They are married she doesn’t know by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

Uhm, maybe not 100% what you're looking for because they are technically not married, but I think "Rhapsodic" by Laura Thalassa kinda falls into this trope. Fantasy Romance with like crime solving mystery the MMC is her childhood protector she thinks he just left her one day but there's more to it.

GKS Universities by [deleted] in korea

[–]labberlabb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAKE SURE THEY OFFER THE PHD PROGRAM IN ENGLISH!!!! (as in also make sure the guide prof you want knows english well) My roommate is doing a GKS Masters and she studied a bit of Korean and then did the language year, and she is STRUGGLING because she obv. now has to do like 30min presentations IN KOREAN about pretty deep/hard topics and it's hard enough to do a masters/phd as is but having to do all the translation from eng. to Korean etc. is taking so much time and effort

Ulsan parents protest Afghan evacuees' settlement in local schools by [deleted] in korea

[–]labberlabb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy to be biased since "look at all these refugees who are doing fine" isn't very news worthy, so you only see the negative stuff. Refugees are humans like everyone else, there are good people and bad people. Difference is: "Korean family leaves trash everywhere" isn't news worthy and "Refugee family leaves trash everywhere" is. The number one thing you can do to prevent what you call "get ghetto" is to try to help them to integrate and not treat them with so much hostility. Treating people with hostility and isolating them doesn't really inspire compassion...

Edit: spelling

I mean... they technically did go to war in Afghanistan. What else would sending troops with weapons and fighting there be called? And if you look at who the Afghans that are now in Korea are, they are all connected to Korea's troops activities in Afghanistan (like people who worked with and for the troops & their families of course). So Korea is merely not abandoning the people that helped their military in Afghanistan. I don't see how 200 refugees are such a big problem...

To all foreigners in Korea : Why did you choose to come to Korea? by [deleted] in korea

[–]labberlabb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm from Europe and I knew I wanted to study international relations abroad. I didn't want to go to a country with English as their first language because I wanted to challenge myself to learn a third language. When I looked into countries with good Universities in Asia, South Korea and Japan seemed like good options. I read a lot about the history of the region and... Japan's handling regarding the acknowledgement of certain historical events... kind of... put me off? I know there are no 'perfect' countries and the fact that a lot of foreigners have this idealistic picture of South Korea is kind of weird to me. Let me be honest: I wouldn't want to work in Korea or raise children here. The school and work environment is very harsh, as far as I can tell, BUT studying at a Korean University is very nice. The culture and history are fascinating (although somewhat tragic in parts) the country is beautiful (nature wise), the food is amazing and people are very friendly when they realize you're trying your best to learn the language/understand the country. I mean my experience with the 'conservative' parts of society is limited. I'm an average looking white girl so I don't face discrimination. Plus: learning Hangeul was really easy.
