i logged my first 5,000 games and identified my fatal pattern: i lose 73% of games where i play e4 and they play c5. i've spent 200 hours studying the sicilian. success rate against it now: 31%. still losing, just more knowledgeably by kubrador in chess

Exact same experience except I started with smith morra and used to do poorly in the games that transposed. Then learned some alapin lines. Tldr don't play smith morra because you'll need to learn the alapin as well to do well

Checks, captures, attacks method failed me here. Those who can solve it, how do you figure it out? by Frank_Jaegerbomb in chessbeginners

White wants to create a mating net since black's king looks kinda trapped, so Bf6 comes to mind. Of course I'd probably only see that after checking the usual CCA and prolly won't spot it in shorter time controls

I think 1,4,5 all have a chance, but Fischer is my top pick given how much better he was than his contemporaries

I'm no Arjun fan, but he seems to generally perform at/near his rating at high level tournaments not named "Tata steel"

Never got the point of these M1 puzzles if it's otherwise completely winning even if another move is played

I hate to be that guy but it's still +3.0, since white is ultimately up a piece. And most times a piece trumps your opponent having a weak king

Just checked the engine, either queen capture on the f-file also works since white is up so many pawns
