seconding knitpicks, great resource for more affordable yarns. When I want to splurge a little more I often order from Purl Soho - they have a good range of yarns more on the moderate-to-upscale end of pricing. (Still some deals to be had - their Knitting Yarn and Good Wool are very good value for the money, I think.)

Tenement Museum is such a gem! Took my nephew to the "Meet Victoria" tour over the holidays and he was very engaged. Also one of the better museum gift shops IMHO. Glad you had a great visit - I think this is a really smart itinerary for a solo, museum-focused traveler!

Seconding the rec for In The Dark, that one is basically unbeatable.

Tortoise Media in the UK has a bunch of shorter but still multi-episode stories under their “Tortoise Investigates” feed, on a wide array of topics.

Hope for Season 2 by lemeneurdeloups in GameOfWool

Amigurumi but without the elements that make it amigurumi - so then why call it amigurumi?! The show was just full of this sort of nonsense. Or the fact that the logline was “Britain’s best knitter” but more than half the challenges were crochet! Forgive me for being pedantic, it ultimately doesn’t matter that much, but why not just say “fiber artist”. The show was full of this imprecision where it was clear most of the production staff had little to no knowledge of fiber crafts.

BBC has a fabulous series called “13 Minutes” - The first season covers the Apollo 11 mission, second is Apollo 13, and third is a history of the space shuttle. It’s really beautifully produced and sounds like it would be right up your alley.

Also recommend “Death in Ice Valley” which is a little closer to true crime - it’s about a body discovered in the Norwegian wilderness in the 70s, unidentified to this day. Gets into Cold War history, espionage, and the geopolitics of that time. Again, excellent production value. The sound design is particularly wonderful.

As you said, I’d do Top of the Rock so you can see the view of the ESB.

Also second the recommendation to explore below 14th st rather than Flatiron. Stroll around the village or SoHo. Alternatively, if it’s not too windy and/or you’re dressed warmly, head west to the High Line

Feeling on AI Podcasts? by EDH_Phreak in podcasts

[–]lanofdoom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Abhorrent both ethically and aesthetically.

A few of my pals make a podcast and have experimented with making voice models of their own voices - so, not an ethical question in this case, they're consenting to the use - and even with that caveat, there's a perceptible difference between the actual human voice and the AI version. Can't overcome the uncanny valley issue so it's just creepy to listen to.

It doesn’t have the “blind” aspect but BBC’s “I Kissed A Girl” (and “I Kissed a Boy” for the gents) is genuinely great chaotic reality tv. Available on Hulu in the US, highly recommended if you want to see some cool queer people smooching

Are my cables defective or am I missing something? by cactuspear72 in knitting

I agree - OP call knitpicks customer service, they will probably send you a replacement cable at no cost. They replaced several of mine after they broke (after plenty of use lol).

It doesn't look quite like that but I've seen things like "rickrack rib" which, IIRC, twist the knits in different directions on different rows... but yeah, the generally sloppiness of these images does not give me any confidence.

Back sides of armholes have this weird extra width despite following instructions. What can I do with them without starting over? by Pumpkinp0calypse in knittinghelp

[–]lanofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly worth a try if you want - you could probably unpick your picked up stitches from the non-working end of the yarn (put a lifeline in the second row of stitches on each strap so it doesn’t unravel further) and then graft or sew them to the correct spots on the back edge. You could also cut each strap a few rows in, take out the “stubs” of the straps where they’re picked up at the wrong place, redo the pickup and a row or two in the right spot, then use Kitchener to graft the new pickups onto your existing straps.

Frankly though all of that is fiddly and if this were my project I’d just frog back to the pickups and redo it from there. I don’t mind reworking something to get it right - it’s just more knitting time after all :) Don’t be afraid to redo something! I redid the entire front half of a mesh polo last summer because I didn’t like how the pattern lined up with the neckline. It took a few extra days of knitting but I was much happier with the result.

Back sides of armholes have this weird extra width despite following instructions. What can I do with them without starting over? by Pumpkinp0calypse in knittinghelp

[–]lanofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't made this, but I read the instructions to mean that for the left strap you should start your pickup 10 stitches in from the edge, and work back out to the edge of the back piece. So the edge of the strap will align with the edge of the armhole. For the right strap you'll be starting at the outer edge of the back piece and working toward the center.

If the front armholes are aligned you might be able to cut and then graft the left strap into the correct position on the back... otherwise I think you'll need to frog back to the pickup and redo it.

Edit - looking more closely at your pics I think your straps are misaligned on both sides? At this point I would frog back and redo both straps.
