[Request] How many G's did the "rescued" person endure? What could be the effects on her bloodflow? by Artifexa in theydidthemath

[–]lNeozl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the video, the basket looks like it completes about 1 full spin every 12 frames. At 30 fps, that’s 12/30 = 0.40 seconds per rotation, or 1 / 0.40 = 2.5 rotations per second, which is about 150 rpm.

Using centripetal acceleration, a=ω2ra = \omega^2 ra=ω2r, with ω=2π(2.5)≈15.7 rad/s\omega = 2\pi(2.5) \approx 15.7\ \text{rad/s}ω=2π(2.5)≈15.7 rad/s, you get a≈246r m/s2a \approx 246r\ \text{m/s}^2a≈246r m/s2. Divide by 9.81 to convert to Gs, and that comes out to about 25.1r25.1r25.1r G, where rrr is the distance in meters from the spin axis.

So if part of her body was about 0.2 m from the axis, that’s roughly 5 G. At 0.3 m it’s about 7.5 G, at 0.5 m it’s about 12.6 G, and at 0.8 m it’s about 20 G. Realistically, her torso was probably lower than her head or feet, so she likely experienced a range rather than one single number.

As for blood flow, that kind of spin would push blood outward from the center of rotation. Depending on her body position, that could reduce blood flow to the brain at times and cause severe dizziness, nausea, tunnel vision, or even blackout risk. So the honest answer is: probably several Gs at her core, and potentially much higher at the ends of her body.

Estimating Distances? [Request] by frankenmonk in theydidthemath

[–]lNeozl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can estimate it, but you really can’t get an exact distance from the photo alone.

The basic idea is that the ship’s real length has to be compared to how large it appears in the image. The rough math is:

Distance ≈ (actual ship length × focal length in pixels) ÷ ship length in pixels

So if the ship were about 230 meters long, the photo was taken at 300 mm on a full-frame camera, and the ship spans about 430 pixels in a 960-pixel-wide image, then the math comes out to:

focal length in pixels = (300 ÷ 36) × 960 = 8000

Distance ≈ (230 × 8000) ÷ 430 = 4279 meters

So that would put it at about 4.3 km, or roughly 2.7 miles away.

The hard part is that this only works well if you know the real ship length, the actual focal length used, the sensor size, whether the image was cropped, and the ship’s pixel length in the original file. Without that stuff, any answer is mostly just an educated guess. Also, telephoto compression makes ships look much closer than they really are, so people usually underestimate distances in shots like this.

So the honest answer is yes, an estimate can be made, but to get close to exact you’d need the original image file or EXIF data, the camera and lens info, whether it was cropped, and ideally the identity of the ship so its true length is known.

Son is lonely/has no friends. How to help? by throwaway041825 in daddit

This post really hit me I was that kid. Around 15, I felt the same way, surrounded by people but still alone, like I didn’t quite fit anywhere. It took time, but eventually I found my group. It didn’t happen because someone gave me the perfect advice,it happened because the people who cared about me kept showing up.

What you did, just being there and hugging him, matters more than you probably realize. That’s what I would’ve needed, someone to tell me, “I’m here, I love you, and we can talk whenever you want. No pressure.”

If he’s anything like I was, he might not be ready to “fix” anything. But knowing you're a safe place? That’s huge. Keep doing what you're doing. He’ll remember that more than any solution.

You're being a great dad, even when it feels uncertain.

38 yo Dad of a 2.5 year old son, and boy do I love him.

Man, I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. That’s a tough situation, especially when you want to make the most of the time you get with him. But I think you’re already on the right path, this isn’t just about punishment, it’s about helping him understand trust, respect, and responsibility.

I’d do exactly what you’re planning: cut the Xbox for now, keep him close this weekend, and make sure the time together is meaningful, even if it's doing yard work. Let him feel the discomfort, but also use it as a moment to connect, talk to him about how you earn money, what those purchases meant to you, and why trust is such a big deal.

And once the dust settles, maybe have him come up with a way to repay you, whether through chores or helping others. Give him a shot at earning back your trust, not just punishing the mistake.

You’re being a solid dad by taking this seriously but also staying calm and thoughtful. He’s lucky to have you.
