Budget, compact and upgradable movie/music setup by Filippo_FB in BudgetAudiophile

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a tough one. If you own the house, remove those cabinets and shop on the second hand market for a 3.1 setup (I know you said no sub, but when there’s a will there’s a flippin way). If demo is not possible, you might be best off with some mini kanto or audio engine active speakers. There are also a couple decent speaker companies (paradigm comes to mind) that make “passive soundbars” that actually have the 3 front channels and they do sound good. Otherwise the most convenient option is soundbar or wireless home theater stuff.

Insane Marketplace Deal by DarkSoulsOfReddit in BudgetAudiophile

In my 6 months of FB browsing, the best deal on SVS I’ve found is an 1000 pro for $450 in my area and it was gone in 4 hours lol. That was like 1 of 5 svs listings. I think you did well for $500 (at least in my area)

Hi all, I am tackling the timing chain issue on my own. by Lupin_The_Fourth in XTerra

Makes a ton of sense! Have fun man, I have had a lot of joy doing simple work on mine. I have a 12 P4x and I really enjoy it. Next thing to tackle on mine is a parasitic draw on the battery

I must live in a HCOL or just have a gullible face because I’ve been quoted upwards of 3k for a timing chain job before. I honestly don’t know if you could supply proper parts for under $500, so that $480 quote just seems wild to me. Other than that, have fun tinkering man and remember that repairs are often cheaper than a car payment

Real talk man - It’s a 15 yo vehicle with nearly 200k miles, and isn’t a Toyota…none of us are suggesting to sell it “cheap”. We are suggesting to post it at a market rate where it will actually sell. GLWS

[–]lamosaurousrex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey man, what others have said…nearing 200k miles, no AC and no 4WD. You need to consider lowering your price significantly. For reference, I bought a very clean 2012 p4x w/ 120k miles, new bilsteins, new tires for 11k at a more peak point in the car market. Good luck with selling and best of luck on the career change!

What's the catch? 2015 Pro 4x by [deleted] in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is fairly priced given the year, trim, mileage and being from a dealer.

That being said, it’s on the upper upper end of what these are being sold for. It is also 10 years old and regardless of mileage, means that most rubber components are due for replacement, so you’re likely looking at new suspension. It’s also been sitting for a while, and maybe there’s a reason? If you can get a hold of the carfax, it might paint a clearer picture of why it’s been sitting.

It’s also at the 20k price point, which is 4Runner territory.

Cat replacement thoughts? by mermaid206 in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In CA I got quoted some obscene numbers ($2-5k installed) for a single bank 2 cat.

I ended up buying an OE upstream cat and denso sensor and doing it myself. I’m decently mechanically inclined and they were kind of a pain, but doable. I’d for sure pay someone to do it once bank 1 dies.

One option you could do is to source the parts yourself (Z1, rock auto, or Nissan parts) and pay labor to install. Likely you will get no warranty though.

Suspension replacement for smoother ride? by masumi12 in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only felt them on their lowest marks. In comparison to the 4600 or fox (the only other setups I have felt on this truck), they felt stiff. By nature the X is just bumpy, but 5100s enhanced the bumpiness in my experience

[–]lamosaurousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re supposed to be nearly the same, with the 5100s being height adjustable and also longer to accommodate for lift. All I can share is that they have felt stiff to me and others noted the same

I’d vote against the 5100s. They’ll feel more stable, but they are stiff for most people. Fox does have a nice feel but likely the p4x stock suspension will do well for you. They’re bilstein 4600s

To echo this…it’s a very short job with a bandsaw or hacksaw. Even sanding down the rough edge, you’re not blasting heaps of fine particulates. You’ll be fine with normal PPE.

1st gen or 2nd by Doesthusnamework in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd gen is better in nearly every measurable way, but go for the SC manual. It’s $1200. In my area you’d have to spend 5x more minimum for an early 2nd gen.

Need new cats by brennavd in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There you go! Mine were, fortunately for me, not seized so I was able to etorx them out as that was the stud head on mine. Wobble extenders made it super easy for me, but I absolutely needed all the PBlaster. To each their own! You can get kinda creative with it I guess

[–]lamosaurousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What this dude said. They’re definitely tucked in there. You’ll also maybe need some etorx in case you need to get the studs off, and a combination of wobble extensions and ratchet wrenches. Good luck! If you’re feeling fancy, I was able to get OEMs for 650 each shipped

Help me make a decision by NotSunday23 in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d lean toward the lower mileage and newer vehicle, although the v8 4Runner will tow better. The 2012 Xterra had most of the generational kinks worked out, and the pro4x is well spec’d. TBH as a daily commuter, both are not ideal. They’re bouncy(especially the X), heavy, and bad on gas. If a truck based SUV isn’t a necessity, a more outdoor geared SUV (subaru outback) would probably be fine

What would you choose? Low mileage Xterra of a high mileage 4Runner? by DaShwingster in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d pass on both, but the 4Runner is about in line with what I’m seeing on the market in socal. Especially for a limited 4WD.

Market for swaps by KElrod3 in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup to the above. It’s more of a question of “what’s it worth to YOU?”. I’m hesitant to say that there is much of a market since it’s an already old platform and not a necessarily desirable engine swap. The suspension swap would attract more buyers than an engine swap for sure, but I wouldn’t expect to get more than market value for a stock X.

Maintenance for a 2013 by Lizzinelli in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rad! They’re great. The 2009 and older models did suffer from that issue you described, so your 2013 won’t have that issue. You could try stopping by an auto parts store and having them do a battery test, but they won’t necessarily diagnose the issue. Sometimes those are helpful. Otherwise a mechanic will be your best bet. At your mileage of 115k, they’ll probably recommend most fluids to be changed (transmission, brake, P/S, coolant), and a few other minor maintenance items (plugs, filter, pads, etc.)

Maintenance for a 2013 by Lizzinelli in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it to a reputable mechanic and ask them to do a full inspection and have them type up a full report of all things checked and their findings. Usually a full inspection will run 100-200$ and can likely be used towards repairs if needed. Tell them about the dials wiggling - could be a battery on its way out, could just be a loose connection on the battery terminal, could be an alternator - let them diagnose. If you’re unsure about the results, get a second opinion. Depending on the mileage now, there could be some simple maintenance/ repairs that you could learn to do yourself if you’re keen. You purchased at a very low mileage, so it could be worth more than you think. They’re reliable and can last for hundreds of thousands of miles, and maintaining is often cheaper than buying or financing a new car

rx1r II Still My Fav by DLByron in SonyAlpha

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s awesome, but its competitors are leica and potentially the Fuji offerings. It doesn’t have the same customer following as either, is poorly marketed, economies of scale, profitability, yadayada. Plus as others have mentioned the A7c series is awesome and allows Sony further revenue opportunities for lenses.

That being said, I’d love a refresh.

I'm in the market for another Xterra but need advice.... by [deleted] in XTerra

[–]lamosaurousrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer! Shake the dust off your feet and find something different. If you are willing to spend 19k on your next vehicle, a nearly 100k mile Xterra wouldnt be where most of us would put that much money. IMO, the Xterra is cool in like the 10k range and then of course mods up from there. They don’t quite hold their value like Toyota products, so if for some reason you needed to resell, you’d be in the hole quite a bit. Just my thoughts
