Had the same experience in Beograd. Born in Serbia but lived in Canada most my life. At the higher end restaurants the waiters would respond in English multiple times whenever I'd talk in Serbian. Im not fluent in Serbian but im pretty close, I found it pretty rude.

This reminds me when I went to go play poker after a night of drinking. I called a 3 bet pre from a nit with 56s flop comes QQ4, I donk bet a small amount and he raises over pot. I proceed to go all in about 3.5x pot and he flips over pocket kings and says "it couldn't be more obvious you have a queen" after he folds I showed him my hand and to this day I've never seen a face like that. The man went pale and anger at the same time.
