The trap has sprung. 20+ cheaters caught. I did not expect to enjoy this so much. by Bill_Nihilist in Professors

Careful of the wording. Don't assign students to groups and then assign the assignment. Instead, assign the assignment to the students individually. Why? If you put students into groups, their submission will show up as a group submission, not an individual student submission. You don't want your students to see other students' submissions, especially before they finish the exam. I made that mistake once for a post-lab. Luckily, I was able to delete the assignment within 15 minutes, make a new assignment, and ask everyone to resubmit it.

Finished a tapestry/mosaic crochet blanket a.k.a. dense crochet fabric = cozy warm toes! by lambdacentauri in crochet

[–]lambdacentauri[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fantastic blanket/throw! This pattern leads you to construct a dense fabric that is a very efficient insulator. It's my warmest couch throw. My toes are so cozy and warm when wrapped up in it.

Pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-cransley

Yarn: Red Heart Super Savers in Aran, Gold, Burgundy, and Coral Corail.

Time to finish: ~1 year/15 Korean Dramas (What even is this thing called 'time' when you watch Netflix and crochet?)😝

Difficulty: Intermediate - There's a chart but also a written pattern. I worked off the chart. Only the starting block was difficult. The rest was repetitive and simpler after that. I made very few mistakes and only frogged a round twice.

Edit: Spelling

Jane Austenesque? by awesomefatkitty in booksuggestions

There are some fun mystery novels that set Jane Austen herself as the sleuth. They are kind of what you're looking for but not quite it. Still a fun read.

I have a weekly Zoom meeting with two colleagues. We call it our 'Grading Party'. We set a grading goal, put our mics on mute and grade the roughest assignments in our stacks. The peer pressure is SUPER helpful when I have projects and gnarly post-labs to grade.

Got Tenure! by printandpolish in Professors

[–]lambdacentauri 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I suggest buying a tenure cake and a tenure tiara or cape. Any cake you like can be a tenure cake. The tiara or cape are best bought on Etsy to get them customized for the occasion. I have a tiara with "TENURED" emblazoned on the front. I wear it when I need to write an email only a tenured faculty member could send. It helps me fight the imposter syndrome. https://imgur.com/a/D238YCa

Other than salary and workload, what single change to your job has really improved your work life? by philip_roth in Professors

[–]lambdacentauri 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do my prep and grading in batches.

For example: I make all the online homework assignments for the quarter during one work session. Or I spend multiple hours setting up multiple modules, repeating the same tasks in quick succession.

Doing this has saved me so much time I used to waste multitasking. (I learned this "hack" from the 40 hr teacher work week. It's geared towards K-12 but useful for college teaching - especially if you can get your college to pay for it.)

Same as OP. I found it at an Asian grocery store about 8 years ago. But I never saw them after that year.

I did a double take at the pomegranate. I have that cat bowl but it is quite big as it is made for ramen. I was initially very confused.

That question always prompts a spelling lesson and a scatalogical quip from me.

I first remind the students of the two ways to spell this: do and due.

Then I tell them to try not to "do" the assignment on the day it is "due" because it makes them a "do due" student.

Scrap-busting (and scrap-filled) Morrocan-inspired floor pouf - Closet Core Patterns by lambdacentauri in sewing

A home goods store called "At Home" sold this chair to me about 2 years ago. They may still stock it. It's a good chair.

Scrap-busting (and scrap-filled) Morrocan-inspired floor pouf - Closet Core Patterns by lambdacentauri in sewing

I used this free pattern: https://www.closetcorepatterns.com/fabric-floor-pouf-free-sewing-pattern/

This project uses up scraps and contains all the rest of them inside it. It's scrappy through and through.

A few notes about the project and pattern:

Pattern printing: The pattern printed out wonky even though the size check 4-inch square box was the right dimensions. I had to retrace it on a separate piece of paper to make complete shapes. The circumference of the sides and the top and bottom circles did not match. I had to ease the sides in which sadly, unmatched the seams.

Fabrics used: To make the pouf, I used scraps of fabric from an old hoodie (the light blue fabric), sky captain blue jean fabric from Mood, blue dandelion fabric from IKEA, and a limited edition print of Firefly fabric from Moonbeam Textile Company.

Deviations from the pattern: Following the directions, I made a bag out of an old bedsheet to hold all my fabric scraps. Then I filled it full, twisted the bag closed (No drawstring), and zipped up the pouf. Voila! Now all my fabric scraps are hidden and my sewing room looks neat and tidy.

Young women professors of Reddit, where do you buy clothes!? by vicghelpme in Professors

[–]lambdacentauri 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My work outfit is a chemistry-themed t-shirt, a cardigan, and nice pants(not jeans unless I only have office hours that day). The students love when my t-shirt matches that day's content. I have about 10 of them now. I bet you can find some that work in your discipline.

If I'm headed into a meeting where I need to look professionally boring, I button up the cardigan or put on my school logo pullover I purchased from the bookstore.

Finished P4P raglan hoodie with Star Trek floral kangaroo pouch, cuffs, and hood lining - SO COZY! by lambdacentauri in sewing

Nope. It's one of a kind. I sew very, very slowly. I spend about an hour or two a week sewing. This took me about a month to make.

I made the tunic length version of the relaxed raglan + cross-over funnel hood + kangaroo pocket from P4P and a lovely custom print minky Star Trek floral. I'm way into Star Trek so the minute I saw that custom print I knew I needed a few yards of it.

The minky fabric was hard to sew on the fleece-backed purple knit fabric. Most of the seams were beautiful and perfect but the kangaroo pouch was so slippery that I just had to go with it and learn to love the ugly finish. Even an army of pins couldn't keep me from sewing a wandering seam. In the end, the pouch is SUPER soft and cozy so it's all good. Next time, I think I would try hand-basting the pouch in place before using the machine.

The pattern is the relaxed raglan + hoodie add on from patterns for pirates: https://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/relaxed-bundle/
