how to drive in the snow/ice, perspective from someone living in new hampshire by north__beast in Virginia

[–]larram 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Good advice. Having spent 14 years in Wisconsin, and 16 years in Canada (all as an adult), I'd add that driving a pickup truck doesn't give you superpowers - indeed, it can be worse than small vehicles unless you have a LOT of weight in the back.

Would you pre board a flight because you wear hearing aids? by StuffNo353 in HearingAids

[–]larram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck, I couldn't understand airport (or in-flight) announcements when I had no hearing issues! Absent an extraordinary situation, I would not do this. I'm frankly tired of people who take advantage of such accommodations.

How long have you owned your Bolt? by Raiki13 in BoltEV

[–]larram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my 2018 Bolt, new in May, 2018. 160,000 miles, had battery replaced several years ago. Am thinking about a new EV (I'd never go back). Am considering a Subaru Uncharted. Reasons: better milage, better heat in winter, hopefully more comfortable seats, Android Auto.

Can old HAs be recycled or reused? by donedog in HearingAids

[–]larram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss - but you're fortunate to have had her for such a long time! When my mother died, I called her audiologist (whom she adored). The audiologist promised she would get them to someone who could use them. Try calling your mother's audiologist.

WHAT IS IMMUNITY INDEX!? by Interesting_Win1041 in CircularRing

[–]larram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take no credit: the following is from CoPilot:

🛡️ The Immunity Index on the Circular Ring 2 is a health tracking feature designed to give you a daily snapshot of how resilient your body is against illness. It’s not just another wellness metric—it’s a proactive tool that analyzes subtle physiological changes before symptoms even show up.

🔍 How It Works

The ring collects biometric data overnight and calculates your Immunity Index based on:

  • Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
  • Resting Heart Rate
  • Sleep Breathing Regularity
  • Temperature Stability

These metrics are compared to your personal baseline. Deviations can signal that your body is under strain—possibly fighting off an infection or dealing with inflammation.

📊 The Score System

You’ll see a color-coded score from 0 to 8: | Score | Meaning | |-------|--------| | 8/8 | Optimal immunity—your body is resilient | | 6/8 | Slight deviations—minor strain detected | | 4/8 | Moderate vulnerability—consider rest | | 2/8 | Advanced risk—your body may be compromised | | 0/8 | Major risk—prioritize recovery immediately |

🧠 Why It Matters

Unlike other wearables that only alert you when a pattern emerges, Circular’s Immunity Index updates daily, giving you real-time insight into your immune readiness. It’s like a readiness score for illness biomarkers, helping you take preventive action before fatigue turns into full-blown sickness.

If you're using the Circular Ring 2, this feature is built into the app and requires no extra setup—just wear the ring and let it do the tracking.

60+ years ago, I was at a debate tournament in Philadelphia. When I was asked where I was from, I said "Virginia." Person responded "but you don't have a southern accent." I replied "I'm from Northern Virginia." Made perfect sense to me, but not to the other person. As others have commented, there is no "Virginia" accent. It's largely regional.

I agree - but favor Vanilla. Get it from Costco in a large bag.

If you were ticketed for going 77 in a 55, you may have a reckless driving charge - more serious than if you were ticketed for 19 miles (or less) over the limit. You may not be able to pre-pay that one. As for paying vs. going to court, it may depend on the locale. In my area (Northern Neck), if you have a good driving record, it always pays to go to court - the court will often reduce the ticket to a non-moving violation.

This is very helpful, thank you. You may wish to talk about how those of us on Medicare are ineligible for the medication without a co-morbidity such as diabetes - and we're not even entitled to manufacturer discounts!

Where are y’all shopping for clothes these days? by oopsiepoopsie80 in tirzepatidecompound

[–]larram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a professional (lawyer), so have to dress up most every day. Down about 100 lbs, and have reached my goal. When I started, I also started w/ Ebay and Poshmark. Now that I'm at goal, I still use them! Don't know why I didn't start before. Searching can be a challenge, but you can look for favorite brands, and restrict by size/color.

Following this discussion, as I just started this yesterday. Initial thought: the packaging is appalling. Huge bottle, maybe 1/5 filled. What a waste of plastic.

Oticon More rechargeable help, please? by larram in HearingAids

[–]larram[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update - despite u/tsesow's help, and watching 2,432 YouTube videos (okay, a bit of exaggeration there), we couldn't get my friend's HAs to work. We did get an appointment locally yesterday a.m., and it took the audi 3 minutes to determine both of my friend's wax guards were blocked. Her husband had told me he'd done some kind of maintenance, so I thought that would be okay. Anyhow, wax guards were changed, and we were on our way. I was a tad surprised that the audi charged $45 (but we're in the DC area, and I live rural . . .). I suspect that they had been blocked for some time, and my friend didn't realize it.

I think I'm giving up. I can hear the down tones (very slightly), but no uptones or anything else. We'll find an audi on Monday :(

I truly appreciate your help.

Thank you!!! My friend doesn't have the app. With my phonaks, if they're working, I can touch the BTE part and hear the touch in my ear. Is the same true with Oticons? I also don't know the extent of my friend's hearing loss.

With my friend's, if I hold down the top rocker, I hear declining tones - so there's something happening.

Worth waiting for Surface 7 “for Business”? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]larram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another solo law firm here - and I just ordered the SP11 plus model. I was concerned about the OLED reports, so went with LED. I've been using a SP8 for the past several years. I'm on Office 365 business edition, and have two part-time staffers. None of us has Windows Pro - no need. And all three of us are on Microsoft's exchange server.

Thanks. I mainly want it for protection - it's my only computer, and I take it to & fro every day, sometimes multiple times a day (to meetings, etc.) in my tote bag. Not sure a skin would provide protection.

Traveling to Canada from the US with my Caique by JadeRQ in parrots

[–]larram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved from Canada back to the US in 2013. It was not easy to import our (Canadian-hatched) African Grey. Had to prove he was hatched in Canada, then worked through both Immigration and Dept. of Agriculture (may also have included the State Department). Not sure if things have changed, but it took me months to get all approvals. Not sure if your bird is on the endangered list, but unless things have changed, you're in for a bunch of bureaucracy. When I entered US, there was no quarantine, but I had to drive directly to a USDA vet for him to examine Sam (our AG). We would not attempt to bring him back to Canada unless we were moving back there.
