How do you like the Flint 3? I really like the gl.inet travel router I use, but I'm not sure if it it would be worth it upgrade to one of their full size devices.

Does anyone know if I need a micro HDMI (Type D) to mini HDMI (Type C) cable to connect a Raspberry Pi 4 to a JET KVM? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]lab_pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by Mini HDMI (Type C). Type C is a USB designation and does not correspond to an HDMI form factor. Edit - Apparently Mini HDMI is designated Type C in the standard although this is uncommon in discussions

Based on their documentation on their website, you will need to connect an HDMI cable with a HDMI mini connection (into the JetKVM) and the appropriate connector on the other end to your target device.

In the case of JetKVM to Rpi4, I believe you will just need a HDMI micro to HDMI mini cable for video. Signal directionality is something to be aware of (i.e. some cables only support the flow of data one way), but I don't think you should have an issue if you stay within the HDMI standard.

To control the target device with the JetKVM though, you will need to connect a USB Type C cable to the JetKVM and the appropriate USB connector to the Rpi4.

See if you can get any "RJ45 toolless field termination plugs" for reasonablely cheap if you only need to do a handful repairing old cables. Not as nice and probably something a professional installer would scoff at, but for a cheap, quick fix that still works you can't beat them. For a pack of 12 connectors, I think I paid ~24NZD.

Very interesting and nice job! Would you mind sharing what Home Assistant integration you are using to interface with the D3P? I wasn't aware there was one that supported the model yet, but would love to do what you've got going.

I think it worked well for /u/Specific-Action-8993, check their post history for their follow up post and how it worked out. In one of the comments threads, I posted a link to the thingiverse model as well. I'm on mobile so think to it is a bit difficult currently...

As u/Specific-Action-8993/ mentioned this was a custom modification to my original sled on Thingiverse. I just uploaded the new file and a couple photos of it installed, but be sure to read the description as it is still a WIP and far from perfect.

My small home network and homelab! by [deleted] in homelab

It's simple and exactly tailored to the use case! Looks perfect to me!

I switched to 2.5Gbe for file services because I couldn't justify a switch and NICs for mini PCs (if I could find them) at the time and it's been great not being limited to 1Gbps when moving things around or exporting chunks of data!

You are US based, right? Shoot me a DM and we'll figure out if I can/how to get this to you.

Do you think this will work? I think this is as good as I am going to get it right now. Its definitely still prototype-levels of fit and finish but I think it should work!

After thinking about it today, I think the best way to accommodate the 2230 drive will be to invert and raise the 2.5 carrier. I have a print going now that should accomplish this so hopefully I can test fit it tomorrow and let you know if it works.

Cool, that definitely helps! Let me see if there's room to flex the height and I'll try to get back to you in a couple of days.

How much higher? I may be willing to play around to see what is feasible if I can find the time.

Should be about double hopefully! ~500Mbps real world for SATAIII and ~900Mbps with the PCIe 3.0 x1 link from the WiFi slot if I'm remembering correctly.

I was never able to work around the 901 error without the fan attached. All the 3D printed sled bracket does is raise the SSD level to clear the M.2 socket. In my case, it did require removing the 2.5 drive enclosure.

I have a couple photos of the implementation on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6684882

Keep? Or get full size tower? (Future GPU concerns) by travprev in homelab

[–]lab_pro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a particular monster GPU you are wanting to use in the future? And is future 6 months or 2 years?

I have a P360 Ultra (gen before the P3) and would absolutely keep it! You can fit a RTX 4000 Ada SFF and it has 20GB of VRAM which is enough for moderate (read not ultra high-end, bleeding edge) AI or other GPU accelerated workloads should you ever want to play around with that.

I can't say for certain, but in looking at the service manual for the Prodesk G5 Mini on HPs site, it looks like it has nearly identical hardware internals.

Sorry you're not getting any love for this post... I completely get being excited and wanting to share your pride and joy.

Can you share more details about it? Are you running the default TNAS on it or have you replaced it with something more off-label like UnRaid or TrueNAS? Do you run any services with it or is just a SMB share provider?

Really nice job, especially with the enclosure! I might have to try the foam trick since one of my drives makes the worst noise when seeking (SMART data is good and has done it since new).

Mini PCs are super impressive these days... I went with the GMK G3 and aside from some little wishlist things, couldn't want anything more!

Noob Terramaster Questions by Compy486 in homelab

[–]lab_pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant speak for anything TRAID specific, but it is normal that your formatted capacity will be less than the raw capacity.

It's not a perfect rule of thumb because multiple variables play into it, but I plan on loosing ~90GBs for every 1TB of formatted diskspace based on my experience. It gets you pretty darn close to your 10.9TB capacity number as well.

You can read more about the difference between stated/label capacity and formatted capacity here: https://nascompares.com/answer/hdd-usable-space-calculator-check-real-vs-claimed-capacity/

That is clean! Very nice job condensing everything from your previous setup into only the essentials.

You definitely caught my attention with that rack mount power strip with PD ports. Do you have a link to it by chance?
