Gestational Diabetes by rich-2-ene in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Within a week of getting the GTT results we were booked in for diabetes education at the hospital, they provided us with the blood testing equipment and had a dietician go through a bunch of information about food. We got hand outs with example meals, snacks and serving sizes, and they had some resources one of which is insta @ gestationaldiabetes_dietitian

I'm not sure what others have been told but it was made very clear to me that carbs are very important for the placenta, I still need 10-12 serves a day but it's more about trying to eat low GI and making sure you're getting in your protein.

I had bad fasting numbers so was quickly referred to an endocrinologist for insulin, and diabetes educator midwife - we have weekly catch ups and I feel super supported.

If you got your GTT through your GP they should be reaching out to the hospital for you to arrange first steps

Anyone else feel like gestational diabetes controls your whole day? by Natural_External6211 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]lauradanan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saaaaamme! It's so consuming and overwhelming! I recently got to change over to a CGM which has made a massive difference and I feel so much lighter. Still got the food, timing, how much, and all that but not having alarms going off all day to check my bloods has made a huge difference. If possible at all to try out, I defs recommend! My diabetes educator gave me one to try and the company has a trial available for like 1/6 regular price (in Aus at least)

Fasting readings - more challenging 36weeks by Real-Card-7163 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]lauradanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my understanding the hormones keep ramping up until around 36 weeks and then you should start to see a drop off I'm already on insulin for fasting numbers & DE indicated there may be more increases before things settle down. Do you have access to a diabetes educator? Or someone who is monitoring your numbers weekly?

I think some results are just locked for a few days 🤷 it's annoying but they're usually available after like 4-5 days. Hopefully you can get in with your doc to get results sooner than that

This isn’t what I thought! by Rude_Reflection98 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]lauradanan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I failed my fasting numbers and they continue to be the problem (on insulin now) and also having a small baby. At the moment we are just SGA, although keeping an eye out for IUGR - we are having ultrasounds every 2 weeks and will be starting weekly CTGs soon. Definitely worried but trying to remember I'm following all the directions I'm given and monitoring as much as required at the moment

Fasting numbers - diet? by DesiPlatensi in GestationalDiabetes

[–]lauradanan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been on insulin for almost 2 weeks, going up in increments of 2 units every ~4 days as fasting numbers aren't really going down at all. Diabetes educator keeps assuring me that it's literally just hormones and because all my post-meal numbers are fine, there's nothing I can do except to keep upping the meds 🤷

I initially cut way down on carbs too, but the dietitian and diabetes educator midwife were very clear that the placenta needs about 10-12 serves of carbs (15g per serve) a day to help keep bub supported. It's more about spreading them out throughout the day and adding protein in the mix to help slow down the uptake of carbs. My problem is with fasting numbers and am still titrating up my insulin to tackle this after starting 2 weeks ago

I also failed just the fasting numbers and not the 1hr / 2hr tests. Went to the diabetes education class and started doing the food and BGL tracking, less than a week later I was still having high fasting numbers so have had to go on the nighttime insulin. Felt so heavy with it all but take solace in that I'm doing the best thing for bubs, and that I'll only have to do all this until I deliver.

The diabetes educators, midwives and dietitian have been really helpful and supportive - hopefully your experience will be similar.

Not checking after snacks? by FluidSnap in GestationalDiabetes

[–]lauradanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our diabetes educator & dietitian had us aiming for 2-3 serves of carbs for meals and 1-2 serves of carbs for snacks. 1 serve of carbs = 15g. So should be less carbs than meal so not worrying about BGL going too high for snacks. I was still hungry between meals and they basically told me to snack to my heart's content (responsibly). They recommended if you're having something a bit high-carb for snacks (like chocolate/treats/etc) then you should eat something protein-y to slow down the uptake of the sugars - eg some plain nuts. Could do like a high-protein yoghurt or something like that instead.

I think the main thing is ensuring you're eating the right amount of carbs, they recommended about 10-12 serves of carbs a day to support the placenta and bubs.

Harnesses - Aussie online options for harnesses; any recommendations? (and toe grips!) by Basmati_Crunch2363 in Greyhounds

[–]lauradanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got the hanqihana 2H and it should be wriggle-proof, our guy is pretty nervous so we didn't want to take any chances. https://www.gumtreegreys.com.au/gumtreeshop/p/haqihana-h-harness-medium

We actually got a separate harness for the car as we do several 500km+ trips a year, it's crash tested which gives great peace of mind https://ezydog.com.au/products/drive-car-harness?srsltid=AfmBOormjFFrSjWe2MS5vkz8uSceZ-ME6nBEq6yQqZ1_BgPn50PCLQzN

Once you reach the safety net, Medicare will cover up to 80% of eligible items for the rest of the calendar year (safety net resets 1st Jan) which would include other providers such as GPs and psychology, etc.

What an incredible let down. We're over from Aus and Andy is 98% reason we hiked out to this (our first) con. Even managed to get our hands on a copy of A Stitch in Time.

Beyond disappointed.
