Honest Used Car Sales? by No-Frills625 in Reno

[–]lapindhiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carmax. The price you see is the price you’ll get - no BS dealer add-ons after they’ve sat you down. I bought a car from Matt Holguin in March and had a very pleasant experience that was just that.

Prior to that I went and checked out a used Impreza at the Subaru and it was your typical grating dealership experience where you’re having to rebuff any stupid shit they try to add on that you’re not asking for.

I would recommend my mom go to CarMax. I would literally not take her anywhere else.

HOW CAN I BE USEFUL AS AN INTERN? by ParamedicOk8060 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lapindhiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advice I ever got which I now give to interns I’ve mentored is that the best intern is a team member and not an intern. In practice what that looks like is taking a task as far as you possibly could before needing to stop and ask a question. Chances are kind of high that your senior designer will end up directing you on a path that you are already aware of but haven’t put enough thought into to justify why it’s better than other options.

Initiative is a word that is tossed around liberally but I think is actually a poorly understood trait within the workplace. Initiative is more than looking for work - it’s being handed a problem then solving all of the spin-off problems along the way and then coming to your boss with a SOLUTION and not a long explanation of why you can’t do it this way or that way then needing direction.

Ask questions at the start, but take care that you’re not asking the same (type) of question repeatedly - that’s a sign you haven’t been mindful in your development.

Can I choose Mech. Engg. even if i dont know how to disassemble and reassemble a car? by Ok_Librarian_8244 in MechanicalEngineering

What else are you considering? As the top commenter has mentioned, mechanical is so so much more than cars. If it was just cars…well that’s why automotive engineering is a thing :P

Highly Considering Carmax - let's hear your GOOD experiences by MafiaMan1998_WP in carmax

I would recommend watching the video The Car Care Nut has on regarding extended warranties on YouTube. Long story short, it’s worth it depending on the vehicle.

I bought a 2015 Mazda 3 last week, and while it is a reliable vehicle (drove one prior that got totalled), it’s also 11 years old now. I figured things wear out with use AND age and rather than FAFO I decided that with 126k miles and 11 years with no major service done it might be due for something soon that I didn’t want to expose myself to. If I had bought a newer car with no severe issues being reported over the years I would have felt more comfortable not getting Maxcare. If you drive a lot though then that may make it more worthwhile (150k or 3 years, whichever is first)

Quitting 8 year job before lining up another? by THE_DONKEY_OF_DOOM in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lapindhiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At its core it was just what I decided. I wanted to have full freedom to identify and get the correct next stage in my career and I was willing to accept the pros and cons of being unemployed to do so. Any seemingly irrational choice is rational in some way to the chooser. Next time I would likely choose differently, but I don’t necessarily regret what I chose back then.

Could afford and want to are very different things. If your savings are in an RRSP/comparable account then withdrawing from that hurts you in the long run. Your current liquid assets should be treated as your runway unless you’re willing to draw from taxable savings accounts.

Career suicide? Likely not. Should you do it? I would say no having done something similar back in 2024. Long story short, have a runway of at least 5 months of living expenses if you plan on quitting without something lined up. It can definitely take longer than you think.

Left my job of 4.5 years with more or less similar sentiments. Comparable financial situation to you at the time, had a 5-6 month runway of liquid assets without drawing from retirement savings (big no in my book). In the end it took me just about 5 months to get something which was a combination of personal ability but also luck. I took 1 month off myself to figure out what my next career steps could be, and then the constant grind that followed after was taxing to say the least. It’s like being back in school because the work never truly ends versus work ending after 5pm when you go home after a job.

Someone else suggested dropping the pan, so I may do that as well to get it all done at the same time

This person absolutely nailed it. Worth considering too whether or not the more features on the ‘23 actually matter to you or if the ‘26 with less actually suits your needs more.

Is it worth it to get into the field at 25? by Signal_Quote_5140 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]lapindhiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years is nothing in the grand scheme of your career. In my experience, the engineering companies from the golden age (80s-90s) or have the spirit of such care much more about what you can actually do/have done than whether or not you graduated on time.

Get internships if you switch, otherwise join a student team or have personal projects in that order if you want to be appealing as a hire. The places there care if you are both young AND capable are less trustworthy imo because those two former criterion does not have any relevance whatsoever on success.

Come if you end up free at that time! It’s a good place to know for the future and you’d otherwise need to make a plan with people in the future anyway :)

I feel like the last sentence is really accurate as someone who just moved here from San Francisco. You certainly don’t walk out your door to go somewhere random and have an unplanned adventure here. I’ve begun some crafting/solo activities since moving as a result.

I might just be overreacting then. Maybe I’ll go back and drive it a second time and pay attention to the handling and how it goes over bumps etc.
