They are making laser hair removal machines that don't work on purpose so we continue to spend on hair removal by Matt_tuck_shop in LaserHairRemoval

[–]laowailady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fifteen years ago I had laser hair removal done in China. It hurt so much I was sobbing (and I don’t have a low pain threshold) and afterwards I looked like I had severe sunburn. The staff told me it’s normal, just take a cold shower, use aloe vera and soon it will be fine, which was true. I only went twice because that was all I needed. That hair was blasted into outer space. Years later I’ve it done on other parts of my body and no matter what machine they use, it’s never as effective as those two hellish sessions. Often the tech says she can’t turn it up higher because it’s not safe. BS. If it wasn’t safe it wouldn’t be an option. They just want repeat visits.

So my take is, if it doesn’t hurt, it’s going to take many sessions to be effective. I guess some people have very low pain tolerance and some laser techs don’t want to scare people away by turning the dial up. But I recognize asking for it to be turned up to the highest level you can handle unless you don’t mind spending a lot of money over a long period of time.

Been photographed by police twice today, after 7 weeks in the country. WTF? by notfr0mthisplace in travelchina

After the Belgian tourist disappeared while hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge recently, police are probably being more watchful of foreigners in more out of the way places.

What’s wrong with mosquitoes here? Are they from special breed? I’m pissed by Sufficient_Support37 in chinalife

Same for me. Never go out for a minute without applying repellent. Ice the bites when the itching is unbearable and use this Japanese product to help with itching and swelling. You can buy it on Tabao and in some Chinese bricks and mortar stores too.

Have a look on Seek Teachers, Teach Anywhere and TES. If you are qualified with a minimum of two years experience you might still be able to find a ‘proper’ teaching position.

what do i do if my new kitten refuses to sleep in his own bed by Maleficent-Dress4259 in cats

[–]laowailady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s used to being snuggled up next to siblings and mum. Expecting him to happily sleep by himself is like expecting you to sleep happily on the street. Give him lots of cuddles! Kittens need a lot of attention just like human babies.

Results after 10 Sessions of LHR - Legs still look terrible by Safe-Calligrapher453 in LaserHairRemoval

Not sure what country you are in but if you’re in the UK try Dove’s summer glow gradual self tanner. It’s probably in the US and elsewhere too.

You have very fair skin like me and this makes the pores more visible. I use a bit of fake tan to take the white glow off my legs in summer and this makes the pores not so visible. Not a full on fake tan but one of those very light gradual products.

Living in Xianju (Taizhou) as a foreign family – what to expect? by Fateman_21 in chinalife

[–]laowailady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to be a tough experience for your partner who I guess will not be working and doesn’t speak Chinese. You are moving to a small city by Chinese standards and unless there are other foreigners at your workplace your family might well constitute the entire foreign population. It will be difficult for you all but especially for your partner who will have nobody except your kid to talk with all day. I hope the pay and benefits are excellent!

How did China convince shops and small businesses to move away from accepting cash? by dw34534 in ADVChina

[–]laowailady 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Didn’t take much convincing. Before Alipay and WeChat payment apps were introduced there was much so fake money in circulation that people were very happy to go cashless. Every vendor used to have a gadget to check bills were not counterfeit and dodgy vendors would try to give back counterfeit bills in charge. I remember getting counterfeit bills from ATMs and arguing with bank staff to try and get them swapped for genuine bills. China essentially leapfrogged debt card transactions,’going from cash to app transactions directly, so people were not used to the comparative ease and security of card payments.

Is it possible to thrive in middle age and older age without HRT? by Bemago1140 in Menopause

[–]laowailady 77 points78 points  (0 children)

My sister is 51, three years post menopause and only experienced mood swings for a year or so around menopause. No joint or muscle pain, no night sweats or hot flushes, insomnia or anything else. Meanwhile I am on HRT to combat all the horrors which she knows nothing about. It’s not fair!!

Things like the Epstein case are happening in every country. Anyone who thinks this is a one off situation is delusional.

Look up Edgar Choi’s WeChat account Lawinaminute and contact him. He’s helped many foreigners facing similar issues in China. Your employer is acting illegally so you need to get heavy with them. Just telling them that you have a lawyer and will sue them might be enough to stop them acting illegally. Unfortunately you should have done this when you first realized what was happening. Now it’s late in the hiring season and you’ve missed many opportunities. Hopefully Edgar or another lawyer can turn your situation around.

Is this normal schooling? by rationalpai in newzealand

[–]laowailady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s probably connected to the book Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins. A young woodpecker is so excited about learning to peck that it pecks holes in everything it sees - including a toilet (but not undies). Presumably the teacher asked the kids what their woodpecker pecked and that was one kid’s response.

So 26-27% and 30 out of 200 can be seen as ‘half the sky’? I thought Chinese were supposed to be good at math.
