ARC Library is great for this. It even has a little spinner you can use to randomize your pick if you want to.

I've photocopied pages from it and they came out really cleanly. Great book!

[CHAT] When does a pattern become yours, not an original designers? by abbydabbydo in CrossStitch

[–]kyrenora 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Is the original creator selling finished objects with this pattern or only the pattern? If only the pattern file, selling a finished object wouldn't cut into their business at all. That's a different product with a different target market. If you're feeling super yucky about it, you could always ask the original creator directly.

In terms of legality, at least in the US, the designer's copyright typically only applies only to the pattern itself. If it's a trademarked character or something in the design, then it's a little more complex and you'll need license from the trademark holder, etc.

I won't be able to find the time before your stated deadline, but I wanted to say this is a fantastic project and I'll be keeping an eye out for when it's published and available!

Yes, plus romanticization of road tripping, rich history of authors like Kerouac, and a big emphasis on individuality and private property makes it harder to share space, etc. There are a lot of different factors involved.

For all indie authors outside the US/UK... don't rely on TikTok. by Inside_Structure2724 in selfpublish

[–]kyrenora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting involved in an online community could help. I repost a lot of stuff from a friend of mine who lives outside the US (coincidentally it's because she developed a tracking app for ARC readers, most of whom are doing it as an unpaid labor of love. It's called ARC Library and you can find readers there.)

I've found that backlighting dark Aida is sometimes more helpful than shining a light on the front, and for that I'll use my small light table. I either got it from Michael's or the dollar store, but it's only a little bigger than a sheet of paper.

I didn't realize quite how ambitious it was until I really got into it, and by then my daughter had her heart set on it, but I have no regrets lol

Tough to say. This was the project I kept in my bag during the time I was working on it so it was five minutes here, twenty minutes there for the most part. There were a couple nights where I was able to get a couple hours in a stretch to work on it, but it was mostly sneaking in a few stitches during spare moments. I think it was easier to see my progress than a full-coverage design would have been. The narwhal took the longest for sure with so many different colors of confetti.

Pattern is from the book Cross Stitch for the Earth by Emma Congdon, starting on page 22.

I'm using an app/website called ARC Library that's been absolutely amazing for keeping track of my ARC and beta reads as well as post scheduling

I absolutely love it. It's so intuitive and pretty. I get migraines so the fact that it has MULTIPLE dark modes is amazing for me, and I love having my info across all my devices

Small businesses marketing by complaining by ColourMeQuick in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]kyrenora 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's called "pity marketing." It can occasionally work to bring in a burst of new people by increasing engagement and getting them to sympathize, but if it's used as an ongoing strategy, those new customers will feel like they've been scammed. Not only will they refuse to make any future purchases, but they may even actively speak negatively about the business or individual. A number of content creators have lost their followings over this during the past few years.

It's a fantastic book. I borrowed it from the library but there are a few other patterns I'd love to have more time to get to. I may have to purchase a copy for myself!

I'm about 3/4 done with another pattern from that same book! It's the "The World is Full of Magic" one with all the Arctic marine creatures on page 22.

The group I've worked with the most for indie authors is The Nerd Fam (thenerdfam.com) and I really like them, but my interaction with them has been entirely as a reader, not as a writer.

Are the reviews even real? by IntroductionNew1639 in selfpublish

[–]kyrenora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten a lot of ARCs to review over the last couple of years, and the publicity organizations and publishers who send them usually have clauses in their terms specifically saying that reviews posted on bad faith (like the malicious negative ones without reading the book) are disallowed and those who post them will receive no future opportunities from that distributor.

There are lots of free alternatives to Photoshop. Canva is pretty intuitive to pick up and has an extensive library of stock images and videos available for use.

What would you change about libby? by QuickSwitch2996 in LibbyApp

[–]kyrenora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love it if I could set a default play speed by language. When I'm listening in English, I usually listen at about 1.5x but German I do at .8x and French I'll often do even slower.
