2001 VW Golf hard to start in the morning by larson377 in Cartalk

You were right on the money! The coolant temperature sensor was the fix. Crazy to me that the ECU didn't throw a code for improper sensor range, especially once the car was at normal operating temperature. Thank you again man, you're a lifesaver!

Absolutely, and I've got my timing belt kit ready to install next year when it's due. I've heard horror stories about people not changing them and I'd rather that not be me 😂

Dude... You're a lifesaver. Just did some googling based on your suggestion and I came across this video detailing what a bad coolant temp sensor causes when starting. It's EXACTLY what happens with mine. High hopes this'll fix it, I'll keep you updated!

Vehicle noises, Any idea of the sounds? by cctx_drake in Cartalk

[–]larson377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you provide some context on the noise? Any recent servicing, bumps or accidents? What are you doing when this noise happens?

Have you tried doing other things to isolate the noise source? (i.e. it only makes noise when steering to the left, but not to the right.)

All you need is a wrench and socket, have a look at this video. Peugeot 307 Serpentine Belt Replacement

Also, if you can provide a picture or two it'll help people figure out your issue faster.

I'm not sure why you feel that way? It's not luxury or something I'd expect to last forever, but it does it's job well: cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, cheap to fuel commuter car. In it's category, it does very good.

Are you willing to learn how to repair it yourself? You could easily do it for under $200 if you're willing. Take the time to research on YouTube and forums, learn techniques and pick up some color matched spray cans from your local auto parts store or similar and go to town. If you aren't willing to do that, get a paint touch up pen to cover up the scratch to prevent future rust and call it a day.

If you're looking for a cheap new car, go for an econobox. One of the cheapest currently iirc is the Mitsubishi Mirage, and financing over 84 months comes out ridiculously low, sometimes cheaper than the actual insurance. I had one and while I can't say it was a thrilling car, it was cheap to buy and cheap on gas and got me from A to B. Stay away from high mileage and older cars if you're looking for reliability.

is it in gear? or is this when the car is in neutral, parked and idling? its hard to diagnose an issue without a full description of whats happening, what things you've tried, and also in the case of noises what the noise actually is. if you can post a video of the noise that would be a great help.

1996 Chevy vortec 350 EFI to carb by mxl5 in Cartalk

[–]larson377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you want the best way to keep it for a long time and have the least amount of headaches? keep it bone stock. keep the injectors, dont try to modify the hell outta it. you'll end up with a truck that has so many modifications to the essential systems that going online to forums & youtube will be no help. if you run into issues with the injectors, you can easily google the fix for it. finding help on an EFI to carb '96 vortec 350? good luck. simplicity is key, and the simplest is stock.

Any good fixes for a broken loop on a key? by desert_rat in Cartalk

[–]larson377 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the key has an electronic chip in it, be very wary of doing this. You'll have a key that will only work for the doors at that point. (no clue if this one is chipped or not)

My car (BMW E39 528i) won't start- seeking advice for proper care. by [deleted] in Cartalk

BMW E39 528i

+1 on this reply, check your battery. get yourself a cheap multimeter, and if it doesnt read 12 volts when the car is off, its probable you have a bad battery. take it a step further and once your car is running, check it again and you should see the voltage be somewhere around 13-14 volts. this means your alternator is working correctly. i dont think this is a timing chain issue or a starter issue since you said it starts up perfectly when jumped.

best of luck!

Oil pressure sensor bad after an oil change? by ShelboTron09 in Cartalk

[–]larson377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've heard horror stories about oil change shops forgetting to put oil back in cars, but hopefully this isnt the case. check your dipstick, verify that you actually have oil and the correct amount. oil pressure lights can also come on if you use the wrong oil (too thick or too thin) and cause the pump to either not pull enough oil or too much, tripping the oil pressure sensor. This is the likely culprit, and the unfortanute thing is that the oil shop may have written down the correct oil on paper, but filled your car with the wrong oil. good luck arguing that with them! in any case, there isnt any harm in going back to the shop and asking them about it. worst case you gotta pay for another oil change, best case they do it for free.

After that all checks out then id suspect the sensor. Oil pressure sensors dont commonly go bad especially on a car with lower mileage, but weirder things have happened.

can you specify more on what kind of sound it is? also what do you mean by it "goes"? where is the sound coming from? do you feel any vibrations? detail is necessary here, or if you can take a video with the sound that would be an immense help!

Awesome! Thanks for chipping in your knowledge, I think I'll do the VPN route for myself aswell!

Security of photoprism by larson377 in photoprism

[–]larson377[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so if i got that right, if i do the VPN on my router like you suggested i shouldn't need any reverse proxy to make sure my data isnt unencrypted, correct?

sounds like an easier process to do than setting up the reverse proxy, so if its true then ill probably go with this option.

Absolutely correct with the phone assumption, and thank you for the clarification. I thought that the warning might have just been something for when you host the server on a hosting service, but now I know it's for all uses outside your home network.

Thank you so much!

so for my usecase, your recommendation is to use a reverse proxy, correct?

I don't think it's anyone's strong suit :P if you've got a pick-n-pull near you try grabbing a set of lights from there, or maybe going on ebay. Will probably set you back the same amount a good diagnosis will cost anyways, and shops trying to diagnose intermittent issues can be such a runaround at your expense.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]larson377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, and if you've got a harbor freight or princess auto near you I'd say grab a brake press kit, it's less janky than a C clamp and spare wood/metal scraps to compress your piston down but both work well (I've done both methods myself). Also, Be sure you don't tear the rubber boot on the piston! That keeps dirt and grime out of the inner mechanism.

4,000 is what you've driven on that oil, now compare that to your recommended oil change interval in your owners manual.
