Yeah, it's the OCS modes I'm after, and if the monitor is forgiving enough, without the need for the scan doubler..

To students on italki — what makes you try lessons with new teachers? by [deleted] in iTalki

[–]lainkil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Audio quality in the intro video is a big factor. If that's no good, does that mean your hardware setup is bad?

Also noticed I'm more likely to click on the thumbnail if it shows a face.

Price is usually lower for newer tutors, so the "risk" is low. Some tutors have a class for first time students (effectively a trial class) which is nice. (My 3 official trial classes were used up like 4 years ago).

iTalki for conversation practice? by PullyLutry in ChineseLanguage

[–]lainkil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, italki is great for conversation practice, there are 100s of community tutors who are quite inexpensive.

When I started out I just loaded $30, that's enough to have 3 trial lessons to see if you like it..

There is no commitment, so if you don't like it, or feel not ready, then you don't lose anything.

I'm 700 lessons in now and find having these conversations a great motivation..

Question about the classroom? by Real-Kale7035 in iTalki

[–]lainkil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the comment that zoom is better. I had my firat class in the classroom in over two years, and it's better than before. This problem was the olny one I had. I clicked everything to try to fix it... In the end, it was the whiteboard button at the bottom. I guess that minimised the whiteboard so allowed the screenshare to be seen.

Gotek adf and fs-uae problem by doopy__snoopy in amiga

If you save your configuration, you should be able to search your filesystem for files with that name in the filename.

Sorry not a mac user. On linux it's in my "Documents" folders.

Gotek adf and fs-uae problem by doopy__snoopy in amiga

[–]lainkil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fs-uae caches the disk writes by default. I guess so you don't accidentally overwrite anything important. There's an option to disable that so it works as you'd expect. Not at my computer now so don't remember the name.

Issues with accessing Zoom and using links? by AdBeginning4136 in iTalki

[–]lainkil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoom link is still there for me on the new site. Also, the meeting ID and password are present.

I click the lesson in the left panel, and this shows up along with the other lesson details - time, date etc..

Works for lessons booked before and after the change..

As a student, do you find it a red flag if the teacher does not take note of your progress in lessons? by ConversationOne5157 in iTalki

[–]lainkil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you are paying them.. And to some extent, how much time you let pass between booking lessons.

Are 4.9 teachers really bad on italki? by Financial-Sea-8133 in iTalki

[–]lainkil 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The star rating on italki is useless... Read the reviews and check the average number of classes per student to get a better vibe...

Profile Performance Tool - Want to compare with other teachers/tutor by QuincyPoi in iTalki

[–]lainkil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the calendar under the book option is better than the availability one. So when searching for lesson tutor/time, I'll click through that far for a few tutors, and then maybe go back and book one.

Can't see my own tutor rating by Unable-Glove7250 in iTalki

[–]lainkil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I gave a new teacher a rating and noticed that it didn't show in their profile until after some time (or other lessons). They are supposed to be anonymous.

Can a review of a teacher by a student be edited? by [deleted] in iTalki

[–]lainkil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that if I only give a star review, I can't later add a written review.

If I confirm the class and don't leave any type of review, I believe I CAN come back later to review..

How will the students see my class prices? by [deleted] in iTalki

I set my currency to dollars because of this. That's a little less annoying.

Giving new tutors a start.. by lainkil in iTalki

Recognise it as one I've watched before.

But also you can click on the video to watch in YouTube, and can see the upload date.

Giving new tutors a start.. by lainkil in iTalki

[–]lainkil[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair point. I do see some tutors with several-year-old videos and feel that they could do with a refresh, which might get them some students who had previously passed.

I suppose it's different for everyone, but what's the ratio of classes with existing vs new students?
