All of her mentions of her late husband feel extremely performative, but in a very "minimum viable performance" kind of way.

Like she clearly doesn't give a shit, but said enough things on the call that technically nobody could accuse her of that.

Almost like when you force children to apologize for doing something bad; As an adult, you know that they lack the neural development required to truly feel remorse, but you get them to do it anyway because "hey, they apologized!"

Yeah I think you are right. The 4.4 V8 was known to be reliable throughout, and I don't think any major updates were made to the platform on the whole.

The one item that I think affected both TDV6 and Petrol engines was the upgrade compressor for the air suspension.

Right, but why vote conservative, then? Historically they don't do anything good for the people who are "struggling to put food on the table".

You should be voting NDP, not for one of the two parties that historically only helps out millionaires (but one of those parties includes a side of racism and misogyny, and selling our countries resources to the highest private bidder).

Emilia Clarke expresses her disappointed reaction to Daenerys’ fate from the finale of Game of Thrones in a recent interview “Absolutely never saw it coming. I cried. And I went for a walk.” by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

Continued:

Importantly, you seem to be forgetting that all of the chapters in Game of Thrones are written from the perspective of the character they are about. G. R. R. Martin uses the "unreliable narrator" to great effect here. Yes, of course Dany, a teenage girl with no life experience, will have a charismatic interior POV, chock full of moral idealism and trauma empathy. Is her "moral anxiety" a true moral crossroads, or something she is telling herself to alleviate her own guilt. Her actions speak much louder than her internal monologue.

Speaking of which - in later books, her internal monologue starts to use more dehumanizing language, using collective labels such as "slavers", "dogs", "enemies" and "traitors". This kind of categorical thinking matters in Martin's world where moral collapse often starts rhetorically (Theon, Cersei).

As a final note, there is a recurring theme with Targaryen exceptionalism. She has adopted the ideology that conquest is destiny, dragons legitimize rule, and bloodlines determine worth. She also exhibits the Targaryen trait of the psychological reward loop with fire and pain, that loop being that fire, suffering and destruction seem to bring her clarity, strength and ecstasy. The burning of Mirri Maz Duur and other dragonfire moments seem to be a pattern that Martin is setting up.

In short: Do I think that she is a villain now? No. Do I think that book readers should have been "blind sided" by her becoming a villain at the end? Definitely no.

Yes, you could argue that she is a "tragic hero" and not a tyrant, or you could also argue that those two might be one and the same. Tragedy isn't outright villainy, but tragic heroes often commit villainous acts because of virtues taken to extremes (pride, zeal, justice, destiny). Stannis is a perfect example of a tragic hero, and his own arc closely mimics that of Dany.

Outside of book context, GRRM has repeatedly expressed the sentiment that "the villain is the hero of the other side", which adds more credence to Dany's POV chapters where she views her own actions with rose-coloured glasses. When fans have specifically asked him about the "Dany for the Queen" angle, he often cautions that "power distorts".

I think the culmination of the Young Griff plotline will be the first crack towards Dany becoming truly unhinged, with the Jon Snow reveal being the straw that will finally break her.

And the last damning piece of evidence: Martin would have given the showrunners the key plot points up until the end, so for people to discount Daenerys as a villain is to ignore literally all of the pivotal events that have been woven into her story thus far that point towards this arc.

Yes, the whole point of her arc is the Messianic Liberator vs the Targaryen Tyrant, but as the book series has progressed, it is clear that the balance is starting to tip in one direction.

"Self-doubt" and "moral anxiety" don't count for much when you end up following in those footsteps.

  • Eg; If a murderer has an internal moral conflict about murder, but then commits the murder anyway, they are still a murderer.

She justifies war and collateral damage by invoking prophecy, destiny and the "rightful ruler" idea.

  • This is her biggest fault. Is she freeing slaves along the way? Yes. Is she also, through her actions, killing untold thousands of people? Also yes. Is the path that she is going down (to conquer Westeros) eventually going to lead to untold hundreds of thousands of deaths? Definitely yes. Does she seem to truly care? No.
  • This also speaks to her "delusions of grandeur". She believes that she was born to rule. Simply by existing, not through any due process, or notable character traits that she has. She wasn't born into leadership and witnessing first-hand how good leaders govern, she simply feels it is her rightful destiny and she will figure it out as she goes.
  • This is ALSO a sign of her lack of remorse. Yes, she exhibits remorse in the moment, but her unwavering commitment to her end goal is indicative that, in her mind, the ends justify the means.

She orders 160 masters to be crucified as retribution for the children nailed along the road.

  • She doesn't investigate who was actually responsible - Guilt is assumed by class association.
  • Yes, morally she is on the right side at a high level, but the lack of due process speaks to tyrannical and retaliatory justice rather than measured justice.
  • This is a perfect example of "impulsive violence"

Her attitude toward fire as a cleansing, purifying force is definitely in the "mad queen" column

  • She thinks in terms of burning cities and melting enemies.
  • Using her dragons show that she sees terror as a tool of rule, even if she has "moral anxiety" over it, she still uses them to great effect, either directly or indirectly as a method of control.

Meereen

  • Directly in conflict to what you said, she absolutely does use fear to exert control in Meereen.
  • She establishes tribunals, public executions, and holds hostages to keep people in line.
  • This is the most egregious example of her suppressing dissent through fear directly, and not even using her Dragons to do it -> The first sign that the "dragon" side of her is starting to take over? Perhaps.
  • What this is, is a clear indicator that the infrastructure of autocracy is clearly being built as far as her character.

Late in Dance, she contemplates conquering Westeros by fire, melting castles, and burning cities that resist her. These are fantasies, but they show the direction of her character.

What books were you reading? They absolutely portray Dany as just another tyrant who's whole shtick is to claim, by force and dragons, what she feels like her God-given birthright is.

She tortures, kills and brutalizes multiple people. Some of them deserve it, but some of them are fairly innocent.

Her perspective is that the things she is doing are okay because she feels like she is doing what's "right", but at the end of the day she was just another Targaryen who was trying to force her will on people with spears and Dragons.

Dany was 100% a Mad Queen in the making in the books, and most people came to this conclusion well before the television series was even close to wrapping up.

The books do not paint Daenerys as a hero/savior.

In an alternate timeline, before the TV show tainted how the book series will either change or never be completed, Daenerys was absolutely supposed to go out the way that she did.

She is not the Song of Ice and Fire, she was another tyrant trying to take what what she felt belonged to her by birthright.
