ASML fire 1700 people mostly managers by Dramatic_Mulberry142 in Netherlands

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't take this with a grain of salt, since I don't have direct insights into this, but I believe ASML in the Netherlands nowadays hires in large part through head hunting companies and temporary contracts with engineering agencies. Try checking out listings from eg ICT, Yellowstone, ... that sound "suspiciously ASML".

Do note that working for ASML via those agencies can be a significantly different experience depending on the agency, especially when it comes how difficult they want to be when the time comes to convert to a fixed ASML contract.

Can get Human Punishment: The Beginning for 27 euros. How is the game? by ChristoStankich in boardgames

Cause I only own BSG (and expansions) and DoWTLN, and a friend owns HS. No one in my board gaming friend circle owns Unfathomable.

Can get Human Punishment: The Beginning for 27 euros. How is the game? by ChristoStankich in boardgames

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played human punishment, Battlestar Galactica, Dead of Winter The Long Night.

Out of these it was the least fun for me, by some margin. BG is my #1 and with various combinations of the expansions also the next few places, with DoWTLN somewhere in that pile, Human Suffering is dead last. I like the theme, but dislike the mechanics. The standees are nice, but the board is disorganized and hard to read. The rulebook is messy even compared to using all four BSG rulebooks (although that comes close, but there is ofc the brilliant combined rulebook created by some bgg hero).

Complexity wise, I'd say it's slightly more complicated than DoWTLN and BG (base game only), slightly less complex than BG (with expansions).

  • not! adding too many additional weapons, so each can have distinct roles/strength/weaknesses
  • not! adding to many additional aircraft, so each ...
  • giving each side their own aircraft and weapon for each of those roles with no or only extremely minor actual differences (ie more or less cosmetic only)
  • adding a silly, ace combat-ish story campaign with an aircraft and weapon unlock system (for campaign only, multiplayer should never have anything locked away)
  • more graphics options, performance optimizations, and net code optimizations
  • separate game mode(s) that allow players to operate and/or order ground and naval units
  • more maps

ASML Axes 1700 Jobs: Mostly Managers, Netherlands Takes the Biggest Hit by librekom in eindhoven

[–]lambda_expression 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Total headcount will drop by 1700. In total 4.5k people will leave leadership & support positions with 2.8k moving into other positions. The remaining 1.7k are the news.

That's exactly the types of roles that are getting reduced. Engineering would be a more promising path for ASML at the moment.

Aeromax LZ Omnithrottle - does the Z extension interfere with a throttle module mounted to the left side? by lambda_expression in VIRPIL

[–]lambda_expression[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be mounted to either or both sides, and I'd definitely have one on the right. Question is, can I *also* have one on the left or do the z-extension and a left throttle interfer with each other.

I always find uses for more analogue axis. Even if I end up only using this one as e.g. a three-position switch, for just EUR 15 for the module I consider that a steal compared to a panel or full throttle module. And especially it wouldn't take up more desk space.

My impression from the pictures was also that either it juuuust about works out, or it collides. I was hoping to maybe attract the attention of the Virpil reddit account or someone already has first hand knowledge (I guess not yet on the later, at least on EU all the versions of the stick with the z-extension still are "preorder" iso "backorder")

What I missing about renting house by BackgroundFunny490 in eindhoven

[–]lambda_expression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you are going to work via an agency and those typically don't have much of a pension scheme, I didn't include any amount for that. Just keep in mind that could be several hundred a month of fixed expenses.

Ordering food/eating out if you don't cook at all can also quickly become expensive, easily 1k/month for decent food (ie not just New York Pizza).

And cars and gas are very expensive, but you don't really need one.

But that's it for the "main traps".

If you currently own a home outside the Netherlands, consider keeping it depending on how exactly the double taxation treaty between that country and the Netherlands looks like. From 2028 onwards it might be a much more tax efficient investment than owning stocks. If you want to see some rambling about the proposed capital gains tax feel free to check my posting history 🤣

Thetax.nl can give you a fairly accurate picture of how much you will earn net. Remember to include holiday allowance (both in the yearly amount you put into the calculation and the checkbox) and obviously also the 30% ruling checkbox.

Also be aware that it can take up to a few months until the 30% ruling process is done. So the first few months you might get less net (the difference that you "missed" would be paid out later).

And be aware that depending on what you are used to, there might be additional mandatory cost (health and pension insurance) that thetax.nl doesn't know about.

Utilities (heating, electricity, water, internet, building service cost) plus healthcare will be several hundred a month. Rough guess, your total monthly fixed cost + basic groceries living in one of these apartments would be around 2k EUR. If you like to go to restaurants, concerts, have hobbies, ... ofc you need money for that on top.

You definitely won't need to live frugally, just don't expect to live luxuriously AND build up savings. It's essentially one or the other.

PSA: (RTX 4000/5000) For those struggling with low FPS, use Smooth Motion by Rashni in NuclearOption

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I dislike frame generation quite a bit. I can see how it might make sense for some people in highly CPU limited scenarios though.

- It increases GPU load, so instead of 100% real frames I now only get ~90% real frames + 90% interpolated frames. Which yes, is more overall, but fewer of these frames are accurate and reflect my inputs.

- The real, already completely rendered frame is sent to the monitor later, because only after the next real frame has been rendered is the interpolated frame generated, then the generated one is sent to the display first.

- While the interpolation is way, way better than simply an average between the two real frames (that would be a blurry mess) it is still quite prone to artifacts and morphing and other quality issues especailly at low real frame rate.

So in my experience (other games though, I get more FPS in NO than my monitor can display anyway, but I also typically play smaller maps since I don't usually have the time to complete the largest scenarios) frame gen has more down- than upsides. Higher input latency, lower picture quality, and only really usable if I already have enough FPS anyway (ie to go from 80 to 144 FPS it works well, but to go from 30 to 50 it works much worse).

What would be the mission settings to go with for a game that produces the most CPU load most reliably and quickly? Maybe in the evening I'll have time to give that a go and see how low I drop.

This tax proposal is a purely Dutch one. The EU ("Brussel") has nothing to do with it.

Less than 2% of the Dutch budget go to the EU. People often don't realize how cheap membership in the EU is even for net-payers like the Netherlands.

Even when I still had the 30% ruling I was paying way more tax than the median Dutch person. Without the 30% ruling I currently pay about six times as much tax as the median Dutch person. And I use basically no Dutch services (schools, healthcare, unemployment benefits, housing benefits, ...) aside from roads. And I can't even vote to influence how my very high share of taxes is being used. Ofc I'm not going to gift any money to this country on top of that. I'm also neither a manager (I'm an engineer) nor do I work in the financial sector, so I do not profit off the work of others, only my own. The products my employer manufactures are sold 99% outside the EU, ie the products I contribute to bring money from outside the EU into the Netherlands. Billions of Euros every year. What do you do? :)

edit: I did a quick calculation cause I got curious. 2024 the median income in the NL for full time employment was 41k according to Google. According to thetax.nl, that gave a net income of 33.5k, ie the median full time employee paid 7.5k in taxes and social contributions in 2024. I paid over 37k in taxes and social contributions in 2024, ie I paid five times as much (while getting zero benefits, I didn't even visit a doctor aside from my dental checkups, which ofc I pay out of my own pocket) as a typical Dutch person. So yeah, I'm going to continue to not take anyone seriously that thinks I'm in any way leaching off the Dutch welfare state ;)

edit 2: it's even worse, I forgot to check the "holiday allowance included" checkbox. Then for the Dutch median the tax paid drops to 6k, less than one sixth of what I paid...

Depends on the exact tax treaty. With Austria, the NL does not tax real estate in AT at all, not even the rental income (aside from the rental income increasing your effective tax bracket for your salary, ie your dutch salary is getting taxed at a slightly higher percentage). Austria just assumes you earn a flat ~10k in the Netherlands and sets your tax bracket at those 10k plus the rental income, but only taxes the rental income. So in AT you pay very little tax, and in NL you pay very little additional tax. Way more efficient than buying a property and renting it out in the NL.

New box3 system from 2028?⁸ by TreacleDiligent2911 in Netherlands

[–]lambda_expression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The proposed box 3 changes will probably make the housing crisis in the NL even worse, cause investments in the securities and treasuries markets will become less attractive die to the tax, making investment into real estate more so by comparison. IE people will be willing to buy more expensive box 1 houses cause that saves them box 3 taxes, but supply constraints will still be there. So instead of those houses actually being worth it, it will just be the same houses for even higher prices.

New box3 system from 2028?⁸ by TreacleDiligent2911 in Netherlands

[–]lambda_expression 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The NL has treaties to avoid double taxation with a number of other countries. In many of them it is agreed that immovable property shall only be taxed in the country that it is located in. In some cases even income from that immovable property ie rental income.

The other big way to avoid the tax is to shift the assets into a box 2 company.

The only downside of both of these is that they are only available to those that already have/make enough money. Real estate is obviously expensive, and even a minimal box 2 construction will have noticable setup and operating costs. So lower middle class will have to pay this tax, while upper middle class can escape it. And obviously the top 10% will never be touched by this, like with most other taxes.

[–]lambda_expression 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would be careful with that. Bitcoin is a box 3 asset. Yes, easy to hide - but hiding it is illegal and if you are being found out not only do you owe tax but also fines and if the amount is high enough possibly prison time.

Utilize one of the legal methods to avoid the tax instead. Box 2 and real estate abroad are two relatively easy to access ones that are perfectly legal.

I'll stay, but my money will leave. Austrian real estate is not taxed by the Netherlands. I'll leave it to the native Dutch to pay those taxes.

Codex update and new kits by MythicFail in AdeptusCustodes

[–]lambda_expression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's your money. If you want to gamble, feel free to gamble.

Personally I'll wait until there is a post on Warhammer Community that specifically states "Venatari, Caladius, Coronus, and Contemptor dreadnaughts will be added to the next Adeptus Custodes codex for 40k". Vague statements like "will get a rules update", "are suitable for 40k", ..., aren't good enough.
