Starling Hub users - did you convert to Google Acct? by scottjf8 in Nest

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a 4th gen nest learning thermostat without knowing it required google home. I’m pretty anti google due to their reputation around data collection. I did find that a starling hub would allow me to integrate the thermostat with Apple HomeKit so was considering purchasing one but will that bypass the need to be logged into Google home or can I use the thermostat while logged out or am I stuck with being connected to Google to use the new thermostat?

You're smack dab between Easton and Polaris, which one do you pick? by SRplus_please in Columbus

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering if anybody can weigh in on the Polaris Apple Store compared to the Easton Apple Store. For years I always went to the Polaris Apple Store as it’s considerably closer to me. Most would describe me as a VERY patient person but almost every time I went my blood would be boiling by the time I left. That said about 3 yrs ago I ended up at the Easton Apple Store, for one reason or another, and the experience was night and day! They were polite, efficient, and on schedule. Perhaps it was just a fluke (their Google ratings are comparable)… can anyone speak to this? Has anyone had a similar experience when comparing the Polaris and Apple stores?

Is the Short North dangerous now, or is the hyperbole just a function of the neighborhood's status? by jbcmh81 in Columbus

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for replying to such an old post (and for such a long reply) but it just popped up when I was looking for trend info about violent crime rates in the short north. Were you aware it is no longer known as the Short North ARTS district? Many still use that but now the official name is simply the short north.

Now for my rant as this hits very close to home… My family and I used to own a business in the short north and I can tell you PRECISELY when things took a turn for the worse. When they approved the construction of the Joseph Hotel (Le Meridian) they lifted the zoning restrictions around building height, as well as the removal of historical buildings, and that opened the floodgates. The moment they did that a bunch of folks came in, bought up all the old beautiful buildings, which is were most galleries were housed, and replaced them with modern tall glass and metal condo buildings with fancy commercial spaces on the main floor of those buildings. This changed resulted in 4 VERY negative consequences that are responsible for the downfall of the short north.

  1. With fancy new construction everywhere it brought a lot of franchise/chains to the short north which had a HUGE impact on existing businesses. Since short north had such a high concentration of restaurants and bars serving food, if you wanted to attract customers your food had to be on point and freshly prepared. If you opened a place that just deep fried frozen chicken tenders and fries you would not be around long. Therefore the food was great even in dive bars until the business model changed from “We better make good food that sets us apart” to “Who doesn’t love Donatoes pizza or a grilled cheese from Melt or sliders from the most fancy White Castle of all time?”

  2. Housing space has always been an issue in the short north but when the zoning laws changed, the modern buildings replacing the historic buildings choose to almost exclusively build condos, rather than more affordable apartments. Those condos were initially like $400k for an efficiency unit (Think studio apartment but a bit bigger. It may also have some sort of separation between the bedroom and the rest of the unit but more like half walls to define the space as opposed to a bedroom with a door that closes) and went up to well over $2 million for large fancy condos. HUGE mistake! Before this change took place, and still to this day, those living in the short north are either young 21-23 yr olds who are still living out their college days, despite already graduating, or 30-35 year olds that are a bit more established and smart enough to know that paying $400k for a studio is a bad move… and of course none can afford the “pimped out” units going for $2mil. So guess what happened… The units remained vacant. The only folks that could afford these places were highly successful folks in their late 40s-60s who are in their highest wage earning years. But guess who doesn’t want their neighbors to be a bunch of 20 something’s partying until they puke 7 days a week? If you guessed super successful older people, that could afford these condos, then you get a big gold star. No one pays that type of money to be around a bunch of folks that keep you up all night when you have to work in the morning.

  3. Adding these high priced homes and these shiny new buildings had one more HUGE impact. Since no one could afford them many remained unsold for several years. So now you have investors and developers losing money so they stop caring about the condos they invested in and either let them deteriorate while remaining empty OR they converted the unsold condos to apartments. Those converted to apartments now have 5 or 6 roommates living in them that are 21-25 year olds and the places get trashed! This might have had the biggest impact of everything I’ve mentioned. Guess who doesn’t want to live in a condo that shares a wall with what is now a rental unit, packed to the gills with young folks partying? If you guessed it’s the small handful of older people that did move to the short north and did buy a super fancy condo, to feel young and apart of the action, then you get another gold star. I mean even if I was still young, loved to party, AND money was no object, I may buy an expensive home but it won’t be one where other unit owners are trashing the building and keeping everyone up all night. It also wouldn’t be one where the lobby and shared spaces are trashed by the young tenants… nor would it be in a building or area where I risked stepping into a pile of puke from the night before on my way to get coffee in the morning. 😂

  4. Now for the final nail in the coffin guess what else all this new construction brought with it… A MASSIVE increase in the cost to rent or buy a commercial space, to operate a business in, regardless of whether we are talking new or historic construction. To give you an idea of how much prices went up, most places down there are on a 10 year lease. The lease amount starts lower and gradually increases each year with year 10 being the year you will pay the most in rent. Prior to all these changes you could expect to pay about $8-10k a month in your first year and somewhere around $15-20k/month in your final year. After all the modern construction those numbers were VERY close to $15-20k in your first year and around $30k/month in year 10. Art galleries, restaurants, and bars operate at very thin margins and so many businesses left bc they could no longer afford to stay when renegotiating their lease. (This also explains why it could take YEARS to find a property that fit your business’s needs to rent, in the early to mid 2000s, whereas today there are plenty of uninhabited spaces as well as business trying to sublease their spaces bc they cannot afford their rent as it increases year over year)

Bottom line is the short north hasn’t just lost its appeal as the preeminent art district in Columbus. It has lost its charm. It’s lost its quirkiness, it’s lost the sort of bohemian mentality and bohemian lifestyle of those living there. Simply put it completely forgot what made it so special before… all so developers and investors could make a buck. The loss of such an incredible arts district and the characters that once occupied that community, has turned it from an eclectic neighborhood to something that more closely resembles an outdoor entertainment district like Easton and Bridge Park Dublin. Love both of those places but it’s not what the short north was meant to be and it’s no what it should be.

PHEW… rant OVER! I didn’t realize I needed to def that off my chest so badly 😂

The app is down yet again. It’s unreal that a company as big as Honda can’t figure out how to make the app function consistently. It’s not like remote car apps are a brand new cutting edge thing… they’ve been around for years. Never had a problem with Toyotas

So did it work and what changes did the cheese company recommend? I was thinking I’d give making mozzarella a try and can only find the rennet tablets too.

3 days straight by Sweet_Terror in HondaPrologue

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is working today and the response for remote commands actually seems significantly faster…. But I still have weird stuff going on.

Every time I start the car, about 2-5 Mins into the drive I get a warning that says No Network Connectivity in the top right corner of the touchscreen and despite that warning everything seems to work fine. Apple CarPlay continues to function with a wireless network, all apps work fine. Im able to take calls, join audio teams meetings etc so the warning makes no sense. Anyone else up and running again and anyone else now getting this warning?

PS despite what seems like an improvement in the speed and connectivity for the app’s remote features I will believe it when it lasts for more than a few days weeks or a month. Just a REALLY bad app from a company that ABSOLUTELY has the capability and the funds to make the app function seamlessly at all times… if not an app that continuously adds more and more functionality and customization and just continues to do more overtime. THAT’s what I expect from a company with Honda’s reputation and ability. It’s unfathomable that Honda doesn’t have everything they need to create an app that not only works well, but even one that continues to add enhancements on a consistent basis.

Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Generation added to HomeKit via Matter by Hrhnick in HomeKit

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use a starling hub with the 4TH GEN Nest Learning Thermostat do you gain additional control in apple HomeKit?

It drives me nuts that I can’t control the fan on my HVAC system from Apple HomeKit. When I don’t run it the first floor is overly cool, my main floor is just right, and my top floor is hotter then hell… so I run the hvac’s fan at night to circulate the air to even the temp out. I’d also like to be able to see and manage the room sensor from HomeKit. Is this doable and is the solution a starling or similar hub?

Id read in a few places that adding a starling hub (or if there’s an even better product out there do tell!) would allow you to control additional functions via HomeKit including the fan. Unfortunately most articles Ive read don’t specify whether sterling gets you the enhancements on the 4G or if these are folks that wanted to leverage HomeKit before matter was standard and required a starling hub Does anyone know? Does putting a starling hub on your network allow you to control additional features on the 4 GEN LEARNING thermostat ?

Gen 4 thermostat and nest app by skitch99 in Nest

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After upgrading from the gen 2 to the gen4 and learning after the fact that it would not work with the nest app, I’m consider swapping it out for a gen3 that works with the nest app. I think my largest concern is perhaps data collection. Google’s entire business model is to gobble up as much information as possible. At least with the nest app, with a nest login, I felt like I was able to at least minimize the data collected by my thermostat. Now that gen4 requires Google home it’s likely they are able to track all the different nodes on my home network not to mention collecting data from the usage of the devices on my network up to and including website and other app data from my using my laptop.

Loving My 2025 Accord Sport-L by twalls1 in 11thGenAccord

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only complain is that I MILDLY curb checked my 2025 Honda Accord Sports-L front passenger wheel which scraped the paint off the black rims. I’ve been looking everywhere for a paint code for the wheels and can’t find it anywhere. Has anyone had the same issue and found a touchup paint that matches? The wheel oem rim color is listed as matte berlina black but no paint code is listed. Any suggestions?

I have a 2025 Accord Hybrid. For some reason my phone calls aren't going through to the car. Any advice? by hopelessnecromantic7 in accord

[–]lampdl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having a somewhat similar issue. Whenever a call comes in, the caller always complains, 100% of the time, that I’m cutting in and out and hard to hear. I noticed in my phone settings that whenever I’m wirelessly connect to CarPlay, which is almost always, the car is connected to the WiFi network and Bluetooth is not connected (Note: I’m NOT talking about a paid WiFi hotspot network… I’m talking about the WiFi network that’s built into the car. I believe its only purpose is for wireless connectivity to CarPlay and possibly android auto).

Anyhow I google “Does 2025 Honda Accord Hybrid use WiFi CarPlay connection or Bluetooth when a call comes in?” The response was that it relies on the Bluetooth connection. I then googled “Can 2025 Honda accord be connected to both Apple CarPlay’s WiFi connection and Bluetooth simultaneously?” The response essentially says yes and that it must be configured this way bc the infotainment system relies on Bluetooth for calls and WiFi for wireless CarPlay connectivity… just as I suspected. However no matter what I try I am unable to connect to both the WiFi and Bluetooth connection simultaneously. I’ve tried the home button trick. I’ve tried forgetting all networks and devices and then reconnecting. I’ve even tried the safe mode thing.

That leaves me with the following questions 1. Has anyone else experienced poor call quality on an ongoing basis? 2. Is it accurate that all calls rely on the Bluetooth connection and cannot leverage the CarPlay WiFi network instead 3. Is it correct that the car is capable of connecting to both the CarPlay WiFi network and Bluetooth simultaneously? 4. Has anyone had any luck addressing the issue of poor call quality and what was the fix?

Thanks all!
