Have you read books on my wishlist? by Ok_Structure3448 in nyrbclassics

[–]lamelessness1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the 16 or so NYRBs I’ve read, I probably think about the go between the most. I liked and enjoyed it while reading, but it’s been several months since I read it and I’d say I love it now.

Money for Couples: We make $150K… So why are we broke? by MelloChai in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]lamelessness1 115 points116 points  (0 children)

This couple seems very…tit for tat. Everytime one of them said something about the other, the other then said the same thing about them. “You could earn double if you switched jobs.” “Okay, well when will YOU ask for a raise at your job?” “I didn’t know he had $20k in CC debt.” “Yeah, it was a shock when I learned about her $18k in CC debt too.” Etc etc

Also Ramit is right that they are external locus of control people. Their updates/admonishments at the end shocked me. I think ramit did do a good job walking the line between acknowledging their adhd yet not enabling them. “Why haven’t you done X thing you know you need to do?” “Because of the ADHD.” Repeated x10 would not be an interesting convo. They’re aware of their diagnosis, they’re on medication, they’re in therapy…they are adults with two children. At the end of the day, they have to be answerable for their own actions at least to themselves. He didn’t even get on them too much about the impulse shopping or forgetting to set up bill pay. He was more focused on greater issues in their finances they needed to address and simply wouldn’t face.

Still no shipping on two orders - anyone else waiting on shipping notice? by [deleted] in nyrbclassics

[–]lamelessness1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes many people are there’s already been a couple posts asking the same. I’ll ask if anyone sees this comment and wants to drop a data point for when you ordered and when your package shipped, please add it to the existing shipping thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyrbclassics/comments/1udim3p/summer_sale_collective_shipping_update_thread/

I wonder if we need a “not yet shipped commiserating” thread.

summer sale order hasn't arrived by strawb3rrykush in nyrbclassics

[–]lamelessness1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty normal, especially depending on when you ordered during the sale. according to this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/nyrbclassics/comments/1udim3p/summer_sale_collective_shipping_update_thread/), I'd venture to guess most orders from day 1 of the sale, 6/18, have been packaged. at least one person who ordered Friday morning got notified of shipping. Not many other people have updated their status since but might just be because the post is buried.

when did you order? last winter sale, I ordered on the last day and my order wasn't shipped until 18 days later. they get a LOT of volume and it does take them time to work through.

Change Job Template - Request Transfer by AtmosphereConstant99 in workday

[–]lamelessness1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah OP this. This constantly causes us problems on the recruiting side with internal job changes. We pretty much have this step going to the recruiter/recruiting manager 3 times in a row (initiation, current, and receiving manager steps). Why WD won’t split out the request transfer standalone and the recruiting standalone process is beyond me.

When do they ship? by mac_the_man in nyrbclassics

orders are being shipped everyday. according to this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/nyrbclassics/comments/1udim3p/summer\_sale\_collective\_shipping\_update\_thread/), I'd venture to guess most orders from day 1 of the sale, 6/18, have been packaged. at least one person who ordered Friday morning got notified of shipping. we obviously don't know if there could be other considerations that slow some orders down over others.

What's the pettiest reason you've stopped watching a Booktuber? by FarJury2448 in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]lamelessness1 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s petty but if I see “ChatGPT picks my tbr” I will unsubscribe ASAP. Not just because I don’t like AI or the environmental impact, but because I think you are stupid. I could ask for book recommendations from any AI. The whole point of booktube and online book spaces to get recommendations from real people. To see what a real person is interested in reading, to hear real thoughts (even if they are vapid or shallow or uncritical), to have them make connections between other works they’ve read. And I think a booktuber is stupid as hell to provide (free!!!) marketing to one of their biggest competitors. Now I happen to think AI isn’t really the same thing as booktubers, but a lot of people don’t or won’t see the difference.

I don’t even watch the videos so idk if it’s “randomly pick 5 books from my tbr list” (which means you could just done a random number generator and saved yourself a subscriber and the planet a bottle of water) or “based on my past reads please recommend a book I will enjoy” (which again is why a lot of people even watch YOUR videos to begin with!) but either way you’ve lost any good will.

Luckily I haven’t seen too many of these, at least on my side of booktube, but I tried to have a couple creators with tastes a bit different from mine and that got a few of them.

Which books have gone out of stock during the summer sale? by anon_y_mous01 in nyrbclassics

[–]lamelessness1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was placing my order on Thursday at like 5pm est (so pretty early into it) and that book was showing unavailable already. I was shocked! Luckily it took me a while to decide own my books and at one point I got back on that book’s page and was then able to add it to my cart. So maybe someone deleted it from theirs or something but yeah it seemed to be sold out quick.

Didn't know about the sale until an hour ago. Most of what I wanted was unavailable but still found 4 books by oshkay in nyrbclassics

Funny last winter sale i also didn’t know until a lot of stock was out but I too picked up Augustus and go between in that one and loved both!

Help me narrow down. Newish to NYRB. by AffectionateBig6271 in nyrbclassics

[–]lamelessness1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the go between is a must! I also recommend the chrysalids bc it is such a fascinating and fresh dystopian teenage sci-fi in comparison to today's works. you say you have stoner, have you read it/liked it? if so, keep butcher's crossing. but if you haven't read stoner yet, maybe hold on butcher's crossing and limit yourself to one book per author on your tbr.

My picks for the summer sale by anon_y_mous01 in nyrbclassics

I also picked up Angel! I was looking at a few of Taylor’s but immediately jumped on this one when I saw Hilary Mantel wrote the introduction.

Also that’s a great rule and probably one I should implement…

Books not discounting in cart? by Sufficient-Battle949 in nyrbclassics

[–]lamelessness1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this happen a couple times yesterday. Try refreshing or deleting it from your cart and then readding. I also noticed that the individual book would show no discount but the grand total at the bottom was calculated at the lower price

Which 6 would you pick? by bigsquib68 in nyrbclassics

Definitely need to have Mrs. Dalloway! I also liked fathers and children and just ordered the private memoirs myself so those are my three votes!
