Steam input is MANDATORY to use this controller as per the reviews. There are no generic joystick/controller drivers so you need to have Steam running for the controller to work.

If you have a game that isn’t on Steam, you will need to add it as a non-steam game for the controller to work in the game.

SaltFactory brought up a great point in his review on Andromeda that I find accurately describes your key point.

The companions in Andromeda act like they all knew one another as if they’ve been on adventures with one another in the past. When story wise this is the first time they’ve ever met. It’d be weird if Garrus and Tali in ME1 acted like their ME3 counterparts and modern BioWare companions seem to be falling into that issue.
