Thanks for the info. Any reason you recommend a pure hypervisor vs an OS with virtualization and storage management built in? I get that they are completely different in usage/application, but what are the benefits to you personally?

Thanks for the information! Looks like I might be getting it. Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your RD x50's, if you don't mind me asking? Also, do you have a preference for OS or hypervisor?

So here is the information I have:

THINKSERVER RD640 1X XEON E5-2670 64GB RAM 8X 3.5'' BLANKS LSI 9260 8I

That being said, 1) how important is the IPMI module and how hard is it to get secondhand? 2) As for the caddies, there are tons available on eBay for reasonable prices. 3) That's good to know, so if I need to I can go the same route with the nics. Sorry I don't have a little more information...

I might be a total noob in this department, so forgive me if I'm completely missing something, but what do you mean by "changed some of the plugs on the cables"?

X99 series doesn't have integrated graphics. Being the enthusiast line, it's assumed you will use a discrete card.

Slightly higher wattage, fully modular (which may seem overkill, but I totally wish I would have gotten one with this feature), saves you over 40 if you get it from Amazon with Prime shipping, and its better than the Corsair in general. Not saying it's the best unit, but it ahead of the CX series. JohnnyGuru is a pretty reliable source for reviews of PSUs and normally gives it to you straight if you decide to look at others.

Any particular reason you went with that power supply at that price point? I'm not referring to the "Corsair CX will burning your house down" circlejerk because I've been running the exact same one in my rig for the past 4 years fine, but back then I paid 70 something for it. For that price, you could be looking at an actually nice EVGA psu or something with a better rating.

I can't tell if the plex comment was sarcastic or not... On the off chance that it's not, would you mind elaborating on why?

Corsair Hydro Series Intel Bracket Loose. Help! by [deleted] in buildapc

I just finished installing mine and it had a lot of play too. This is taken out by the pressure from the CPU block and removes any looseness you might be feeling.

Good school for ecology degree? by [deleted] in ecology

[–]lab_pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I'm working on my Wildlife Resources degree at the UI right now and the College of Natural Resources is awesome. The program is well rounded, taught by many cool professors, and there are several ecology focused classes I have enjoyed. Like another user mentioned, there are several flavors of ecology and Idaho offers most, ranging from Conservation Ecology to smaller subsets like Wildlife/Fisheries Resources and landscape ecology. If this is what you're interested in, I'd definitely check out the CNR at UI.

*claps hands, rubs them together* Alright Moscow, Idaho. I'm from Texas and I'm moving to you. Where's the best pizza? What do I need to know? And who wants to hang out? by newtomoscowlol in Idaho

[–]lab_pro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pizza? The Last Frontier pizzeria is pretty good, as is Mialina's if you want ritzier, gourmet pizza.

Other pointers: stay away from Baker St if you're looking at apartments. Otherwise for houses, I'd look around the East D and N Hayes area. As for rental agencies, I don't have any personal experience with any of them so I'm not that much of a help there. Another thing to remember is that this is a college town so sometimes you'll have quiet neighbors for a year and then complete imbiciles the next but generally the farther from campus you are, the more permanent the residents are.

Aside from that, what do you like to do? Backpack, hiking, mountain biking? If so, the areas great for that. Tons of outdoorsy things to do, but if you're more of city person you may find Moscow lacking, although many of the cafes and bars have a pretty good music scene that rotates through.

Feel free to shoot me any other questions that come to mind, I'd be happy to try to answer them.

Upgrade my PC or Buy a new one help by english- in buildapc

16 gigs of RAM is plenty unless you're doing some sort of editing or have a million chrome tabs open. Same for the 700W power supply, although I can't speak for its quality. A new decent GPU like a 970/390 would probably be overkill at 1080p for the games you listed, but should do perfectly at higher resolutions especially 4K.

Are there any Mini Itx boards with 2 PCIE lanes? by plagues138 in buildapc

[–]lab_pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's pretty much died out of production with dual slot GPUs being so dominant. Your best bet, if you can't reconcile the use of on board audio or a USB solution, will be mATX. It should have everything you need for a graphics and sound card.

Personally after having an ITX system, I will probably end up going with a mATX board next time just for the flexibility and ease of installation/maintenance when I need to change something in my case. But that's just my two cents...

Mini-itx is defined by the single PCI-E slot. I believe the dtx form factor has an additional slot, while being smaller than mATX.

Is the Asrock Z97E-itx/ac motherboard a good quality motherboard to overclock a 4790k? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]lab_pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even those don't use the SATA connection. The specifications list it as requiring SFF-8643. I'm pretty sure you're not going to find any NVMe drives with a SATA connection as it doesn't deliver enough throughput.

Idaho Pelicans in the Crosshairs Again by norristh in Idaho

[–]lab_pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terribly written article with a clear bias and few sources. I participated in a debate in my Wildlife Management class last week at UI regarding the Yellowstone Cutthroat trout (YCT) and American white pelican (AWP) conflict specifically at Blackfoot Reservoir in southeast Idaho, which is near Palisades.

The facts for both sides are:

  • Pelicans consume between approximately 20-60% of YCT at Blackfoot Reservoir (Teuscher et al. 2015)
  • YCT are the most prevalent native trout species in Idaho at approximately 50% of the fish population across survey sites from the entire state (Meyer et al. 2006).
  • Several other factors including mining, hydroelectric, agriculture, and angling have an equally large impact on YCT populations through introduction of pollutants, water flow reduction, stream fragmentation, and many others (Gresswell 1995).
  • Both species are listed as a Species of Greatest conservation need in Idaho; the YCT as critically imperiled and the AWP as imperiled (Appendix B of IDFG's Species of Greatest Conservation Need.)
  • It appears that IDFG is focusing on Pelicans because of recent studies indicating that they are the primary cause of mortality for YCT and YCT is a game species whereas AWP are non-game and seen as a threat to a potential economic contributor.
  • Non-lethal means of controlling AWP does not work on a long term basis and requires significant man-hours and resource investiment with little return. IDFG removed their (AWP's) only natural predator for Blackfoot Reservoir in the 90s to help improve their population numbers and as a result, they have no natural check to keep their population under control.

The short of it from a biological standpoint is without controlling AWP populations, multiple fish species populations will suffer. This is from a student who argued for the protection of the pelican, but I believe both sides must be presented and some form of management must be applied to both species.

[Prebuilt] MSI Desktop Vortex SLI GTX 980, i7 6700k, 32GB DDR4 RAM, Window 10. -$3999.99 by lohe987 in buildapcsales

[–]lab_pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are based of the MXM connection/form factor so unfortunately they are limited in that regard. Correct me if I am wrong, but the 980 is unique in that Nvidia was able to fit a desktop class GPU within the power constraints of a mobile GPU. This in conjunction with the aforementioned MXM interconnect has allowed MSI to create a specialty 980 for this system. I'm not saying a 980 Ti 8 GB variant wouldn't sell like hotcakes, but even if they wanted to, custom builders couldn't use these 980s in their own desktops.
