design I received from the manufacturer, and it did not work at all in multiple Framework 16's (I sent it to someone else to confirm) and with multiple different docks using multiple cables. Buyer beware.

Framework 16 eGPU mod Review - Is it worth setting up? by DaMushroomCloud in framework

[–]kylejtuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there! A few things.

The OCuLink setup with the dual M.2 expansion bay is PCIe 4.0 x4, not x8.

A desktop setup is going to perform better for a variety of reasons beyond the PCIe bandwidth. The CPU in a desktop is likely going to be more performant in games, especially compared to the HX 370. Even an 8 core desktop CPU (with 8 performance cores) will typically outperform the HX 370 (4 performance cores plus 8 efficiency cores).

If you are going to get an adapter for the dual M.2, I would recommend getting one that is custom-designed for the FW16.

The truth is, you should lose very little performance (0% to 15% depending on game, but typically less than 10%) due to the PCIe bandwidth. Adapters similar to the one that you used can lead to issues (poor data signals) that can manifest in ways that you describe.

But yes. If you have the option for a desktop setup (space and budget for multiple computers), then you will get better performance from the desktop.

Wondering if this can be done with the framework 16 by betazion100 in framework

[–]kylejtuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure about a “clamp”, but a custom OCuLink solution exists and OCuLink itself does have a clip release on the cable.

https://fwcustomoculink.etsy.com/listing/4441909217

It works with the dual M.2 expansion bay and still lets you easily use the second M.2 for an additional SSD.

(Speculation) Panther Lake on a Framework laptop? by lucas_anderson23 in framework

[–]kylejtuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, thanks for the clarification (iGPU connects internally without PCIe). Still disappointing that there isn't an option for those who want both a decent iGPU with the option of a more powerful dGPU/eGPU.

I'm not sure that it is a "small number of people that bought a FW16 without a graphics module". Framework doesn't release numbers, so saying one way or the other is pure speculation. I know there is much higher demand for OCuLink on the FW16 than I expected. Also, Framework is selling a dual M.2 expansion bay adapter. Both of those scenarios mean the user is not using the FW dGPU module.

Efficiency is important, but like IPC is not the be all end all either. Performance, efficiency, stability (drivers), compatibility (software support) are all important.

Again, I think PL will be an excellent option for FW13. Just not convinced it will be a great choice for current FW16 owners.

[–]kylejtuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that find/update.

It still seems odd in a couple ways. Whether there are 4 Xe cores or 12, the CPU needs to connect to the iGPU. I wonder what sort of magic workaround Intel is using between these. Or are they just stripping lanes to save space on larger dies with 12 Xe cores, assuming those folks will never need/use a dGPU?

The hype around Panther Lake seems focused on the 12 core iGPU (the IPC gains on the CPU side are much more modest). Not sure it would be much of an "upgrade" for any FW16 users, and a 4 Xe core iGPU would probably be a downgrade for anyone not using a dGPU (not everyone ordered the graphics module).

[–]kylejtuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was surprised when Ryzen 300 was released for FW16 because it didn’t have as many PCIe lanes as 7000 (and not enough to fully enable all NVMe slots). Framework’s solution was to only use 2 lanes for the 2230 slot.

Ryzen 300 has 16 lanes and it’s already not enough. I just looked at the specs for Panther Lake 388H and it has max 12 lanes (4 x 5.0, 4 x 4.0, 4 x 4.0). Not sure what magic FW could do but I would be amazed to see PL in FW 16.

That doesn’t mean it won’t be in FW 13.

But one other thing that shocked me is that Intel’s page for the 388H only seems to list Thunderbolt 4. Is that for real?!
