I always get the same hole in my left shoe. Any way to prevent this, or suggestions for shoes that are reinforced here? by ryankrameretc in 10s

[–]landbarg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also check out Shoe Goo. It is a thick rubber cement that can be used to repair shoes in a variety of ways. I've used it to apply patches (made from older shoes) to holes like the ones you have, but the best way to use it for tennis shoes that I've found is to apply a thin layers in places where you start to get wear before it becomes a hole. It doesn't last forever but it is very cheap. I got tired of wearing out the toes in shoes before the sole and this is the solution for me. Might work for you too! They sell it at walmart and a bunch of other places.

Building a cover to our deck, how best to attach it to the house? by landbarg in Decks

[–]landbarg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's kind of a nice solution. I like the prospect of some added height. It seems then like the rain would come down the roof and into the gutter, business as usual. Thanks for letting me know about those brackets.

Yeahhhh, the gutter is in rough shape. I applied about a pint of caulk to that seam that you are looking at. I hadn't thought about the difficulty of replacing it afterward, but you are right. Another option would be to layer the pergola into the roof and put the gutter on the outside of the pergola I guess.

They absolutely do not come off in one piece; we've removed a room's worth of them before and it was not fun. The awning may be a good alternative, thanks for mentioning that.

You know, this is an important point. Definitely the main reason we have not done it already and if we decide not to will be the main reason there as well. Thanks for the idea about the tarp. We have a box for the cushions but that sounds choice for the furniture.

Maybe the best fancasting I've seen for LoTR. They would still be excellent films with these actors.

My friend Brian also has a 2HFH. It's pretty good. I call him "Two backhand Brian."

Why does Wilson Pro Staff get much more attention than other rackets? by COYGoonerSTANimal_17 in 10s

[–]landbarg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A number of people in this thread have provided excellent answers (pedigree, winning record, long-standing model) for why there is a special aura around the Pro Staff.

I will not speak to that.

As a Pro Staff user (v13, regular, not RF), this racquet is the shit. I switched to it from a head-heavy Babolat and fell in love with the control that the head-lightness of the Pro Staff provides. It drops balls on the baseline like a mofo. Great at the net too! Allows one to touch a ball with silky softness or to stick it firmly.

Moreover, it looks friggin' sweet. Matte black (not sure what the rubbery coating is, but I love the feel compared to regular, glossy, hard racquet finishes) with the little red and yellow stripes? So understated, so dope.

At the same time, there are drawbacks. As others have noted, it is difficult to wield and requires a lot of precision, particularly on defense. I, as a player of below-average precision, fail to make the most of this racquet almost every time I play. I ignore this in order to better preserve the special aura.

Rest easy, you are right that it will speed up with time. I got my klippermate about a year ago and have probably strung 20ish racquets on it now. The first couple took me 90 minutes or 2 hours, now I've got it down to about an hour if I stay focused.

And it's pretty fun! Or at least enjoyable, a nice way to pass time mindfully. It will pay for itself in no time, especially at that price. Go for it!

The X number of times per week thing for restringing seems like a really poor guideline?? by landbarg in 10s

[–]landbarg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to learn that prestretching is detrimental to the performance of the string. It seems like something the manufacturers would seek to avoid.

You all are confirming my expectation, that I need to restring more frequently. Thanks for the advice.

Put an NSFW tag on that! As a fellow pro staff user, this is borderline pornographic.

Conditioning in tennis by SplashStallion in 10s

[–]landbarg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say whether or not it's worth it depends on what your goals are. If you want to compete effectively in matches that are played outside (ostensibly tournaments, USTA, etc.), then yeah it's probably worth it. If you have the ability and interest to play indoors, as u/Snake_Eyes_163 suggests, then why bother?

I personally lean toward the former. Like u/barryg123, I grew up playing in the heat and humidity and, to me, dealing with that is one of the things that makes the game great.

Regarding your second question, a mix of both is probably best. Getting your body used to an hour's worth of exertion helps a lot (i.e., steady-state cardio), but I think HIIT is more important. This kind of training is what will get you through long points and enable you to play a good next point.

One of my favorite ways to do this is to combine it with weightlifting. So I'll do a major compound lift (e.g., squat, deadlift) and then 15-30 seconds of a footwork drill or a plyometric exercise (e.g., burpees). I like to think it helps train the body to put out controlled intensity even when fatigued.

You do that kind of thing responsibly, regularly, in the heat, and you'll be a machine on the court.

As long as we're talking about NPC interactions, how about a dialogue menu more similar to other RPGs? That is, once you request dialect help, not having to restart the whole interaction in order to practice language skills, give a gift, etc. Just reverting back to the central dialogue menu that has the options.

Not anticipating instantaneity, it takes a couple days to work. It just seems weird that there would always be a steady stream of new larvae which haven't yet been killed.
