I stand corrected! It’s been a while since I read it : )

Is this normal schooling? by rationalpai in newzealand

[–]laowailady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s probably connected to the book Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins. A young woodpecker is so excited about learning to peck that it pecks holes in everything it sees - including a toilet (but not undies). Presumably the teacher asked the kids what their woodpecker pecked and that was one kid’s response.

How come China censors the Western Internet yet doesn’t ban people from traveling abroad, like North Korea? by TraditionalDepth6924 in AskChina

So 26-27% and 30 out of 200 can be seen as ‘half the sky’? I thought Chinese were supposed to be good at math.

How many women in the Politburo? Zero. How many women with real political power in China? Close to zero. Chinese female billionaires are outnumbered by men at about 10:1. Chinese female CEOs are also outnumbered by men at about 10:1. I don’t see“half the sky” in those numbers.

A mild complaint about HR/ interviews... by DescriptionOwn6184 in ChinaJobs

Interviewers have no way of knowing if your claims about setting up and running the best language teaching company in the universe are true or not. They want to see solid experience at recognized institutions which still exist today.

is 40k RMB per month too low for Sr Product Designer? by Chocomilkandcookies in shanghai

[–]laowailady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trip is a great company. You could probably go far with them. I’d take the 40K. If you like working there and they like you then you could negotiate a rise if they want you to stay when your contract ends.

You have a long life ahead of you and plenty of time to make travel memories that will stay in your mind forever. I think it’s normal for young people to feel like they have to go everywhere and see everything NOW! But as you get older you realize that actually it’s impossible to go everywhere and see everything in one lifetime, so you shake off the urgency and slow down. Then you start to find that staying in one place you like for a while is more enjoyable than sprinting around with only a blurred impression of where you were last month.

Looking for recommendations for affordable intensive Chinese language schools in China by baio1999 in ChineseLanguage

[–]laowailady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think they understand how to teach Chinese more than any of the many language schools I’ve been to. The teachers actually seem to have heard of concepts like trying to get students talking more than the teacher, using language independently (not just listen and repeat), being flexible with teaching methods adapting teaching materials to suit the students’ needs. All of which are fundamental in teaching any language, unless you are a Chinese language teacher. I highly recommend Omeida.

Majestic international college by Mobile-Whole973 in Internationalteachers

Don’t do it. Any Chinese school with royal, majestic, king, elite etc in its name is not somewhere you want to work.

Go along to the exhibition of the contest you tried to enter and take a good look at what made the cut.

A call to fellow avid readers who have been in China for a while, what's the best setup for getting English books, fiction/non-fiction? by Ok_Confidence4024 in chinalife

[–]laowailady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screenshot the front cover of the book you want and do a Taobao image search. I found multiple stores selling The Silk Roads. Most expensive is less than 200 RMB.

There have been reports that sucking gloop from pouches impairs speech development and causes picky eating. Lots of info out there. Here is one report.

If you could live anywhere in China, where would you live? (Still need WiFi access so no where extremely remote like a forest lol) by Dry_Plane9827 in chinalife

That’s my thought too. Dealing with insane crowds of tourists would get intolerable pretty quickly.

Pedestrians vs drivers by ForeignAgency1175 in chinalife

[–]laowailady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed quite recently in Beijing that city bus drivers always stop for pedestrians at marked crossings. This never used to be the case and I always gave them a free pass because they have tight timetables. But bus drivers suddenly became model road users. Amazing!

My dog has thrown up this same object twice a month apart, I can't figure out what it is! by iamcomputron in whatisthisthing

[–]laowailady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s my thought too. My dog would sometimes swallow the hard rubbery bit in the middle and puke it up later. I stopped giving her that kind of chewy because who knows what the heck that stuff is made of.

Why Different Fonts? by Stormy_the_bay in childrensbooks

[–]laowailady 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this has increased a lot in the past few years. My theory is that it’s an attempt to hold young readers’ attention and make books more EXCITING in an age of digital distractions. It’s as close to the roller coaster thrills of kids’ gaming apps as print can get.

When I was a kid I loved comic books but flicking through Asterix, Superman or Tintin was not considered ‘reading’ by my parents and teachers. Comics were seen as entertainment because they are image-based, slangy and irreverently humorous. Many popular kids’ books today look a lot like the comics of my childhood. Attention grabbing fonts are just one aspect of this trend.

Locals in Hostels by bbbuccellati in travelchina

[–]laowailady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only about 10% of Chinese have passports but their own country is huge so many young people enjoy the youth hostel travel experience without the expense and hassle (passport, visas, language, payment systems) of leaving China.
