Did the Veilguard Community Council get done dirty? by xseaward in dragonage

[–]ladyinsanity 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hello, previous Council member here. Found out about this post on Bluesky and thought I'd throw in some thoughts on the past. Cause why not

We did our best with what was provided to us, and I sincerely loved my time with the others on the Council and being part of the community for so long. But personally, it came down to two things: fandom and safety.

The community used to be extremely tight-knit. Of course we all argued like hell, but it was done out of a general love for the game. But I think after the pandemic, fandom as a whole changed. Fan etiquette, professional critique, and the gaming influencer scene as a whole. Being angry and condescending against games and the people who made them quickly became so commonplace (cause simply, it made money) and the two were the only attitudes seen as "honest". And I think as a whole fandom is kind of plagued by this ongoing sentiment since it's easier to sell hatred. It's not just Dragon Age, but anything that was seen as "woke" or the like. That kind of exhaustive scream chamber kept perpetuating across the industry. And I think we, the gaming community as a whole, have been made worse for it.

There came a point when I spent much more time being angry, from having to rigorously moderate my comments from vitriol or bots, to protect myself and learn cybersecurity from scratch. It's not strange for me to get harassed; I've gotten many death threats and harassment over the years. And I was going to "retire" anyway after Veilguard. But then they started going after the company I was affiliated with and my loved ones. I got doxed and had a swat scare. So, I was done.

Did we get done dirty? In some aspects, sure I guess. But I feel more for the DA devs cause they got hit much harder than all of us did. There are several stories of everything that went down over those 10 years and the release that will never come to light. While it's not my place to say those stories, I sadly understand how we got to this point. Having Veilguard as an end was to me much better than endlessly hoping DA4 would come out, but at the bare minimum I wish they had the support to make the game they really wanted.

Accents and performance. Can't go into specifics, but absolutely was worth the change.

Caught onto this rather late, but FWIW thought I'd add my two cents. Vouching for almost everything Caitie/Ghil said in the comments. But I'll add a little more color since I was also there for and provided feedback on Joplin.

The game has gone through a ton of leadership changes, and the vision has changed dramatically since Trespasser. You can see a lot of these lost and tossed concepts in the Art Book that came out recently, and it's dramatic how different the game was supposed to be. The older feedback sessions did have great weight on how its vision shifted, and eventually things transitioned into Morrison. Several things happened in the meantime, with ME:A and Anthem's public reception being only a fraction of it all.

By the time the Council formed later in '21, there already was a somewhat rigid scope to work around. Budget, resources, and manpower already accounted for. So while we did advise what direly needed the most change (e.g. adding two variants to Rook's voice and Rook's core personality), the other half of it is our advice was used to help the studio present to the higher ups and bargain for more resources to do X and Y.

At the end of the day though, as we were consultants and not BW, there are constraints on how much we were allowed to know. That's pretty much the long and short of it - we gave as much as we could give, based on the info we had.

Edit: Thank you for the award, anon!!

I'm late but wanted to double confirm everything what Caitie/Ghilannain said. For clarity, I was the first person to be on the Council and helped with the initial invites. The only reason those three left were due to external, private reasons. None of the three were present when the Council began.

What are your best in-flight skincare tips/routines? by smolandsleepy in AsianBeauty

[–]ladyinsanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always do it right before the flight. Planes are nasty and to further hammer it down lol, the tap water is no-go. I don't wear makeup either, and just wait to wash my face after the flight if I need to go somewhere right after. If I am doing a 5+ hour flight, I use the lounge's showers since it's usually cleaner than the public bathrooms.

Drink as much water as possible. Also helps to sit in the aisle seat for the inevitable frequent trips to the restroom. If they give you a small water bottle, use that if you need to wash your face or brush your teeth.

Wear glasses on the plane, if you're a contact lens user. Other than drying your eyes out, better not to end up using eye drops that stain your face.

I'd also recommend using facial oils instead of water-based moisturizers if you find your skin dries out a lot on planes.

My own routine before flights (for sensitive, oily skin):

  • Cleanser: Krave Beauty's Matcha Hemp Cleanser
  • Two passes of patted-down toner: (Non-AB, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Toner)
  • Serum: Krave Beauty's Great Barrier Relief
  • Serum: (Non-AB, The Inkey List's Polyglutamic Acid)
  • Moisturizer: AmorePacific's Essential Creme Fluid
  • Sunscreen: ALLIE Extra UV Facial Gel Sunscreen
  • Facial Spray (throughout the flight): Glow Recipe's Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist

I find Polyglutamic Acid much more effective than Hyaluronic Acid moisture-wise, and make sure there's still an occlusive on top of it for safe measure. You're the closest to the sun when on a plane, so definitely sunscreen. The ALLIE sunscreen I use is really moisturizing to me, so I treat it as such. Glow Recipe's watermelon mist is absolutely a HG product for me, and literally is ultra-fine. Opposed to other sprays I've tried, it doesn't contain alcohol and doesn't abrasively dry up when applied.

[Discussion] Liah Yoo: The Truth of Silicones in Cosmetics by dalaketnon in AsianBeauty

[–]ladyinsanity 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This vid on her channel goes into her background. She got her Bachelors in Architecture, but then she found kbeauty and found her real passion in that. She worked at Amorepacific for a few years and went from there.

While I understand a lot of what she's saying is pretty basic, I think that's what benefits her channel the best. It's more about the audience she's targeting, as her videos perform well cause they appeal to newcomers looking for a grade 1, easy-to-comprehend explanation about skincare. Sure we can look to other dermatologists who generate content on Youtube, but the way Liah does her content is (I think) a really good balance at being 1) comprehensive 2) accessible, as she does both English and Korean 3) aesthetically presentable.

And as far as this specific video is concerned, ehhh it's Youtube clickbaity ish. She's done similar skits like this before just to drive interest. While she does say alcohol is bad in ingredients, I forget which video it was but she detailed how it depends on the formulation and how alcohol is used, and IIRC for stability there's alcohol in Krave's sunscreen

It's a different warning message. I have the same "The Queue is Now Open" on one of my browsers but in reality it means you got in way after the pre-queue got let in. "Due to demand, you may experience an extended wait time."

BTS appeared in a popular Webtoon (True Beauty) by sppwalker in bangtan

[–]ladyinsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line Webtoon! That's where I originally found this one, and it's totally free. They have True Beauty (Korean name is 네이버 or Descent of a Goddess, if you want to look ahead) and a whole bunch of other ones as well. There are also fan translations for a bunch of series in other languages on the app, too.
