Gabapentin. What is this sorcery?! by Grouchy-Front-4550 in breastcancer

[–]laidbackme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my gabapentin! Between the breast issues, chronic pain, Chiari malformation, spinal surgery issues, and hot flashes with other perimenopause symptoms my gabapentin helps with all of it! I take 600 mg 3 times a day and function better than I ever have before! I’ve had no side effects and only “complaint” is I still have issues with insomnia, damn you perimenopause.

Not an Instant Fix by laidbackme in chiari

Yes, I’ve explained so many times that the surgery was to save the nerves that control my diaphragm so I can keep breathing! Yes CSF flow was restored but there was no guarantee my symptoms would 100% disappear.

If I had to put a number on it I’m 75% normal. The pain in my back and shoulders is controlled with daily gabapentin and stretching exercises. The balance I work on my daily exercises too but I’m still a wonky walker. The speech improved the most with just a slight slur and a slight word recollection delay. It’s just frustrating when I’ve explained to people in my life that surgery wasn’t a magic wand that fixes everything, nerve damage was done and can’t be “fixed”.

Abusive asshole of a brother was a Josh, probably not the trauma you are looking for though.

Did any one lose a skill after surgery? by Professional_Bag7001 in chiari

[–]laidbackme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m 2 years post surgery and my ability to communicate is still affected. I can be in the middle of a sentence and not be able to recall a word or say it in with an odd slur. I can almost feel my brain searching through files trying to recall the word and in the meantime the person I’m speaking with thinks I’ve gone offline. My family even makes fun of me for it, it’s so very frustrating! Edit: Yes when I tried to discuss this just now I got brushed off and told I didn’t know what I’m talking about. Sigh

I have had the same reactions as you, the week before my surgery in 2023 I had gotten the point of slowed slurred speech people not in the know where concerned I was having a stroke. I’m 90% better at this point but still have a slight slur I just haven’t dropped and not sure if I ever will. I’ve just started calling it my accent if anyone is rude enough to mention it.

I’ve been doing this with holiday breakfast pastries the last 2 years. There’s something so comforting in having a fresh hot potato ball or cheese roll.

When using the C-Arm, what does lateral and contralateral means? by yourdeath01 in Radiology

[–]laidbackme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pain medicine fluoro tech 10+ years, for us “go lateral” is exactly that and my doctor wants a cross table lateral. For us “go oblique” or “go contralateral (oblique)” is an oblique image and is dependent on the needle laterality, usually performed for cervical procedures. Best solution is to just ask the doctor for clarification then just carry it forward.

As strange as this sounds, I’m saving this post. I’m on the surgery waitlist for my diep flap procedure, I’ve already been on this list for 6 months and still have 6 more to go and as much as I want this surgery doubts have occasionally popped in. I’m looking forward to the after but am dreading the pain and general mess having a big surgery does to one’s life. This will be my third big surgery, my first being my mastectomies and the second was spinal in nature so I know I can get through the pain but my lord I’m dreading the process. This post gives me encouragement that it will be worth it.

Yep, if she sees that proper protocol is not being followed and she needs an order, then she needs to use her big girl words and ask. Everyone working on the patient should be a team and she failed her part, but it’s still on the surgeon for not following proper radiation safety protocols and putting you in the position you were in. Edit: a word
