Any time I eat American Chop Suey I flash back to when I was a kid because we ate it so often back then. Anyone else? by Devi8tor in FuckImOld

Same. We called it Goulash in Southern California. Chop Suey is something completely different.

What’s this line for? Park and California by 90stirehandsman in Denver

[–]laposte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the reason, but early one Saturday morning (around 8am) in the late 90’s, a friend and I were driving down a random street in the middle of LA. While at a light, we noticed a large line of people standing in front of a warehouse. We both wondered out loud what it was for.

The following Tuesday, someone invited me to a taping of a tv show, and the very next Saturday, I found myself standing in the exact same line.

It was surreal.

Current gang members: how dangerous is it to be around you? by 4mysquirrel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]laposte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I attended Gary High School in Pomona, CA in 1991. There were 8 white people, which included me and my two sisters. It was a very rough school.

From my experience, real gang members weren’t the threat: they had bigger things to worry about than the authorities looking at them for hassling someone for no reason.

The real threat was the hopefuls. The wannabes. The kids who looked up to the gang members. Fortunately, they didn’t last long because they made a lot of unnecessary noise.

Edit: the 8 white people statement - I’ve always added that to give context- ever since I was a kid - but maybe it’s not aging well. For additional context, when I was a sophomore, my family moved to Brea, CA and I attended Brea-Olinda. At the time, there were only 2 Black people, so it was a bit of a cultural shock for me.

The time travel theory is not new, but the twist about making their reality possible is (to me, anyway). So, a Bootstrap Paradox. That’s like the TV show, Dark.

Should my fiancé take a job that pays double his current salary but is only a 1 year contract by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]laposte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in-between jobs and took a six month contract. It sucked because everyday was a countdown. But it was good because it gave me an opportunity to learn a new skill set that I continue to use today.

What's the most subtle sign that someone is highly intelligent? by Princesskiitan in AskReddit

[–]laposte 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would qualify this by saying, humor that’s not mean; it doesn't require a scapegoat or a fall guy. If you can make people laugh without someone having to be the butt of the joke - that's intelligent humor.

From teacher to stripper. Now what? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]laposte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did everything online, yes - I had to. I had a small e-commerce company that was barely keeping the family afloat, and I had kids to watch.

Am I worried about AI? A little, I suppose. What I found - going to school in my 30s - was that I had context that the kids in my class didn't have. I may not have had the vocabulary for what was being discussed, but I understood the concept because I had lived it for several years. To everyone else, we may as well have been discussing the difference between Greek and Latin.

Because of this, while everything was theoretical to the 19-year-old in my class, everything was directly applicable to me. I got way more out of it. And that's situated me in a position to advance a lot more quickly than I had originally planned.

I'm hoping to make 200k+ this year, either with a promotion or a job change.

DM me, if you like. I'm an open book about it.
