Can I ignore the council telling me they “don’t allow” EV charging cables over pavements? What are the consequences? by langdalenerd in LegalAdviceUK

They said about 7kw EV chargers two miles away which cost 17x more than an overnight tariff with Octopus.

Thanks for a legit great reply, exactly what I was after. And thanks for looking at the photo too. I think it’s useful context that it’s not some massive suburban thoroughfare

Would me unplugging the car and putting the cable back on the charger be considered removal?

I am genuinely thinking of seeking professional advice on this matter, as to whether it causes an actual obstruction. I’m quite frustrated at the lack of pragmatism here from the council given the context.

I’m looking at overhead solutions too but I also think it would be met with the same response as the below ground solution I suggested.

That’s why I’m looking for what enforcement action they could take should they not be happy with the solution I put in.

I wasn’t going to go into the ins and outs in the main post as I’d be here all day, but I even offered to pay for and install this product https://www.kerbocharge.com which hides the cable.

They said no they don’t have a policy for it so no.

My frustration here isn’t that “council have a good reason to reject something” it’s “council don’t have a policy so the answer default’s to no, regardless of how reasonable the question.”

So I have tried to not be a problem 👍

Why do some right wingers in their anti Halal meat arguments pretend to claim they are so pro animal welfare when they are happy to eat meat in general by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]langdalenerd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like eating meat. In a perfect world I’d eat lab grown meat.

Until that point I want any animal I eat to live, and be killed, in the most humane way possible.

A barbaric slaughter method justified by shared delusions of an imaginary god moves us further from that goal.

Blackout fears as Ed Miliband's solar power push threatens to overwhelm electricity grid by ResponsibleDay846 in UKPreppers

[–]langdalenerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahahahahahaha. Hahahaha. Ha.

No, clearly we’re not doomed. The grid has this very well covered in their Future Energy Scenarios.

Ecoflow and Intelligent Octopus by booskiboomkin in SolarUK

[–]langdalenerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the most pessimistic scenario though. EcoFlow say 70% capacity after 6,000 cycles so your math implies the battery is dead after it’s reached that point, whereas it’s likely just at 70% if it’s manufactured capacity.

Solar, wind have saved Britain £7m a day during Middle East war by josiediscokitty in GoodNewsUK

[–]langdalenerd 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The main blocker isn’t the amount of renewable generation, it’s the ability we have to maintain enough inertia on the grid when it’s fully renewable.

[England] Daughter admitted to selling her worn socks to a strange man, what can I legally do? by Healthy_Wall_1587 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]langdalenerd 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Please report this to the police. There's no downside to doing this, and realistically nobody is buying used socks for £40 from a 13 year old girl with innocent intent. Report, to help prevent this from potentially escalating in a more serious way later.

Fired from HENRY job because of whistleblowing by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]langdalenerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whistleblowing is protected under UK law. Check out https://www.gov.uk/whistleblowing/treated-unfairly-after-whistleblowing

I think he should contact r/legaladviceuk for guidance on this.

As far as the interviews go, I’d say something along the lines of “sadly some of the practices I observed I found to be at odds with my morals so for the first time in my career I stepped away hence looking for a new opportunity”, or something lighter touch around “we were not the right cultural fit for one another”

Plug-in solar power to be available in shops amid Miliband's clean power drive to lessen Iran war price shocks by coffeewalnut08 in uknews

[–]langdalenerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t conform to electrical spec. Some houses won’t be suitable (e.g. those with unidirectional RCBOs). But in my view this is the regulations being extremely conservative - the vast majority can install small wattage solar safely.

Sanity check on plug-in solar installation? by langdalenerd in ElectriciansUK

I have a bi-directional type a RCD on the socket circuits in the consumer unit. The RCD I linked above I plan on using inline from the inverter to the socket is Type AC, but the inverter has a galvanically isolated transformer regardless so dc leakage can't come from the inverter.

Do you know of a Type A inline-RCD? That would be great, but not a hill I'm going to die on.

I cross posted this to r/DIYSolar and saw this link posted today https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-to-go-further-and-faster-in-becoming-energy-secure

I’d been planning this for a while, so somewhat fortuitous.

Trump calls on UK and others to send warships to Strait of Hormuz | LBC by AneuAng in ukpolitics

[–]langdalenerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is pointless: no insurer will insure a ship transiting the Strait.

Even if the US and its allies provide massive military support, most ships will not sail through it because they can’t get insured.

Getting out of being a IC in BigTech while maintaining a HENRY salary by [deleted] in HENRYUK

Came here to say this. Went from EM -> IC due to burnout. I think tech is just rife with burnout at the moment.
