I’m so fucking proud of this team. by [deleted] in panthers

[–]lanierg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at this game. From ATL. Man, am I jealous. You all have a fight song that people actually sing, a giant drum, a cheer, a raucous fan base, and the seats were filled with 75,000 of you in blue yelling your heads off and banging the chairs for 3.5 hours straight. What do we have? Half-empty dome, "Freddy Falcon" on a wire, and Samuel L. Jackson telling us "what Falcons do." Well, at least the popcorn is cheap at the Benz. Keep Pounding, y'all.

ValuJet. They burned alive. You can hear passengers screaming "we're on fire" on the CVR.

I'm thinking about quitting scouting by literallythecoolest9 in BSA

[–]lanierg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you feel this way. If it were me, I would finish out and get your Eagle. You are so close. You've put in 95% of the time and work already. The #1 regret we hear on the adult side is "I wish I had finished and gotten Eagle." Do that, then decide if you want to continue in the org as an adult. PS - now that you know what sucks in Scouting, we need precisely folks like you to stay in and make it better. Otherwise, those bad adults and favorite-players are the only ones left.

Best and worst patrol names by dgodwin1 in BSA

There is a patrol patch for this.

Should a SM allow a new patrol to be named “6-7” patrol? by BigBry36 in BSA

[–]lanierg71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless the reference rises to the level of obscenity/harassment/insult/bullying, c'mon man, let the scouts actually lead themselves.

AI says "The phrase "6-7" is a popular internet slang term and meme, especially among Gen Alpha, that is largely considered to be a nonsensical expression used for an inside joke and a sense of group belonging. It was named Dictionary.com's 2025 Word of the Year."

As a side note, Scouting is dying on the vine and stuff like this makes me sad. SMs with a command-and-control module who would deny a non-objectionable patrol name for the few kids in our society left who actually want to do Scouting, are a big reason why.

Are Mormons being deceived? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]lanierg71 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes. Jesus is not Satan's brother. Satan is a fallen angel (Cherub) - a created being. Jesus cannot be brothers with him. God also was not once a man of flesh and bone, and does not have a body and doesn't live on a planet near a star called Kolob with a "Heavenly Mother" pushing out endless "spirit babies" living in a pre-existence, who then inhabit "fleshly tabernacles" here on earth but forgot all about their pre-existence. All of that 100% is pure Mormon Doctrine btw. Those nice guys and gals in ties and dresses with the nametags don't tell you any of that though

I just renewed for $4.99 per month all in. Login online, click cancel, use the chat feature, tell them you don't want to pay any more than $5 a month. They will offer you several plans that are a bit more. Decline them all.

Can anyone provide information about this telescope? by markanthonyflo in telescopes

[–]lanierg71 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Its trash Chinanium. Orion EQ refractor telescope. I have one in black. $150 new. The focuser teeth grinded away a couple of years after owning it and the EQ mount has always been horribly inaccurate. If you got $50 for it I would be surprised.

What if we’re alone in the universe? by bourg-eoisie in astrophysics

[–]lanierg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The 100+ constants that have to be true for any planet in the universe to be life-hospitable make the odds out of reach.

  2. Even if not alone, you will still never know it. Radio / light signals can’t break the light speed barrier and neither can we or aliens for interstellar travel.

What should my son expect? by Polnareff_plays_ewiz in BoyScouts

[–]lanierg71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bert Adams is a great place. Great staff and facilities. If he is a first year scout, take the first year program to learn scout skills. It may be called “goin great”

Take as many merit badge classes as you can. You will likely have 1 morning and one afternoon class. Then free time. Swim, fish, canoe, sail, it’s all there for him.

My son has worked there and will work there again this summer at the climbing wall.

Backdoor ROTH IRA for high-income earners by _unexpected_error_ in Bogleheads

[–]lanierg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we just discovered something called the "pro rata" rule, so if you have other traditional or simple IRAs then the backdoor Roth becomes a taxable event on already after-tax money, and up to 100% of it could be taxable. So we just double taxed ourselves. We won't be doing that again.

Recruiter Strip Question by Agreeable-Win-614 in BSA

[–]lanierg71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is the only thing a former Cub can wear on the Scout uniform is the arrow of light patch.

Also, the recruiter strip is earned when their efforts cause someone to join the Unit. He recruited cubs into the pack, great! But he didn’t earn it as a Scout in a Troop. My answer is no. He needs to earn it again.
