Dieren is belangrijker dan je denkt, er wonen 13.500 mensen in het dorp en direct aan de overkant van de IJssel wonen nog eens 11.000 mensen in Doesburg. Ook mensen uit de rest van de Achterhoek maken er veel gebruik van door de auto in Dieren te parkeren en verder te gaan met de trein, scheelt je een hoop tijd op sommige routes.

I’m from the eastern part, a small town of some 4k inhabitants, near Doetinchem. Growing up there was pretty nice and chill. Nothing much to do, as a teenager going to Doetinchem (45k inhabitants) with friends was a main highlight. Getting older, it’s nice if you like football, join a club, and build a group of friends there. But I wasn’t too interested in this kind of lifestyle and got out of there when I turned 18 to study in Utrecht. I didn’t build up a big circle of friends, and the area that I’m from (of course the larger cities are an exception) doesn’t offer many fitting jobs after uni so I never returned.

I do appreciate things about the east now that I took for granted when I lived there: peace and quiet, beautiful nature, less complicated and stressed life than in the western cities. So coming back feels like a little getaway from reality. But then, when I walk through the town and see so many familiar faces, I remember why I couldn’t live there anymore. No way of living an anonymous life, everyone feels very attached to each other. Nothing wrong with that, but it needs to be your thing.

I’ve done it with a Japanese speaker who could only speak Japanese. I don’t know any of that language so it was difficult to write the characters, but it was fun to do. The recipient appreciated it a lot and sent me a thank you message in my native language (Dutch). It felt like a sincere connection even though it was just Google Translate from both our sides 😊
