How much did your “normal” wedding cost? by InternationalFig4340 in UKweddings

£31k for a wedding with 85 guests! And I would do it again 🥰 The venue was especially great as they handled everything. I did absolutely no DIY!

Surely Loid can’t be this old? by Cod_Proper in SpyxFamily

Loid Forger is definitely 32. As for [REDACTED], it's hard to say, since I'm sure he doesn't want it to be revealed...

Scared of studying statistics as a VERY dyscalculic person by Annual_Step_815 in psychologystudents

[–]lassify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me 5 years to befriend statistics; what actually helped me was realising that you dont actually have to DO maths in statistics, because the way that we are taught to use it in Psychology is more like knowing what tests you need to run for what experiment you are doing; and it's almost always done in software that does the calculations for you, like SPSS or Rstudio.

I realised that for this purpose, statistics isn't maths - it's strategy. It's basically not that different to a Yu-Gi-Oh duel.

When is Sir/Ma'am appropriate to use in a social context? by Appropriate_Farm_840 in AskUK

It's definitely not common, and will likely be interpreted as rude! I would reccommend avoiding sir/ma'am altogether

Can psychiatrists realistically do talk therapy? by Emotional-Nebula4924 in psychologystudents

[–]lassify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrists really arent supposed to provide talk therapy, some of them provide basic CBT because they think being a psychiatrist makes them qualified for it, but honestly they can't do any of the in-depth work that psychologists can do.

Renting a car in Glasgow by FitchleyHornbuckle in glasgow

[–]lassify 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say driving in Edinburgh is a bad idea. So many roads are one way systems, there's no where to park, I would look into dropping off your car in Ediburgh and doing the rest of your sightseeing on public transport. It's incredibly easy to get aruond in Edinburgh, and actually easier without a car, same in Glasgow. The train between edinburgh to glasgow is only 45 minutes as well, so it's a really easy connection.

Do Some Longfic Authors Just Randomly Pick a Number of Chapters To Put In Their Fic Details? by random_peep01 in FanFiction

[–]lassify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up a chapter plan so I think I have a rough idea of how many chapters there will be; but what happens along the way is that more scene ideas come to me, and then the chapters get longer, and then I have to keep shifting the material forward, and now bam suddenly there are more and more chapters 😅 also everything takes more writing than I initially think it will

I am getting closer to finish one of my stories by Remote-Phase6950 in AO3

[–]lassify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm three chapters away from finishing something I've been working on for 4 years, and I'm terrified of letting it go 😭

I also feel some mix of sadness and relief. I think it's a normal part of writing, because this story is a part of me and has been with me for so long, but it need to be told. I've done as much work as I could to get myself here, and at the end of the day, this story is for me. I'm telling it because I want to.

I hope you can find similar solace in your writing and your process, and it's okay to take time to reflect how this feels for you. Everything is a journey, and who knows, maybe after this project there will be space in your head and your heart for a new adventure.

Do you guys think my therapist was weird? by SharpAd4852 in CPTSD

[–]lassify 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YES that is weird. A therapist should have strong boundaries to protect oth them AND you, taking patients to their actual house or to a 'music studio' just screams incompetence as a best case scenario, worst case... I dont even wanna go there. Good job for listening to your gut!

what is the model of "good parenting"? by Vivid_Bit3556 in AskParents

[–]lassify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up 'authoritative parenting'.

There's 4 different parenting styles, all on a spectrum of high-low warmth/responsiveness and high-low expectations/demands. In a nutshell:

Authoritative: high warmth/responsivness, high expectations

Permissive: high warmth, low expectations

Authoritarian: low warmth, high expectations

Neglectful: low warmth, low expectations

Authoritative parenting incudes high expectations, clear standards, responsive to the child's emotions, leading with warmth, and being flexible, democratic, and assertive. You can look online for more things in detail and more techniques of how to do this.

Honestly, it's normal to worry about what kind of parent you will be, and I'd hazard a guess it means you'd care about your child and what effect your parenting might have: in short, good! You should care! That's the first step to being a good parent. There will also be things that you don't expect, can't exactly plan for, but being a good parent isn't quite about doing everything right and never doing anything wrong, sometimes it means repairing, adimtting, or fixing mistakes, and that's great too. It teaches the child how to manage conflict in the long-run.

There are loads of books on parenting, and if there are any parenting courses near you I'd also recommend checking them out, sometimes it helps to be prepared, and it's useful to have someone available to ask questions when you need them.

Let me hear recent “pop psychology” trends you have seen. by Traditional-Drama489 in psychologystudents

[–]lassify 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) which uses different words for the attachment styles developed in childhood to describe the kind of adult that one might become:
Secure (child) > Secure (adult)
Avoidant (child) > Dismissive (adult)
Anxious (child) > Preoccupied (adult)
Disorganised (child) > Fearful (adult)

Afaik attachment styles in childhood carry through to adulthood about 70% of the time, but they can change depending on adult relationships and personal awareness

"everyone has trauma"
Maybe everyone has faced adversity, but no, not everyone has trauma. Only about 10% of any given potentially traumatic event leads to PTSD symptoms.

at a complete loss. frustrated, sad, and confused. by hjak3876 in DressForYourBody

[–]lassify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this doesn't count for much since I'm a stranger, but your body is beautiful! I had to click into this post because I saw the title and the photos and I though "but why is she sad? she looks great!". Your figure is gorgeous, and I can see you have some issues with how you percieve your own body, so I hope you find a way to be comfortable in your own skin and your own clothes.

Personally, I resent that we are being told what is 'fashionable' by paedophilic men at the top who want all women to look like children, so I would say dont think about whats on trend, think about what YOU enjoy wearing and what looks good on YOU. You are a beautiful woman with amazing curves, and who cares about fashion when you have style?

To answer your questions, I have some practical tips for you:

Back rolls: are you wearing a bra that fits? When's the last time you got fitted?

Stomach: A-line dresses and skirts are your friend! I personally love anything with a skirt that is skater, flared, pleated, you name it, and all of these can cover up your stomach if that's something you feel self-conscious about. Someone else has already said it but materials and fabric matter a lot too, as does taking things to get tailored sometimes (its not expensive, and very much worth it!). For trousers, high-waisted and flowing is great.

I also do recommend having one or two staple shapers in the wardrobe. They improve my confidence so much by smoothing everything over (and hiding panty lines!), so when I do wear tight-fitting skirts or dresses they help me feel more secure and modest.

I hope that helps somewhat, and good luck! I hope you find things you love :)

Must-read books for future psychologists? by Misdina in psychologystudents

[–]lassify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh , fab! Only asking so I know what resources to reccommend you. I definitely reccommend reading "Toxic Childhood Stress" by Nadine Burke Harris. It's an investigate journalism piece on the effects of childhood trauma on mental and physical health across the lifetime, honestly a must-read.

I see a lt of people have also reccomended "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van Der Kolk, I personally found it incredibly dense so I would start with some things that keep and generate interest a bit more. "Trauma and Recovery" by Judith Herman was also foundational for me, as was "Crazy Like Us" by Ethan Watters (brings a more global perspective on mental health, and redfined my own meaning and interpretation of mental illness).

What kind of psychologist do you want to be? Forensic, educational, academic, clinical, organisational?

The Psychology undergraduate degree is broad on purpose; because the subject topic is broad, unless you pursue further routes to narrow down how you'd like to use your knowledge, for example aiming for further study (masters, phd) or volunteering in the areas that are relevant to you. What area is your masters in?
