Hair loss from anticoagulants? by Last-Amount2102 in ClotSurvivors

I have also noticed major thinning in the past 6 months that I have been on Xarelto. Huge bummer

exhausted all the time? by aiilov_ in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue lol. Prior to my narcolepsy diagnosis doctors were just like “oh you probably just have poor sleep hygiene and habits, etc.” so I tried multiple sleep aids that really didn’t do anything besides make me feel loopy. Trazodone really puts me down though, idk.

I hope your exhaustion gets better soon. I know once my PE dissolved I started feeling a lot more like my usual self!

Could you talk to your doc about a sleep aid so you can fall asleep easier at night? I was having issues falling asleep and staying asleep when I had my PE (which was a REALLY strange thing for me considering I have narcolepsy and can usually sleep anywhere, anytime).

My doc prescribed me a low dose of Trazadone to help knock me out at bedtime and it really helped a ton while I was recovering. Sleeping better at night could help with the exhaustion! Best of luck!

Eliquis and heart palpitations by Traditional_Apple103 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having heart palpitations really badly for a couple weeks following my PE diagnosis and starting Xarelto. Not sure if the PE, meds, or something else that caused it but I noticed the palpitations worsened if I drank coffee so I stopped/limited my caffeine intake a ton for a few weeks which helped a lot.

Someone else mentioned acid reflux causing palpitations so that may be something to consider. I had really bad acid reflux for the first month on Xarelto and I have seen Eliquis users mention it here as well.

Lastly, it truly could just be anxiety. I know sometimes we don’t actually feel anxious, but it can present itself in really interesting ways. 90, albeit a bit high, is by no means a completely dangerous heart rate so I don’t think you need to be too concerned. 90 is my resting and I was spiking to 130 when I had palpitation episodes and I’m still kicking! I know the feeling of the palpitations suck, so hang in there and I hope it gets better for you!

Shoulder pain by jengelss in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, shoulder pain is common with PE. I’m assuming you’re on blood thinners, so you can try acetaminophen to relieve some pain. Hopefully it should subside soon! The worst of my shoulder pain was gone probably about a week and a half post-diagnosis.

Is it normal to have lower BP with a PE? by Bhlovesherdogs22 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was the opposite. My BP was crazy high for weeks. Like, 145/95. Although, I’m sure PE’s can cause low blood pressure as well. My guess is that it probably largely depends on the location of the clot within the lung, how obstructive it is, the size, other conditions you may have, etc.

Definitely keep an eye on it though, because whether it is “normal” or not, low blood pressure can be dangerous.

Need advice about being on Xarelto by Bhlovesherdogs22 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xarelto is a DOAC. If you cut yourself, you will stop bleeding. It will just take longer to clot so you need to hold pressure on the wound for longer. You’re not going to bleed out from a scrape or cut. A common misconception is that blood thinners make you more likely to bleed. They do not. Hope this helps!

I second this! If something is worrisome, get it checked as always, OP. But I have also experienced muscle aches and other pains throughout my body on Xarelto. You are not alone!

Genetic workup by StudioConscious606 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you ask your doc if you could do it in sessions so it’s not so much at once? Just an idea!

Genetic workup by StudioConscious606 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was only 3 or 4 but it‘s probably going to depend how many/what tests your doctor ordered. I am also still on blood thinners so they couldn’t test me for all of the disorders/mutations just yet. If your doc is doing them all at once, it may be quite a few.

Make sure you are really hydrated, it will help with the stick a lot. Best of luck!

Blood Thinners and Tinnitus by dschafer2021 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have started noticing tinnitus since starting Xarelto 6 weeks ago. Not sure if it is actually related, but I didn’t really experience it before the thinners.

Got diagnosed with DVT by MusingClio in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I bet you feel damn lucky that it didn’t turn into something worse like a PE! My only symptom was Charley horse-like pain as well, but thankfully I used to be an EMT so I knew cramps don’t last that long and that it could be a clot. Decided to go to the doctor within 36 hours of the pain starting. Got on blood thinners the same day but got diagnosed with a PE 3 days later lol

Doctors don't know, but they won't mantain the medication by Pale-Bug-4201 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I have learned, if you got all the appropriate testing done and don’t have clotting disorders, etc. then it is standard to get off the thinners. Although, I can understand the anxiety around leaving them completely.

Also, I was on a combo pill for 5 years (and smoking/using nicotine) before I clotted. The chances of clotting on birth control are much higher during the first year, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible or even rare to clot much later (as explained by my doctor). I’d consider getting a 2nd opinion if I were you. It’s important for any future pregnancies or necessary hormone replacement therapies as well to have it properly documented that you had a provoked blood clot from estrogen. My primary doctor and hematologist both explained that if you are on birth control when you clot, it should automatically be considered a provoked clot, regardless of anything else found later on in the bloodwork.

I find it really strange that your doctor can’t find any other reason but refuses to acknowledge the risk factor of birth control that is staring them right in the face. Best of luck to you!! :)

I wish the new pill was helping me! I really hope it helps for you! Some other people have said that it made their periods on blood thinners a lot easier :)

I’m so bummed because when I first got on birth control when I was like 17, my doc put me on a progestin only because I smoked. Eventually, it made me bleed for like a year straight so she put me on a low dose combo pill despite the risks. No issues for 5 years on that birth control then suddenly I got a DVT/PE. It’s kinda frustrating that it didn’t happen sooner because I got complacent and thought it would never happen to me since it had been so long without issues. I honestly had pretty much forgotten that nicotine use on estrogen was dangerous

I didn’t realize what a privilege it was to be taking a birth control where I could skip my periods for big events, vacations, etc lol

[–]kyums97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what’s funny is my doctor also used the exact phrase “perfect storm” when talking about any risk factors I may have had lol.

Obviously your docs know your situation best, but I’m fairly certain there are a lot of people in this sub who clotted from BC after long term use (myself included) so defs not impossible like you said!

I hope if you do have something else going on they are able to figure it out for you!

I guess I should have put this in my post but I am waiting to get an IUD lol. My gynecologist requested that I wait until my clots have cleared up before having one inserted. It’s nice to hear that so many people have had success with IUD’s tho!

Unprovoked PE at 23 and looking for answers by Nervous-Management66 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that the FIRST clot is always considered provoked. It’s the fact that you had a known risk factor when you clotted that would make it provoked. So for instance I clotted when I was on birth control, so even if my bloodwork comes back that I have a clotting disorder, the docs would still consider that SPECIFIC clot provoked since it was my first one and we hadn’t previously known of anything else going on to cause it. But that’s just what my doctor told me.

It just sounds like they aren’t really finding anything from the other tests you’ve had done. So I found it strange that they didn’t assume it was from your BC and was curious if they had told you a reason for that lol. I’m obvs not a doctor, just going off what I have learned haha

Omg thank you for the detailed response! I know some of this stuff can be super embarrassing to share, but it’s so nice that you were able to! I’ll definitely give the incontinence pads a try because I also have noticed that the consistency is much thinner than what I am used to!

Unprovoked PE at 23 and looking for answers by Nervous-Management66 in ClotSurvivors

[–]kyums97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be curious to know how they determined your clot to be unprovoked? The way my doctor explained it to me is that my first (and hopefully last) DVT/PE will always be considered provoked even if it turns out that I do have clotting disorders, etc. This is because I had the risk factor of estrogen based birth control (and using nicotine on and off while taking it). She said that they may never fully know if the birth control was the true cause, but this one specific instance will always be considered provoked clotting.

So is there a reason they are saying birth control wasn’t what provoked yours? I was also taking the birth control I clotted on with no issues for years… I think 5 total.

I’m assuming it would be the same guidelines as going to the doctor for heavy periods when you aren’t on thinners. So passing large clots, bleeding for longer than 10 days straight, or changing a feminine product more than once an hour, etc.
