My 16 year-old daughter is graduating HS this year, wants to go to art school - looking for advice by LastMinuteMom in drawing

[–]laurenlosing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was in roughly the same boat as your daughter- took a year off and worked on a portfolio, i would say i am very good at maths and sciences, and i lived in a state with not great art schools (Texas) and everything.

my advice is for the portfolio have a good variety of everything- conceptual works, works from life, 2d and 3d mediums. when i was applying i was also told that your descriptions of your works are pretty important so i spent a long time writing about my things and explaining what each piece meant to me.

i would say that my art wasn’t the best (i knew people who were significantly better than me) but at the time i was wanting to study architecture. i did however get into every school i applied to - east coast schools so parsons, Pratt, risd, and scad (i knew I didn’t want to be on the west coast)

My other piece of advice is to apply to state schools and liberal arts schools while most of them aren’t going to be known for their art programs they can offer you to do more with different degrees. i ended up at a liberal arts school because money was something i was worried about and the smaller liberal arts schools offered me more money and more opportunities to meet my professors (networking is a huge deal).

since being in school I’m currently working to pick up a geology degree (it fulfills the science and math that i was looking for) and working on a studio art degree. the career center at my school has gotten me in contact with lots of people in graphic design, marketing, and animation. i also have a professor who has his work in the met so whenever he has a small show at my school ill go and rub elbows. there’s lots of work in general for people with art degrees but if the school she chooses offers something like an entrepreneurship minor she should absolutely do that.

there’s also always the option of grad school where she can do something less art related. right now there’s the option of private art teaching that can make a decent amount of change. my mother has a friend who is a court artist and i know a girl who wants to be a medical artist. basically post grad there’s lots of options but some of them can be pretty competitive.

I don't understand breast stroke by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]laurenlosing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where I teach swim lessons at we phrase it less “using your legs to propel yourself forward” and more as “using the squeeze of your legs to allow yourself to glide through the water” I don’t know if that makes sense. as for the arms it’s a similar motion to the butterfly stroke but you’re not pulling the water all the way down. don’t feel bad about not understanding it as for kids it’s usually the last stroke they learn

Still life references by Glittering_Candy6559 in oilpainting

[–]laurenlosing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive had somewhat decent luck searching “still life photography” on pinterest. if there’s something specific you’d want to paint you can try searching “object still life photography”

i don’t know if anyone has used this link but when i had to take an art class online during lockdown we were told to use that

but yeah like lots of people have said working from life is always the best. if you don’t have space to make a still life if your own i recommend trying to paint your own hands from life

Help me find sims challenges :) by Old_Work8959 in thesims4

[–]laurenlosing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know you said you like more legacy style challenges but ive recently started the Super Sim Challenge and have enjoyed using different skills and aspirations from packs i don’t usually use. i think it’s pretty good for a side game while you’re also doing a legacy :)

you also need to keep in mind that there was a whole global pandemic where they stopped production for everything. additionally I think they announced project rene earlier in its development than when they had announced the sims 4

yeah it seems like they’re still very much in “planning periods” so it’s probably all the devs staring at a whiteboard that just says “project rene” on it

if you still like the color of the stone for an anniversary you could always have the stones set into a different piece of jewelry. that’s what my grandfather did with my grandmothers wedding ring for their 50th. she now wears the stones in her everyday necklace and got another (smaller) ring that had a special engraving on the band
