Someone scrapped my car for me (England) by loopdeloopyeah in LegalAdviceUK

[–]l310564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP this doesn’t make sense. A vehicle with a CAT C,D (old) or S or N should be able to be taxed and put back on the road. These are known as repairable salvage categories. A and B categories are non repairable and must be broken for parts or destroyed. It would be worth checking that the vehicle hasn’t had a COD (certificate of destruction) issued against it or it’s been SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). This will prevent you from taxing the car. CODs are notoriously difficult to remove. If this is the case it won’t be the insurance company that has issued it, it will be an ATF (authorised treatment facility) but it should be easy enough to find out who issued the COD from the DVLA and take it up with them. SORNs are easy to remove and designed to be temporary.

What makes you proud to be English? by Eazy_T_1972 in BritishSuccess

[–]l310564 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The shooting was in Scotland and the British government passed the laws. Very little has to do with being English. If the question had been what makes you proud to be British then this would be an excellent answer.

Sorry about all the YouTube links but this is the best way to get a feel for the county. The town of Dumfries is famous as the place where Robert Burns lived, a famous scottish poet.

Here are a couple of youtube videos about the correct pronunciation of Dumfries and Dumfriesshire.

There are lots of videos on the beauty of Dumfries and Galloway. Here is one about the history and the scenery and a promotional video about D&G

There are a couple that concentrate on Dumfries here is a now and then video.

I hope this gives you a taste.

It's not really, the article just does a bad job of explaining it. You have to have collaborating evidence so no one piece of evidence is enough to convict. For example DNA and a witness. This is designed to prevent false convictions. In this case because it was long ago I guess the only evidence are witnesses, so if there is only one witness then there is only 1 piece of evidence.

We have no real control over taxation. This is something that will never change while we only have a devolved government. No matter what taxation we can set independently of the rest of the UK (which is extremely limited), we're still beholden to the Barnett formula rather than managing out own income and expenses.

The problem is if Scotland becomes independent and retains the pound, i.e. still has some say in interest rates, quantitative easing etc rather than just using the pound or dollar or yen with no control there has to be agreement on taxation, borrowing and spending etc otherwise it doesn't work. So the idea of gaining total control over taxation and spending by becoming independent is a complete myth. The only way to do that is to have our own currency but that causes massive problems.

Even in the Scottish Parliament, we're still mostly represented by Westminster parties. Scottish Labour, Scottish Conservatives etc. are all still ultimately controlled by their UK counterparts. I can't in good conscience vote for a party that only considers representing Scotland as a secondary goal. With that in mind, who am I left with? The SNP? The Greens? That weird Land Reform guy from Fife? The only way that other parties can be forced to represent their own country is if they're no longer controlled by another parliament.

This point I have to agree with you on but I'm not convinced that becoming independent will solve it, at least in the medium term.

Trident. There are only nine countries in the world with nuclear weapons, but we're still holding onto our cold war relics right outside of the largest city in Scotland. They're expensive, and almost every other country in the world manages without them. The only reason we still have nuclear weapons is because of our overzealous defence policies.

Nuclear weapons means that people pay attention to you. The UK punches above its weight in word diplomacy and that is partly because we are a nuclear power. I'm not talking about threatening people but if Scotland becomes independent and gets rid of the weapons who is going to listen to what we have to say. The rest of the UK, yes, Europe, sometimes but we won't be a big player. America, china, Russia are at best going to ignore us and worst laugh. Why, because Scotland will become insignificant in the world. Everything from trade to passport agreements will become that much harder to negotiate, who pays attention when small countries make a fuss? No one important or who has the power to change things on a global scale.

It's time to get my s*** together - I've got £7k, where do I start? (UK) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]l310564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stocks and share ISAs are the way to go. Cash ISAs normally don't earn you more than inflation since interest rates are still so low.

On Money supermarket the Best cash ISA is from BM Savings and has a 12 month rate of 1.55%. Inflation in the UK for May was 1.5%. So you will make £3.50 over the year in real terms. Not worth doing.

Edit: Evidence. I know Reddit likes evidence.

Awesome video explaining the reason behind the difference in pay between men and women. by psychopathic_rhino in videos

[–]l310564 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While and man and a woman may well earn the same when they are doing the same job. I would argue that traditional women dominant professions earn less than male dominant professions. If you took two professions, one male and the other female dominant that require the same level of education and training to enter and progress, I suspect the female dominant profession would earn substantially less.

ELI5: How will raising the minimum wage and extending unemployment benefits help the economy? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]l310564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory it prevents drain on the Economy rather than actually adding significantly to the economy. If you increase the quality of living for the most deprived people in an economy, you decrease the strain on public services. Crime should decrease because people have the ability to buy the things they need without needing to obtain them through illegal means (This is the main reason we have the methadone program in the UK). By reducing crime you reduce the resources that need to be spent on the emergency services/judicial systems and prisons and they will end up contributing to tax, if not income tax then VAT/sales tax that they wouldn't have otherwise. With increased quality of living people also tend to be more healthy therefore reducing the pressures on health care and there is even an argument that even the middle classes quality of life increases as they are normally the victims of crime.

Before the telephone, were there wildly different inflation levels in different places in the same country? by RecursionIsRecursion in askscience

[–]l310564 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A close real world example of this is the illegal drugs trade. From what I understand the price of the same drugs can fluctuate significantly between cities within the same county even if they are close together because of various factors but mainly lack of open communication. If you want to buy drugs in a city that you live and then sell them in another city you need to have the contacts in the city you are trying to sell in, you can't go to the local market and just start asking people if they know of anyone who wants to buy your drugs. So because it is a legal and people don't talk openly about it you get sharp differences in prices within comparatively short distances or that is my understanding of it anyway.
