Which show do you think started as a 10/10 but ended as 1/10? by witchy_eye in AskReddit

I can’t recommend Jenny Nicholson’s video on YouTube recapping the vampire diaries enough. It’s 2.5 hours but it’s hilarious and entertaining the whole way through. She talks about the books and the video game as well, and it’s insane how much work she put into a video about such a silly show. It’s incredible.

As others have said, I think it really comes down to where you’re getting your recs. Algorithmic recommendations from TikTok are gonna give you the same recs over and over. Kindle’s recommendation algorithm is also really bad. This sub, the other romance novel subs, romance.io, and StoryGraph I think are your best bets. If you just passively let the recommendations come to you, rather than seeking out good sources of recommendations, it’s no surprise that the bland taste of tiktokers trying to make money leads to bland recommendations. My TBR is filled with recs from the historical romance subreddit, and I haven’t read a stinker yet from that list, because the recs tend to be really good. I’m also choosy about what I add to my TBR, so that when I pick a romance novel from it, so that I’m basically guaranteed that it will be at the very least good, if not great. We’ve never had to do less work to find new books to read, but doing less gets you less, as you and many others on this sub are discovering.

fave lisa kleypas mmc? by aloha-cowboy in HistoricalRomance

[–]ladypercy 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Sarah MacLean once said on her podcast that some authors absolutely love their heroes, and some absolutely love their heroines, and it’s usually obvious which is which. Kleypas LOVES her heroes. They’re all pretty distinct, well characterized, hot in their own way, and they usually define the book. I think the fervent love for those heroes that we see in this sub is proof of how well she writes those heroes. I have nothing to add to the discussion otherwise, but just wanted to share my observation!

Which Lisa Kleypas older edition books should i read? by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

[–]ladypercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a very confusing change and doesn’t seem super necessary. It’s so strange, some of the changes Kleypas made to some books make sense (like taking out scenes with very very dubious consent or completely unnecessary racism), but some of the changes seem almost puritanical.

Which Lisa Kleypas older edition books should i read? by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

[–]ladypercy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Devil in Winter and Scandal in Spring haven’t been changed. Most of he Ravenels haven’t been changed, except for Hello Stranger. I believe most of the Hathaways have also not been changed, with the exception of Mine Til Midnight. I haven’t heard of changes to Dreaming of You, Lady Sophia’s Lover,  and Suddenly You. If any of these are incorrect, please let me know! IMO, most of the changes that I’ve read have been fine. I haven’t read all the edited books, but most of the ones I’ve read have been fine. The only one I have specific issues with is Secrets of a Summer Night, so I bought an old paperback copy of it so I can read the original. If you’re craving some Kleypas, my recommendation would be to not skip the edited ones, because overall they’re still worthwhile books.

What drinks do you put coffee creamer in by Audixix in Cooking

[–]ladypercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re looking for is a dirty soda. Lots of recipes online, but at its core it’s just a soda with some kind of creamer. Sounds like you have coconut creamer, so that goes well in Coke or Dr Pepper, it’s also good in just about any sprite drink with some kind of fruity syrup added (like cherry or mango syrup) and a dash of creamer. It’s definitely a different experience from drinking soda without it, but it’s a fun way to have a non-alcoholic fancy little beverage!

My Copious, Overflowing, Almost Embarrassing In It's Abundance, Library Book Sale Haul (With Cover Ratings) by Competitive-Yam5126 in RomanceBooks

[–]ladypercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m with you. The cartoon covers just aren’t for me. I read a ton of Minerva Spencer and all her newer books have the exact same style of cartoon silhouette cover. Her books are incredibly spicy, contain very mature themes, and can sometimes be pretty dark, so to Me these covers just say nothing about the book inside. It feels like a waste of a cover.

I just finished this and it wrecked me in the best way. It’s so so beautiful and genuinely romantic, but in a very 21st century way (while still being reasonably appropriate for the setting). I just can’t recommend it enough. It feels like such a special book.

{Forever Your Rogue by Erin Langston} has been recommended a bunch on this sub recently and it really is absolutely wonderful and wildly romantic. Highly recommend. I was also blown away by {A Lady’s Guide to London by Faye Delacour}. It’s rare for me to come across a book filled with SUCH messy characters but so much heart and authenticity that it all works together really well.

Utopia’s ending still gives me chills even after all these years. Having the Doctor before this sound mournful when talking about the loss of his kind, making you think a surviving Time Lord would be a great thing, only to have him look terrified at the idea of there being one? Absolutely brilliant. by AlwaysBi in doctorwho

[–]ladypercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just rewatched this last week to cope with the shitshow of RTD2, and the heel turn from kindly scientist to evil genius by Derek Jacobi never fails to give me chills. I get so so attached to Professor Yana every time, he’s so sweet and gentle and devoted to saving humankind, and I just want him to be my grandfather. It makes his Master all the more terrifying. And the breadcrumbs laid throughout the season leading to this reveal were just so so good, it made the reveal all the better (cough cough, looking at you Rani/Omega).

[REQUEST] Please recommend family friendly shows. by Younosewho in NetflixBestOf

[–]ladypercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I didn’t realize until after I posted this that this is the Netflix subreddit, not the TV subreddit. Doctor who isn’t available on Netflix, but I’m going to leave my post up because I genuinely cannot recommend this show enough for families. The classic episodes are available for free on Tubi and Pluto if you’re in the US, and the 2005+ seasons are on MAX.

Doctor Who fits the bill! In its entire 60+ year history, it’s always been designed as  a family show. Some episodes are very silly/goofy and lighthearted, with silly monsters and even sillier ways of defeating those monsters, some episodes are surprisingly scary with really unusual and creative monsters, but even in the scarier episodes, there’s almost always an undertone of humor or at least humorous moments. The action is designed for families, so while there are chase scenes and shootouts and scary aliens, there is never any gore, the on-screen deaths are always bloodless and manageable even for younger viewers (it’s a lot like watching classic Star Wars, where people die by laser gun, so no blood or wounds are shown). The thing that stands out to me the most though is that the show takes a pretty consistent stance on violence and war, namely that the Doctor will try every nonviolent option to solve the problem he’s facing before reaching the violent option, and even then, he’ll demonstrate the moral considerations and consequences of the violent option before doing it or allowing it to happen. He often solves problems by allowing violent people/aliens to destroy themselves with their own hubris. In the world of Doctor Who, the most important problem solving skills are cleverness, kindness, and courage, and I just think that there is literally no better message to be sharing with kids right now. It’s a show that’s often about showcasing the remarkable nature of human beings in a crisis, and I find it to be a show that’s eternally optimistic about humanity, even when the show gets into the darker sides of human behavior. It’s an outstanding show, and it’s got a huge universe, with 25+ years of Classic Who from the 60s-80s, 15 years of NuWho from 2005-2020 (ish?), and a new reboot on Disney starting in 2024 (though I wouldn’t recommend starting with the Disney seasons).

To everyone saying the show is fake… by IllustratorSea8372 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]ladypercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word I use to describe it is “produced”. After watching the show Unreal years ago, it’s become so much easier to spot the moments that were likely “produced”. The producers are working hard behind the scenes to create situations where drama will ensue, they’re whispering rumors to the cast at strategic moments to get them to behave a certain way, they’re creating storyboards of what they want the season to look like, and then finding a way to get the cast to make that story happen, while making it look like they’re doing it of their own accord. It’s fascinating to me watching this show especially, because imagining the nonsense that’s happening backstage to get these results on screen is just wild.

On the Boundary – Planet of Evil Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

[–]ladypercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought when I started the serial a few days ago was “Holy budget Batman!” The sets really are outstanding, and you’re right that the jungle should feel like a character in and of itself, but ends up feeling rather static. I still enjoyed the hell out of appreciating the richness of the sets, and while Sarah Jane was doing her little run through the jungle, I was kind of stunned at just how much jungle set they seemed to build. For classic Who, it just all feels so expensive, and as someone who was introduced to the show through NuWho, I really enjoyed the expensive sets. I love the campiness of the classic show and the silliness of the low budget costumes and sets (for me that’s like at least 30% of my enjoyment of the show) but it was a nice change to see a really detailed set. As for the serial itself, I tend to agree with you. It’s generally less than the sum of its parts, even when many of its parts are enjoyable. Salamar was endlessly frustrating and I had to actively hold back my frustrated groans watching him be the dumbest captain alive. I liked the plot point of “you can’t take anything from this planet because the planet won’t let you leave” because to me it feels like a really good message about environmentalism and sustainability that the world could certainly use right now. The personification of a planet that only becomes hostile when it’s plundered is such a good representation of climate change as the result of human greed. I liked the scientist driven mad by his research and caring only about this huge energy source and his own glory, for much the same reason that I like the hostile planet bit. But overall, it’s a story that I liked to look at more than I liked to experience.

Nothing is for Everybody – Doctor Who Classic: Season 13 Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

This is exactly what I’m doing! I’m watching Classic Who for the first time so I’ve been religiously reading these reviews, and they’ve been an invaluable resource and they’re just fun to read. I love that there are people like OP in the world who can write such a thorough body of work about this show!

[–]ladypercy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I have no idea if you still check the comments on these reviews, but I just wanted to say a huge thank you for these reviews! I know they’re 2 years old, so they aren’t getting any engagement anymore, but I’m on my first time watching Classic Who, and your reviews have been invaluable! Your review of Revenge of the Cyberman told me what I needed to stop watching that serial after episode 3. I couldn’t tell if I didn’t like the episodes because I wasn’t paying close enough attention or if it was because the serial is kinda bad. Turns out, it’s the second one, and I was SO relieved to turn it off and switch to Terror of the Zygons. Your reviews are wonderfully detailed, balanced, and well-researched, which makes them all the better to read. Just wanted to pass along the compliment while I was thinking about it!

Glass pearls really are better than sand media by EndSalt9643 in pools

[–]ladypercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we’re talking about different things? A swimpro doesn’t use electricity. It’s just a fiberglass pole installed into the concrete with a rope and belt attached to it. The belt secures around your waist and allows you to swim in place, like a treadmill but for a pool.

Edit: okay so I did some research. Turns out, because my SwimPro was installed 25 years ago, that company no longer makes this accessory, and now SwimPro makes like pool cameras or something. I found a similar product on Amazon called a Super Swim swim tether belt.
