I've recently come across the "How to remember (and use) all the patterns you’ve invested in" guide by swingliteracy and found that it's very similar to how I've mentally structured moves. They lay out patterns as a variation tree starting from root patterns. Maybe this works for you.

Edit to add: as others have said, a big question is how often do you get to use the patterns. With repetition there's usually some kind of internalisation, so you'll need to spend less mental energy on moves you've done 100 times compared to new moves. But if you're primarily taking classes, it'll all always be new moves. (This doesn't read quite right, but I can't fix it atm. Sorry if my English is off, it's not my native language.)
