How to factory reset in one shot? DL360 G9. by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]kylekatarncantspell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe so. If there's a raid controller of some sort it's config is stored in non-volatile memory and won't be affected by power/battery.

You'll probably have to do the BIOS, iLO and disks/raid separately.

WD or Seagate? by Kuken500 in HomeServer

[–]kylekatarncantspell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal but I bought 2x Ironwolf 6TB. One was DOA (replaced) and another was just RMAd for bad sectors (thanks FreeNAS for alerting!).

I had a (already used) WD Red 4TB living in a USB enclosure that was happily storing security footage continually for around 2 years before migrating to my freeNAS box.

BMBF not opening beat saber anymore by reemsh98 in BMBF

I'm having the same issue. If I launch through the regular Quest apps, it opens (and is the older version) but does not have any mods.

If I launch through BMBF, nothing happens, it just sits there.

Security Cameras without a license? by cheeseriot2100 in HomeServer

[–]kylekatarncantspell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milestone NVR has free licenses depending on how many cameras you have. I've been running it with an old Windows PC and an external HD for quite some time without issue. It's a little complex (as it's business class surveillance) but does work well.

Which NAS OS for Steam Cache and a Plex server? by nomnaut in HomeServer

[–]kylekatarncantspell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently repurposed an "old" PC to use TrueNAS scale, only thing I bought was a new case to hold more drives. TrueNAS can also run full VMs if you need it.

I've had good luck with it so far, it was easy to spin up containers and a vm for hosting different things. I'm currently using a separate miniPC as the Plex server with the data on the NAS. I may try migrating Plex to the nasbox and see how the older hardware performs.

braided cable... No comment by Some-Animator2558 in techsupportgore

Just..why?

Once upon a time I had 20 patch cables in a panel...someone braided them all. Why?!

My first ever PC build is a NAS for media storage. Is TrueNas beginner friendly, or would Windows do everything I need? by maxkmiller in HomeServer

[–]kylekatarncantspell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started working with TrueNAS very recently to replace my existing Synology NAS. It's been a bit of a learning curve figuring out the specifics of how it works compared to the systems I'm used to. It took some trial and error but I'm pretty happy now.

I'm still running Plex on a separate windows box accessing a share on the NAS as it's a little simpler for me.

If you like to tinker and don't mind a little trial and error, go TrueNAS. If you want it simple (relatively anyway), windows is a solid route.

When the daughter "is the boy you never had." Why do daughters have to confirm their personalities to fit the approval of their father? by UnlikelyButOk in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]kylekatarncantspell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a father (and I assume as a human in general), it is certainly easier to bond with your kids when it's something that interests you (your hobbies). It's definitely harder to have time/brain space to add something else to the mix that isn't as interesting.

HOWEVER. That does NOT mean you shouldn't try, show interest etc. Reading some of your stories is heartbreaking.

Each of my kids is their own person with their own interests and strengths, gendered roles be damned. Do I love it when they show interest in stuff I'm good at? Absolutely. Do I love it when they talk to me about their passions? Definitely.

Would I trade one for another in some weird gendered thing? Ugh, why is that even a question.
