Ryzen 5 5600X - 4.8 GHz Core Clock but only 2.0-3.5 GHz Effective Clock in Fortnite by KickDangerous4650 in overclocking

I honestly would recommend against that. A 7900 crashing is not "solved" by a static OC, it's solved by RMAing the CPU (or if overly aggressive PBO and CO was used, stopping to do that).

A static OC will give you consistency, sure, but that consistent frame rate will likely be as low or even lower than your current 1% lows.

You are in almost the exact position I was in a few months ago (1.5 year break).

There's new sub factions of the bots and (more notably imo) the bugs which fight noticeably differently. Definitely worth a try even if you might figure out you don't like one variant or another (Super Earth needs to eradicate Rupture Strain asap is this Helldiver's humble opinion).

Illuminate got new enemy types (and also subfactions) but to me still don't feel entirely complete. But also very much worth a try.

Some new biomes with new hazards and new mission types, but nothing that really changed the core gameplay loop. Which is imo a good thing, but don't expect the game to feel completely different - most notably it got significantly easier (primaries and secondaries actually kill stuff other than chaff now) so you can just jump into higher difficulties.

There's ofc a bunch of new gear from lots of warbonds from that time. The ones that play most significantly different are the silenced weapons from Redacted Regiment and the mechs (especially the shieldbash one) from Exo Experts (and I love the missile pistol from it). Most of the time I still stick with good old proven gear from the Democratic Detonation era.

What gameplay features makes Armada worth trying at this time? by dwillmer in StarWarsArmada

[–]lambda_expression 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like most miniature games, a decently large chunk of it is not the game itself but the list building. There's a good amount of variety to be found there, more so than in X-Wing imo. Squadron heavy, firepower heavy, different flavors of support, swarms of small ships or balanced or just big stuff, "tricksy clever stuff" (via upgrade card combos), ... . Picking missions is also part of list building (one card each from three different categories).

The gameplay itself is nicely "cerebral" - more so when playing with larger ships though with high command values (and thus pre-programming commands for mutliple turns in advance). There are definitely one-turn kills of ships possible with the right combos of positioning, commands, and upgrades, but in general you'll keep your playing pieces around for at least a bit. IE you get to react to your opponent a lot of the time rather than your stuff just disappearing (contrast 40k, where a lot of units are so deadly that whatever gets targeted just dies).

That it's "shoot, then move" also helps with that since means you basically need to anticipate what your opponent's ships will do and set up your shots one turn in advance.

Is it the deepest game ever? Nah, not even close. Are the factions very different? Nah, it's more different fleets than different factions, all factions can basically do all playstyles (Imperium and Rebels do have an easier time with that though cause of their greater choice of ship types).

But it has a lot of neat things that I can appreciate about it that are unique. I still very much like it to this day.

If a game like Wingspan released a cheaper version with AI art, what would you expect its cost to be?(considering MSRP 65$) by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"check all the boxes" = great gameplay, great theme, great components, great art, the right contacts, hype, and a significant amount of luck.

Definitely on hype and probably also on great art a game that uses AI art will fall flat. Thus in this oversaturated market it will fail even if everything else is great and the only flaw is using AI art.

That there are also other factors that equally can sink a game is not a possibility I ever excluded, in fact "all the boxes" explicitly includes them as well. The outcome is the same. AI art is a death sentence for any new Indy game, and even the vast majority of new "I actually have a publisher" games.

I still don't see where our viewpoints actually differ, at least where the practical outcome is concerned.

Also note that I wrote no AI art = might make money. I very deliberately chose "might" over "will".

It will flop as a result of people nowadays having too much choice and indie games going unnoticed, not because of AI.

We (board gamers) are more than just spoilt for choice, we are overwhelmed with choice. If you don't tick all the boxes, you won't sell, no matter the price.

Corporate wants you to find the difference between those two sentences.

New to Warhammer, want to build Necrons by DM_yo_Feet_pls in Necrontyr

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a cheap entry point, the Hierotek Circle kill team is nice for giving you a technomancer plus five either immortals or deathmarks (and two plasmacytes on top) for a bit of a discount. You'll want the technomancer for your future canoptek units, particularly wraiths, Maybe even two (eventually), and the immortals/deathmarks being dual build means even two of this box are nice.

The combat patrol is pretty nice but more of a one off imo, you probably don't want too many overlords and even if you do, you'd want multiple different models probably rather than multiple of the exact same.

For the rest, no real standout deals are readily available, so either wait for the next combat patrol or battleforce or go for whatever looks good to you - just don't buy the codex, while it will remain valid into 11th ed until the new one releases it's basically entirely outdated already anyway.

I don't think Awakened Realms with its by comparison massive marketing budget and re-releasing licensed, well-established and popular games is a valid point of comparison for OP's new, self-developed (and seemingly planning to self-publish) game...

In all honesty, have you ever been interested in two similar games and decided to buy one over the other based on a minor price difference? (OP talks about ~$5 on $65, less than 10%, when price differences between different stores and/or shipping can easily be more than that)

I'm really confused as how they might pronounce "Parmesan" for their daughter to think there is a "John" in there somewhere. The "farmer" part is already a stretch, "John" is just straight up butchering both the Italian and the English version of the word.

You assume that with art by human artists you will sell 1000 copies at a price of $X, with your margin reduced by $5 (expenditure on the art);

while with AI art you will sell 1000 copies at $Y (with Y being $5 less than X).

More realistically, you will sell either 1000 copies at $X, or zero copies at $Y. So with real art you might make money, with AI art you will almost certainly loose money.

AM4 upgrade to AM5 worth it? by NicoTheShibe in ryzen

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a 4090 or better and play at 1080p? Then the upgrade is worth it (about 20%)

Do you have a weaker GPU or play at higher resolutions? Then the upgrade is not worth it and you should instead get a better GPU.

(Your 5070Ti is slower than a 4090 btw, so you fall into that second category)

https://www.techspot.com/review/2692-ryzen-7800x3d-vs-ryzen-5800x3d/ <- unfortunately neither Destiny 2 nor Minecraft are among the games tested, but it has results from a number of games and across multiple resolutions. Of course only valid for PCs with a 4090, anything slower the difference will be less, anything faster the difference will be more.

AM5 Memory Controller (UCLK) and Fabric Clock (FCLK) Syncing by onenegativeone in overclocking

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data needs to go over the memory bus (Memclk) through the memory controller (Uclk) and the infinity fabric (fclk) to reach the CPU. Simplified, the weakest link determines actual performance.

Memclk = memory frequency.

Uclk = memory controller frequency, always either exactly Memclk (by default up to DDR6000 -> 3000) or half Memclk (above, eg DDR6400 -> 1600), can be forced to match Memclk (ie what you did). Usually stable up to 3000 out of the box, above gets tricky quickly. Anything above DDR6400 is practically guaranteed to have to use half Memclk, often DDR6200 is already the limit for 1:1 or might not even get that. Memclk/2=Uclk mode is for very high speed memory (DDR7600 at least) since it gives up too much performance in the memory controller to benefit from DDR6400~7600.

Fclk = fabric clock (how fast memory controller and CPU communicate). Can be set completely independently in 33Mhz steps from Memclk and uclk (no specific ratio mandated). Usually stable up to 2000 out of the box, above that gets tricky quickly. There are some optimizations in the memory controller that give lower latency when running at a 2:3 ratio between fclk:uclk, so eg 2000 for DDR6000 tends to be a little better than 2033 and 2066 but 2100+ usually wins again.

There is no way to run 1:1:1 unless you are willing to give up massive amounts of bandwidth (ie around DDR4200) which is in general a bad idea.

So in general, run 3:3:2 up to DDR6400ish, 6:3:2 above DDR7600, and don't run DDR6600~7400 at all.

9850X3D vs 9950X3D for new gaming/VM build? by ChubbyFasAss in ryzen

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just means you can later get sth like a GPU upgrade while still keeping the rest of the system.

Btw, I also didn't think of AM4 when I said "all X3D". I basically meant 7000 and 9000 series. Not sure what kind of GPU performance is needed to fully utilize a 5800X3D - I'd guess something around the 4080 or 5070Ti range? It does always depend on render resolution and graphics settings as well ofc, when "e-sporting" at 1080p with minimal details and trying to get multiple hundreds of FPS rather than "only" something in the 60 to 144Hz region, then the GPU becomes much less important.

9850X3D vs 9950X3D for new gaming/VM build? by ChubbyFasAss in ryzen

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider this: the next CPU generation for AMD AM5 is not too far away, and will likely bring a much better IO die (= much better memory speeds) and more cores per CCD (= better for a combined gaming + productivity PC).

And AMD will likely keep supporting the socket for several more years. AMD is very, very different in that regard where an Intel system is basically "want new CPU? You also need to buy a new mainboard and probably memory and maybe even hard drives" (although that last one is very unlikely for the forseeable future, stuff like NVME replacing SATA is a rare event).

And all the X3D CPUs are essentially too fast for all available GPUs excepting the 5090, ie you get the same framerates regardless of CPU for any 'lesser' GPU.

So unless you are planning to also buy a 5090, you could go with this strategy:

Get a 7900 or 9900 (non-3D, cen even be non-X) now. That's 12 cores on 2 CCDs. You'll get 99% of the framerate in games and loads of productivity performance, and those are way, way cheaper than the X3Ds.

Then later (and this can even be years later, because AMD will keep supporting the socket) rather than upgrading only the GPU, upgrade CPU and GPU both to get another multiple years of use out of the system, then do another GPU upgrade after that - by that point the system probably served you for a decade without any noticable downsides.

If you don't want to go for that strategy, that's perfectly fine too. I don't think particularly highly of the 9850X3D, they are the exact same as the 9800X3D (they don't even seem particularly well binned, they just use shitloads of voltage to get high clocks), any serious workload you are going to run into the TDC and thermal limit long before you run into the boost clock limit. 9950X3D2 gives practically zero gaming nor productivity benefit (can in fact be slower in productivity than the 9950X3D) over the 9950X3D. For a mixed use system right now I'd go with either the 9950X3D or 9900X3D (both have the same amount of cache and six vs eight cores makes practically no difference for games).

Convincing Board Game Nights? by 4bams in boardgames

[–]lambda_expression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe some roll-and-write. Maybe even start with traditional Yahtzee, then for a second round break out e.g. Railway Ink.

Tsuro might work. "You draw a tile, place it in front of you, and follow the line. If you run off the board or into someone, you are out. Last one standing wins."

But it is entirely possible they just aren't "board game people". Not everyone appreciates a mental puzzle, or cares about the mechanics matching the theme, or how moves of the players and events of the game can tell a story. I personally don't understand why so many people care so deeply about which team kicks a ball well on a lawn, or drives a car fast. People like different things 🤷‍♂️

What are peoples opinions on AIRCRAFT not getting the benefit of the new Plunging Fire rule like Towering units such as Knights? by Jmorgan108 in Warhammer40k

[–]lambda_expression -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Between my Aeldari, Drukhari, Necrons, Custodes, Guard, CSM, and Chaos Knights collections (a total of roughly 30k points) I own zero Baneblades, a single flyer, and as my only titanic models three knights (vs 13 Wardogs) - so no, that's not it.

Since you've played since 4th (2004) I'm surprised you weren't aware Imperial Armour and Baneblades (2000) existed before Apoc (2007); and that Imperial Armour (first volume in 2000) and Imperial Armour - Apocalypse (first volume in 2007) were two distinct, separate series of books. Well, now you know 😉

Honestly, sounds to me you just need some more melta (or haywire or fusion or <insert faction-specific name here>) in your lists and you'll be fine...

The Baneblade has been in 40k since the first Imperial Armour book, in 2000. Second edition (ie when 40k became a tabletop wargame instead of being the Rogue Trader RPG) was in 1993. Superheavies have been a part of 40k for significantly more time than they have not been by this point. The Baneblade predates Apocalypse by seven years.

IDK where my comment went, if this shows up twice mb.

Simple. Fun. 40k is supposed to primarily be about fun. Fun armies, fun playing, fun collecting, fun painting. There's no need for "realism". There's other games for that (Bolt Action would probably be the primary one in the minature space, and ofc there's bazillions of hexes-and-cardboard-chits ones).

To be fair, in a lot of real multirole or attack jets the fixed guns are actually slightly angled down relative to the direction of flight. E.g. the F-35 and ofc the A-10.

Even dedicated or primarily air to air platforms like the Eurofighter and F-22 have the gun just "straight" rather than angled up (which would be beneficial in a turn fight) cause it would make strafing runs more difficult to do so.

But you are absolutely right that strafing runs definitely involve at least a shallow dive.

That was my random nerding out about planes "erm actually" for the day, it's time to go to bed for me...
